Rumple admitted to Belle (I think it was in “The Crocodile” – after he rescued her from the mine) that he still needed magic as a crutch. That without it, he was a coward.
Well, I think he was the ultimate coward in this latest episode, “In the name of the brother”.
His magic does not work, he cannot bring Belle’s memories back. So what does he do? He leaves town and runs away from that problem. The courageous thing to do would have been to stay and gently deal with Belle without trying to use magic. Get her to start knowing him again. Get her to understand that he loves her and cares for her. Ask for help, if needed – for example, from Ruby. But no, he takes the easy way out. He runs away. And threatens everyone. Like a coward would.

I think he realized that he couldn’t immediately fix what happened to Belle, but he still could leave town and find his son. The boundary curse was broken and if he did stay, I really think the only thing he could have done was finish Hook off.
But like Charming said: Murder isn’t a nice first impression.
Even if Belle didn’t remember him, she would be wary of a guy who kills another guy because of a centuries old vendetta.
January 26, 2013 at 1:08 am #170012PriceofMagicParticipantRumple wasn’t being a coward. His presence wasn’t helping Belle, she was terrified of him. He was desperate to get her to remember and he was only making the situation worse. Emotions were running high for him and her. The best thing for both of them was for him to leave her alone and that wouldn’t have been an easy decision to make. She is the woman he loves, she’s telling him to go away, he’s respecting her wishes. That doesn’t mean he’s given up on her, he’s just allowing time for everything to calm down before he tries again.
Finding Bae has always been his lifelong goal. Before Belle lost her memory she was encouraging him to go. If he can’t help Belle at this moment in time, he might as well find his son and give time for the dust to settle. Rumple fully intends to return to Belle hence his threat to the Charmings. Even Belle, in her right mind, would’ve agreed that he should find his son.

I do think he gave up a little to easily, in Rumpel opinon all he is good at is magic so once he had tried all the magical solution (true loves kiss, the the chipped cup) and relised that it wasn’t working he gave up and put all his anger into finding Bae, witch I think is the worst thing he could do at this point because Bae wanted to come to this world to stop Rumpel from hurting people and if Rumpel finds Bae while his throwing temper tantrums over Belle his not going to have much luck trying to convince him that his trying to change.Instead of trying to speed up the process by handing her a broken cup and telling her that he had enchanted it,witch was clearly scaring her, he should had sat down next to her and started up a conversation to let her know that she doesn’t need to be afraid of him.

The way he refused to heal Greg got to me–I was a bit more sorry for him in the scene because of how distraught he was about Belle, but to say that he didn’t owe any of them anything is a bit much. The Prince Charming and Emma had done nothing but help him–Prince Charming especially helped Rumpelstiltskin with saving Belle. But I did feel for him a bit in that scene, and in the scene where he tried to get Belle to remember.
Some people do say that he tried a bit too much to get her to remember (and I agree) but it was a bit understandable.
With Rumpelstiltskin leaving, it is realistic–he loves Belle, but Baelfire is his son, too. 🙂 He loves him and has been waiting for the moment for years, so it is understandable that he would look for him as soon as he could cross the border.
And I think him leaving Belle was also him trying to give her some space–she wasn’t reacting well to him. She is confused and troubled. She may need some time to herself. Once she calms down, she may be more open to spending more time with him.
The only part of the episode that made me hate him was the end, when he threatened to kill the whole Charming Family, especially the way he looked at Henry as he threatend him. Threatening to kill a boy or make him an orphan is horrible–the fear in Henry and the anger and helplessness with the others was what made me find less sympathy with Rumpelstiltskin.
January 26, 2013 at 2:13 am #170023timespacerParticipantI see a mixture of motives. Yes, part of it is Rumple’s cowardice, and part of it is a realization that he can’t really do much to help Belle right now anyway. But let’s not forget the important point that Cora gave him the orb to find Bae and he wants to leave immediately while the location information he got from it is still valid. Rumple is broken by his loss of Belle and Regina is broken after being framed. Now Cora has gotten Rumple to leave town and Regina is ready to listen to Cora’s advice. It looks like her plan is coming together…
January 26, 2013 at 3:01 am #170028theeviloneParticipantI wish it weren’t true but I do think he was being a bit of a coward. With everything that hapened to him he is in a fragile state. But when he saw Cora and then after the kiss, he looked horrified, I believe that he really truly wanted that magic globe but what I think sealed the deal was not having to deal with Cora herself I mean he didn’t waste anytime not even to let poor Emma sleep. He ran out of there.
January 26, 2013 at 6:55 am #170044swanhookParticipantRumple (in my opinion) will always be a coward. Unless he does something heroic, in my eyes he will always be one. It would take something pretty extraordinary to change my opinion.
However, before he got magic, I believe he was not a coward. He left the ogre war, not out of fear, but because he knew he was going to die and that would mean Bae wouldn’t have a father. And thats a pretty brave thing to do when knowing that you would be looked down upon by everyone.
But unfortunately his magic changed him, so he hides behind that.January 26, 2013 at 7:59 am #170045PheeParticipant@PriceofMagic wrote:

It’s that classic saying that if you love someone, you have to set them free, and if they come back, then it was meant to be. Much easier said than done. I’d say that realising that Belle needs space and giving it to her is the bravest thing he’s done in a good long while.

I reckon it’s completely understandable. The only way Rumple has solved problems in his life is by using magic, so it was totally in character for him to charm Chip and shove it in Belle’s face, begging her to let it work. He was desperate and didn’t know any other way to handle it. The last time he let go of someone, it was Bae, and he’s been alone and suffering for it ever since. So is it any wonder he couldn’t bring himself to let go of Belle here?
January 26, 2013 at 11:44 am #170055tiara_roseParticipantI think Rumple is not a coward for leaving the town. He can’t stay oteherwise he kill Hook and he want to be at least the man Belle wanted him to be. His staying would only hurt her, because he will not stop to heal her from the amnesia and would destroy something else on the way. His desperation is dangerous. He needs his son.
The threat altough was really something a real coward would do. He could have asked that the Charmings to protect Belle, but he was afraid that they would say no, like he did with the outsider. He don’t want to owe the something.
I really been interesting in the next few episode for the developing of Rumpelstiltskin. I mean not many fathers who abandoned there child would try to search them and ask for forgiveness. My own father didn’t. I think how he will handle this situation we will see how much coward he really is. I mean Bae ist the person he love most, will propably hate him like no one else. I want to see the reaction and then I can say he is really a coward until now.
