Btw, Jane Espenson, one of the writers for the show tweeted this a few minutes ago:

Robert Carlyle is okay, but he really isn’t all that. He is a bit over the top at times and if anything i think that his character comes off as inconsistent. Though that may be the directing and not his fault.

Respectfully disagree, hjbau. I think the character of Rumplestiltskin is supposed to be over the top. The wild gestures, the cackling, the shrill voice all fits with the makeup so I’m guessing that is what the creators wanted. I can see where somebody might find it cartoony, but it works for me!!

THE WRITERS/ DIRECTORS want Rumple to be over the top because they need to offset the more sedate Mr Gold.

I honestly think Rumple/Gold is supposed to be all over the place/over the top/inconsistant/unpredictable in terms of what you see on screen because there is so much going on with the characters. That’s actually why I think Robert Carlyle is such a brilliant actor – he has to play so many different characters in the same show. I really like Lana too and definately think she deserved the nomination but just to use her as the example – she has to play two characters, the EQ and Regina who each have nuances of personalities within each of those characters to keep you wondering what is going with each of them (although I do think we are about to see a third version of her character BEFORE she was the EQ). But with Robert he has to play Rumple before the Dark one, early Dark One who was really kind of sinister, pscho Rumple, funny/playful Rumple, in love with Belle Rumple, and then there’s all the Mr. Gold variations as well that keep you guessing. I’m guessing there are more variations of Mr. Gold to come as well.

Not trying to take away from Lana’s nomination here – she’s definately well deserving! And if ever there was a show that should win an ensemble award, it’s this one!!

Well i just think that it seems inconsistent. I have no problem with the before he becomes the dark one Rumpel, the problem is the dark one Rumpel. I mean right after he become the dark one he was a psycho and then i think about the second episode when he was talking to the Queen in the dungeon cave and was acting all psycho. Then they will show scenes like him with Belle or even when he went to get Charming when Charming was still a shepherd to bring him to King George. Rumpel was just too calm in that scene. And with Belle he was still creepy, but he like supposedly came to care for her and that seems inconsistent with a somewhat immortal character with any sort of goal. I don’t think it is his fault completely. I think it is a writing problem mostly, but the character just seems all over the place at times. I know i don’t seem a mastermind in the Rumpel we see in the fairytale world. He is so erratic. The actor is fine, i just don’t like the character much because he is so erratic and i think he is overused.
