Tonight we saw that Baelfire darkened his heart and ordered his father to kill Beowulf (and then had plans to hurt the Baker’s Boy). Do you think this fits with Bae’s character as we’ve seen it through other flashbacks?
And now that Rumple has darkened (more darkened?) his soul for Gideon, can Rumple’s second son be saved from a dark fate? Will it take Rumple taking on still more darkness?

I am glad they had him drink the memory potion and that Rumple then took all the blame on himself to save his son from the darkness, I think this actually fits Rumple’s character. I think what the story was trying to say is that dark magic will corrupt almost anyone. Bae became corrupted when he summoned the dark one and felt the power to the dagger and that power is very hard to give up which is why Bae was becoming darker and darker until his dad gave him the memory potion. I think that Rumple will do whatever he has to do to prevent Gideon’s soul from darkening just like he did with Bae. This episode basically stated that Rumple sacrificed his relationship with his son to protect him from the darkness. I think Rumple is willing to make that same sacrifice to save Gideon and I liked that Belle understood that.

I don’t understand how a memory potion affects darkness in one’s soul. Like not remembering you’ve done something bad completely takes away the impulse to do bad things? It means your soul is turned bright white again? This seems pretty nonsensical to me. Why not just give all the villains memory potions then!

I think what they were trying to say is that Bae is not bad or a villain he was just temporarily influenced by the power of the dagger and when his father took that memory away it made Bae forget the feeling of power that the dagger had on him.

I don’t know…Rumple told Gideon that this incident (with Beowulf) had darkened Bae’s soul. And if a memory potion can really do that–make you forget the power of the dagger–then again, why hasn’t Belle drugged Rumple’s morning cup of coffee?

There was a basic goodness still underlying him even after he took on the dark curse and I can see him trying to abstain from magic to please Bae, but having Bae turn like that didn’t feel right to me. I could see Bae killing to save his father as a last resort, but not with using the dagger like that and I find it hard to believe that’s he’d suddenly fall in love with magic afterwards. The story was basically just trying to merge Baelfire and Gideon into the same character so they could parallel the stories even more than they already have.
Bae was a brave boy raised by a loving if weak father.
Gideon is a weak boy raised by an evil fairy. If Gideon is truly like anyone; he’s like his father, not his late brother.
March 19, 2017 at 9:33 pm #334596AKAParticipantThe incident may have darkened his soul, kind of like killing Cora darkened Snow’s soul. This didn’t change who Snow was she was still a good person. The difference between Rumple, Regina, Hook, and the rest of the villains is that they continued to do things to darken their souls knowing the consequences of their actions. They made a conscious decision to continue their evil ways. Bae on the other hand was not making a conscious decision to be evil he was being influenced by the dagger and once that influence was taken away he was back to being the really good person that we know he is.

Agree with this completely

Ha, remember Dark One Hook, though? Not a memory potion, but if a Dark One can prance around having litterally zero clue about his status, then anything is possible. I.e. there are precedents for this nonsense.
I think Rumple — especially “early DO Rumple” for lack of a better word, this is just a few years(?) after he became the Dark One — is within the realm of possibility. But not Bae. Especially not the specific instance of how he came to do this. He wasn’t threatened. No one was being threatened. This was in the context of Rumple suggesting they moved villages — are they seriously telling me that Bae couldn’t be bothered, when later he’d be willing to jump down a portal opened by a magic bean? This was such bad, retconny writing I can’t even. What they’re doing is twisting Bae to echo Gideon, but still Gideon is little more than a giant plot device, this is such a cruel disservice to Bae’s character.

But the test then is: have any other pure of heart characters who have come into contact with the dagger had the same overpowering feeling to do bad? Cause I don’t think so. Cora was already corrupted and heartless (literally).
