He wrote Emma’s name down because he needed to remember it. Her name was the trigger that would make him regain his memories back. Remember, he begged Snow and Charming for Emma’s name in the pilot episode because he needed to hear it so that he would have a way to regain his memories when he arrived in Storybrooke.
This is my theory as well. 😉
I think he can predict a few things but he doesn’t know how they will play out.. If you look at the well scene he looked shocked that it was Emma & Snow and not Cora..He predicts things and then goes with his gut I guess..and he figured if neither himself nor Regina could defeat Cora then neither could they
Hmmm I just watched the episode on my dvr and I was just thinking I know the producers said that Rumple did not remember who he really was until he heard Emma’s name in Storybrooke but I now have two theories. First, just because they said it in an interview doesn’t mean they can’t change thier minds if it hasn’t been confirmed in the show. So either he wrote it as a spell so that he would remember it when he met her or he wrote in the squid ink so that he would remember despite the curse…which would mean that he would also have remembered all along….completely contradicting what the producers said but I am pretty sure it was during season 1 and I would not have a problem if they decided to change thier minds or that is just what they wanted everyone to believe at the time.
I do believe he woke up in the pilot, just look at the way he says the name Emma, it’s like it opened up his memory..
I always thought that it was more like Emma finally…now the games can finally begin and maybe i can go find my son soon…and that conversation he had with Regina about making deals in the pilot or ep. 2…it always made me think that he knew all along. I was kind of like what tf when i read that because then that scene made no sense to me, and still doesn’t…
He used the rest of the ink as his “in case” backup plan. He knew he’s gonna be transported to the land without magic so it’s no use to bring the ink along nor used it to be free- instead he he wrote down the name Emma as a way to remind him of his plan (and got through the day?) plus keep the ink in a less-noticeable form (on the paper instead of the jar).
Why did Rumple need Regina for the spells. He could do it all alone. He did all alone. Did he want her to stop him at the well? Rumple didn’t through her away and we know that he could do that.
Does he want to see that somebody can forgive her, when she do the right thing. Because when he see Bae he want hope that he can forgive him.
Or was the action his revenge?

yes Rumple could have stopped Regina at the well, but he didn’t, hmm.
Maybe he has further plans for Regina, because he let her save Emma and Snow from not making it through the well, but then later at the shop his words to her were like a slap on the face.
But often I think he says does harh words to hmself too.

This had some good questions about Rumple and what his plan really was.
