Things I want to know about Rum’s parents ( After reading that spoiler tweet about Rum’s father ):
1) Why was Rum’s father a ”coward” ( could Rum be the son of the Cowardly Lion from Oz )
2) Who is Rum’s father? ( Could he be the Cowardly Lion from Oz )
3) Who is Rum’s mother ( Could his mother be Dorothy, Wicked Witch, or even Glinda)
4) Who were the ”spinsters” that raised Rumpel when he was a child?
5) Why did his parents name him Rumpelstiltskin?
6th Question: Did Rum’s mother die or did she leave her son like Milah left Baelfire?

Some fans do compare Rumpel to being the cowardly lion; but what if his father was the real Cowardly Lion from Oz.

¿Could they be the 3 spinsters? From the Grimm fairytale??? In the original fairytale they help a girl, who was ordered by the queen to spin a room full of flax, once they help her she is to call them “cousins” and invite them to her wedding to the prince, (it has many similarities to the millers daughter tale in my opinion) maybe in Once they are the ones that take care of Rumple as a kid, and teach him how to spin at the wheel.

I mentioned causually that it would be interesting to introduce the three fates, or as they are known in the Odyssey, the three spinsters to the story. The are very much like Rumpel, deciding the fates of men.
So these would be a perfect fitThe Fates have the subtle but awesome power of deciding a man’s destiny. They assign a man to good or evil. Their most obvious choice is choosing how long a man lives. There are three Fates. Clotho, the spinner, who spins the thread of life. Lachesis, the measurer, who choses the lot in life one will have and measures off how long it is to be. Atropos, she who cannot be turned, who at death with her shears cuts the thread of life.
The Fates are old and predate the gods. It is not entirely clear how far their power extends. It is possible that they determine the fate of the gods as well. In any case, not even the most powerful is willing to triffle with them.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moirai
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OdysseySo this would make Odysseus Rumpel’s dad. He can be seen as a coward, his travels lead many of his crew to their deaths as he slipped out every time. He was cunning, like Rumpel, depending on his wit to get him out of sticky situations.
Now I don’t remember it all… I will have to brush up on Mythology, but so far it seems a perfect fit.
Edit:
Ok it could be Hector:The next day, the enraged Achilles renounces the wrath that kept him out of action and routs the Trojans back to the city. Hector chooses to remain outside the gates of Troy and face Achilles, partially because had he listened to Polydamas and retreated with his troops the previous night, Achilles would not have killed so many Trojans. However, when he sees Achilles he is seized by fear, and turns to flee, as Achilles gives chase to him three times around the city. Hector then masters his fear and turns to face Achilles. But Athena, in the disguise of Hector’s brother Deiphobus, deluded Hector. He requests from Achilles that the victor would return the other’s body after the duel, (though Hector himself made it clear he planned to throw Patroclus’ body to the dogs) but Achilles refuses. Achilles hurls his spear at Hector, who dodges it, but Athena brought it back to Achilles’ hands without Hector noticing. Hector then throws his spear at Achilles; it hits the shield but to no avail. When Hector turns to face his supposed brother to retrieve another spear he sees no one there. At that moment he realizes that he is doomed. Hector decides that he will go down fighting and that men will talk about his bravery in years to come; the desire to achieve ever-lasting honor was one of the most fierce for soldiers living in the timocratic (honor based) society of the age.
There is also mention of an infant son http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hector

For the reason they call him Rumplestiltskin. it could be that when he was little he was always trying to make noises with the chair or the wheel to get attention from the women and so they call him: Rumplestiltskin.
Original Rumpelstiltskin was a name for an evil leprechaun, like a poltergeist, makes noises by at stilts (presumably so are things such as table legs meant) shakes (“surprise”).
That would mean maybe his real name (was his mother or father has giving him at birth is not Rumplestiltskin at all. That would fit in the show as well, because they love to play with names. 😉
I mean how many names has David Nolan, Prince James, Prince Charming or since 2.13 David – my name, name 😆Heros don't get their Happy Ending!
February 14, 2013 at 2:03 pm #173262spinninggoldParticipantMaybe he was a rumpled lil baby with long slendery legs (stilts) when he was found by the spinsters. And -skin or more -sken can be a term of endearment (sorta), like wife-> wifey germanic dialects actually use the -ske.
Oh maybe the name in his pasport is his real name too!… Still that does not explain why the knife says Rumpelstiltskin. Although… maybe that is why the knife does not work here, Rumpel is not his name! So the thing would be utterly useless *Sticks tongue out at Hook*February 14, 2013 at 3:22 pm #173282tiara_roseParticipantMaybe the knife show the name you are and not with what you born with. I mean what would stand on the Knife by David. I think he is more Prince Charming then David. I mean maybe it is like the Axe, that change on the name you are (Happy – Grumpy and Anton – Tiny)

February 14, 2013 at 3:39 pm #173284spinninggoldParticipantSo getting further with my theory, that would make the Trojan wars the ogre wars, and we all know who lost there…. Certain Trojan horse was brought in and everything went a bit wrong. A lost little child could have been taken in by the pittying spinsters.
Seeing the fairies have a way of acting like a bunch of spoilt Greek Godesses… Have they started it by quibbling over an apple, who was supposed to be “for the fairest of them all”?
WOW… gone full circle there… how did that happen? 😆 Maybe I AM on to something here…. Ok where is that book Greek mythology 1.01 when I need it…

lol, I love your theory though about the Spinsters being the three Fates. They’ve already set brought in Greek mythology already with King Midas in the first season, and it fits with how Rumple learned to become a spinner since that’s usually associated with women.

Actually that is not true, but a myth that really took hold around Victorian times, when having a wife that stayed at home was the posh thing to have. With farmer’s wives and widows still needing to make money, the cottage industries started appearing, where the women took over the weaving, knitting, spinning, and so on, making the textile industry, women’s work.
Before that it was a job shared equally. Especially sailors knew what to do with a bit of yarn. They needed to make fishing nets, but also knitted those gorgeous cabled sweaters that we should put a few OuaT men in…. Oh if I could only be wardrobe mistress on the set of OuaT for a day *drool*February 15, 2013 at 5:37 pm #173532obisgirlParticipantthe term spinster also refers to an old maid, is an older, childless woman who has never been married.
