Rumpelstiltskin was waiting for Belle to come back after he had kicked her out. Remember that scene where the Evil Queen just strides right in and makes a comment about ‘flimsy locks’ ? If he didn’t want to be disturbed by anyone, he would have locked down his entire castle. But he didn’t. Why?

I saw this post on tumblr about why he didn’t:

“Flimsy locks” & “I’m not dealing today”

I just realized that I had missed something epic and painful and punch-in-the-face obvious. The first thing Rumpel says in this scene is that he’s not dealing today. He’s left his security down, and his locks undone, which is the only reason Regina got in, because he’s living in hope that Belle would come back.

And look at that tea set. He’s got it set out for two. He makes it clear that he’s not expecting anyone to call and that no visitors were expected, but he still set out the tea set for two. He’s still waiting for her to come back, even though this is weeks/months later. He’s waiting, and Regina sees this, which is why she’s even crueler to him. And the fact she touches the set, interferes with something that is meant for Belle? That is why Rumpel keeps his back to her.

And what’s one of the first things that Rumpel does for Belle in Storybrooke? Is take that very tea set that he has had waiting for her, to make her a cup of tea in his shop.

    What do you all think?

Wow ok it’s not like I needed my heart or anything.

I think this seems plausible and VERY painful.

This is probably the most heartbreaking, and yet, deliciously romantic theory I have ever read in my life. 😥

Oh God. Why did I read that theory? That is so sad. 😥

    …but really REALLY romantic. 😀

another thing, I think it was in the episode “the shepherd” (could be wrong) where you see Rumplestilskin drinking from a flask (something tells me it wasn’t pumpkin juice) and acting kinda weird (even by rumplestilskin standards) I always thought this was not long after Belle left and was still kinda bummed out about it.

Drinking to help with the pain – Belle tried doing that too, in ‘Dreamy’.

[Also nice Harry Potter reference ;)]

    *nods*

He’s also drinking, if I remember correctly in “The Price of Magic”. There are a few episodes that happened in the timeline after Belle left him and before the curse hit where he has the flask. I just mentioned it in another post that after Belle left, he put his curse plans into hyper-speed after hundreds of years of living and had a tendency to drink from the flask. He had nothing else to live for. Belle was gone forever, Bae was missing. He had nothing to lose. Poor Rumple.

Keeper of Rumplestiltskin's and Neal's spears and war paint and crystal ball.

I think the tea set for two also shows that Rumple misses Belle so much that he still sees her from time to time but realizes it was only his own memories. Which ties in when he is reunited with Belle and he has to grasp her shoulder to determine whether she is real or not. All that time and only having his memories to live on.

I think that he must be so shocked to see her after he’s believed her to be dead for so long.
