During today’s Comic-Con press room for Once Upon a Time, we chatted with stars Jennifer Morrison, Josh Dallas, Robert Carlyle and producers Eddie Kitsis and Adam Horrowitz about a connection between Frozen and Storybrooke, relationship troubles ahead, and some teasers about Elsa’s plan when she arrives in town.
A Surprising Connection. When asked whether the Frozen characters had any connections to the fairy tale characters we know, Dallas cryptically teased “maybe there’s an unlikely friendship that Charming had in his past that maybe literally changed the entire path of his life.”
The Charming Family. “[Snow and Charming] aren’t getting a lot of sleep” when Once Upon a Time returns, Dallas said. “They’re experts at changing diapers. So far this is their chance to be the parents they didn’t get to be with Emma so they’re going to do whatever they can to be the best parents they can be and protect that baby against whatever evils and villainy come knocking on the door to Storybrooke.”
Bringing Frozen to the Show. Kitsis hinted that, like everything they do with Once Upon a Time, we’ll learn some unexpected things about Frozen. “There may be some things with the parents we didn’t know about. We’re not going to be touching the movie, but [our version] will take place either before or after it.” As for Elsa’s first goal when she arrives in Storybrooke (after figuring out what a car is), Horrowitz says “I don’t think we want to spoil what he goal is right away, but what we can say is she is very directed when she hits [Storybrooke].” She’ll be having a very singular purpose. “And what happened to her to get her into that urn and what was going on in her life at that point is what’s going to be revealed and what’s going to be pushing the story forward. Hopefully you’ll find that there are some cool, surprising connections between Arendelle and our world.”
Belle and Rumple. “I think their relationship is going to be stretched this season, probably more than it has been before because of the lie that starts it off. It starts off with betrayal. Rumple is an addict, he’s been doing it for hundreds and hundreds of years. It’s very difficult to let that go. Doesn’t mean he didn’t mean the things he said to [Belle],” Carlyle said. “I think he loves her more than anything but it’s very difficult [for him].
Emma and Hook. While the pair seemed on terrific ground when season 3 ended, Morrison warned that Emma’s biggest challenge in ploughing forward with this relationship is “something that I can’t talk about. You’ll see that her fears, her resistance to [Hook] in certain ways are based around what I can’t talk about.” This challenge is something internal to Emma and will be revealed early on in the season.
Once Upon a Time will return for its fourth season on Sunday, September 28 at 8:00 p.m. ET/PT on ABC.

This weekend at San Diego Comic Con Hypable got a chance to sit down and talk briefly with the happy couples of Once Upon a Time, and they shared their thoughts about the upcoming season.
Robert Carlyle and Emilie de Ravin
It was lovely to see the couple known as Rumbelle together, and it’s easy to see that Emilie and Robert compliment each other just as well off screen.
When asked about their characters’ arc this past season, Robert was quick to admit that, “This season really stretched their relationship more than it ever had before.” We know that they definitely overcame their fair share of obstacles, what with Rumpelstiltskin running off to Neverland to sacrifice himself and Belle staying behind in Storybrooke trying to step into the leadership void maintained by Regina, Snow and Charming. They definitely went through the wringer.
We were anxious to know what will be happening to their characters this season on Once Upon a Time, especially since we know that Rumpelstiltskin and Elsa have at least some sort of history. Neither Emilie or Robert had yet to meet or work with any of the new actors, but they were most anxious to meet them and discover what these new characters mean for their plots. Robert then let slip that “I’m about to do my first scene with Elsa this Wed.” So we will DEFINITELY be getting some interaction between at least those two this fall.
Colin O’Donoghue and Jennifer Morrison
Our time was limited with Hook and Emma, but when we got a chance to ask them about their characters and what they think of adding Anna and Elsa to the show Jennifer answered, “Anna and Elsa have been a great addition. They just fit into the world so naturally, it feels like they’ve always been there. There are tons of parallels between what is going on in Storybrooke, and what’s been going on in Arendelle.”
It definitely sounds as if Emma and/or Hook will have some definite interaction with the Frozen girls, but to what extent we cannot be sure. They must have shot something in an imaginary cold environment too, because Colin commented that, “We’re shooting Frozen stuff in the middle of the summer when it’s really, really hot, and then we’re shooting scenes where we have to be outside all of the time in the middle of the pouring rain.”
Lastly, when asked about how Hook and Emma are dealing with their relationship, we got a definite affirmative that no one is pretending it didn’t happen. “They definitely have a thing, that they’re going to have to deal with, so yeah, I think there will be plenty of stuff.”
