ETA: I don’t think Rumple has a death wish. He said in 4×12 he’d like to survive for his happy ending. So, hopefully, his happy ending doesn’t include his death — though I’m prepared that is the price he may have to pay to give Belle hers with Will.
I have a totally different read on that line
He doesn’t want fast food because he wants to get to his happy ending which is death but only AFTER he’s made sure that people in SB get their HEA. If he dies from Mr. Cluck’s fast food then he might get his HE but no one else would. He has miles to go before he sleeps, to get all poetic here.

I get the impression that he’s still self serving and wants to have his happy ending in the living sense. Of course Rumple could still sacrifice himself by the end of the Season, but I just don’t feel like that’s his current plan.

It could be an extra textual thing–the writers are pointing to the end of the season without the character in question knowing that is where it’s headed at the moment

Maybe? But since when does Rumple care about anyone else besides himself and a select few (i.e. Belle, Henry, and formerly, Bae)? Why would he want to make sure everyone else in SB gets their HEA before he gets his? Rumple couldn’t have cared less about whether even Emma survived potentially getting sucked into that hat, and she’s one of Henry’s mothers. Rumple didn’t give a second thought about the fate of SB when Ingrid’s Spell of Shattered Sight was upon the town. He didn’t care about the Charmings, Regina, Archie, the dwarves, or Granny; he just wanted an escape plan for himself, Belle and Henry.
So unless Rumple had an epiphany or a moment of reckoning while he was banished from SB (which, judging by his dialogue with Cruella and Ursula, he didn’t), I don’t see him suddenly wanting to give everyone else a HEA first, with the possible exception of Belle and maybe Henry. Rumple didn’t even “die” in S3a to save everyone from Peter Pan; he sacrificed himself to save his family, as Belle said to Bae.
So that has me asking another question. What does Rumple want now? In S4a, he wanted what all villains want–namely everything. He wanted both power and love. He tried to use the sorcerer’s hat to cleave himself from the dagger, and yet, he failed, according to him, not because of bad judgment and addiction to dark magic, but because the “odds are stacked against him” by the Author. So does Rumple still want the same thing now that he wanted in S4a–to cleave himself from the dagger but still keep its power? Is that still his idea of a happy ending?
It sounds like he is going to be motivated to get Belle back from Will Scarlet, but how could he do that while he’s still sneaking around, just as addicted to magic as ever? Does Rumple intend to “force” the author to give him a happy ending and thereby “make” Belle his again? That sounds as ill-fated as Regina “forcing” the author to rewrite her a happy ending by making it so that she and Robin Hood are together. But what if that backfires? Can the villains (or heroes for that matter) even “force” the Author to rewrite their stories? Is it all a matter of fate, or are these things dependent upon freely chosen decisions and consequences?
I’m inclined to think that the answer is what Glinda told Zelena in S3. “Everyone has the power to shape his or her own destiny–to choose whether to be good or to be evil.” (Paraphrase). I don’t think Rumple can “force” the Author to do anything, whoever she or he may be.

Well maybe it’s just Belle and Henry–but that latter means Regina and Emma because mothers.
ETA: I also just don’t trust the writers to write a compelling reason or story, especially if a lot of this is motivated by Bobby wanting out

I’m with Matt. I don’t think dying is what Rumple wants. I do think he wants to fight for Belle but Rumple, being Rumple, he’s going to scheme to get her back. But none of it will pan out at all.
I’m not going to speculate either if Bobby is unhappy with the show. I’ve always interpreted him as a very laid-back, honest person. Heck, he’s more open about Rumple’s motivation for doing what he does than Lana is (who has the strong tendency to gloss over stuff when it comes to Regina).

Isn’t Bobby also on record for saying he enjoys playing Rumple when he’s bad the most, and doesn’t think Rumple deserves his happy ending?

It’s true. RC doesn’t like this concept of Rumple as a romantic hero or as half of a whole of Rumbelle. He’s said before that he doesn’t think Rumple deserves a happy ending.
KSite TV Interviw: Robert Carlye Talks Once Upon a Time (August, 2013)
One thing is for certain, though — he doesn’t want to see Mr. Gold settling down. “I wouldn’t be happy to see him having babies with Belle. I think that would be death. I just don’t think that could happen. But I think he should end up on his own in some way. But it could be for the side of good. It could be, in the end,” he says. “Rumpbelle” fans shouldn’t fret, however… the two characters will be interacting in Season 3. “One thing I can tell you without giving away too much is that Rumpelstiltskin and Belle will meet in Season 3, and in Neverland, in fact. But, it may not be in the fashion that you think,” he reveals.
“I wouldn’t watch if Gold suddenly became nice,” Carlyle admits. “There’s no show. I think that’s what makes the character, certainly interesting for me to play, and I think it’s certainly interesting for the audience to watch, that he’s conflicted. Does he actually want to be a good man? Does he really want it? Someone said in the panel ‘Babies with Belle, is that what he wants to do?’ I don’t think so. I think if we did that, we went down that road, I think the character would vanish and maybe the show as well. I think they want to want to see Rumpelstiltskin doing bad things,” he speculates.
Once Upon a Time: Can Rumpelstiltskin Ever Truly Change? Robert Carlyle has his doubts about a happy ending for Mr. Gold. (October, 2014)
Question: He’s happy right now, so what’s behind this quest for the kind of power he’s seeking? Belle wouldn’t want that.
Carlyle: No, she’s wouldn’t. Belle and him are two entirely separate things. It’s wrong. You cannot combine these two characters together and think they’re the same thing. There’s loads of stuff out there talking about “Rumbelle.” It doesn’t exist. He is absolutely a character in his own right, as is she.
He definitely loves her. There’s no doubt about that and he wants to be with her. This other thing, [other] part of his life, is probably bigger. Because this has existed long before she came along and will probably exist long after she’s gone. This hat and this kind of quest for magic and power is so massive for him. This kind of addiction he has to it is huge. That’s what drives Rumplestiltskin more than love.
Question: Do you see him getting a happy ending?
Carlyle: I don’t know. I really don’t know. To be honest, it’s… I think if you start to think of the characters like that then you’re going to start to lose the essence of what they are. Ultimately, they’re not meant for that world. The other characters — Snow White, Charming or whoever it is — these are the happy ending people. So whether these other ones get to that place or not is up to the creators. For me, I just don’t think it would be honest to do that. I think life just ain’t like that. You know, there’s good people and bad people.

Yes!!! He did.
Question: So many of the Once Upon a Time characters have a history with your character – often, everything comes back to Rumple.
Carlyle: I know, it’s true. For me, it’s great, because it’s fantastic as an actor. A lot of the stuff that goes on, in the episodes, regardless of whether I’m there or not, has been driven by him at some point. All roads kind of lead to Rumple in the end.

March 10, 2015 at 2:49 pm #298125PriceofMagicParticipantI interpret that as Bobby saying that a happy ending shouldn’t just be handed to Rumple, he should earn it. He shouldn’t have a happy ending whilst he’s doing bad things. If he becomes a good person, then he should get one.
