I saw this at IMDb, and I thought it was really interesting.

Someone actually had the patience to time how long the characters were onscreen for this season so far. The results are somewhat surprising but not really.
1) Snow – 94:05
2) Regina – 90:25
3) Charming – 84:55
4) Emma – 82:00
5) Rumple – 63:10
6) Hook – 59:50
7) Mulan – 49:55
8) Aurora – 47:15
9) Henry – 45:35
10) Ruby – 42:55
11) Cora – 27:55
12) Belle – 23:12
13) Whale – 16:50
14) Neal – 15:10
15) Jefferson – 14:40
16) Archie – 9:05
17) August – 5:00I’m only really surprised that Snow actually tops the list because I thought Regina would this season so far, but as someone pointed out at IMDb, I think our very own Schmacky1 that Regina feels like she’s had more time because we see her in flashbacks and in Storybrooke while for the most part we’ve only got to see Snow in present day FTL.
That is so sad about Emma having so little screen time though since I’m 100% positive that she had the most screen time at this point last season. Not that I want it to be the “Emma” show, but I do feel like last season, it felt like the main cast which I consider to be Emma, Snow, Charming, Regina, and Rumple, got about the same amount of time with Emma getting slightly more, which I think it should be that way always with her getting roughly the same or slightly more than the other four characters. (I would include Henry, but due to Jared Gilmore’s age, he’s not allowed to work the same number of hours as the adult actors.)
It’s also sad that, imo, that Belle who was made a regular has such little screen time in comparison to non regulars like Aurora and Mulan, and that even Ruby, another regular, is below those two and Hook. Not that I want them to get more screen time just solely for the sake of having more screen time, but I think this is just another symptom of how the three timelines thing didn’t really work, at least to me. When there were two story lines, while some characters still weren’t integrated that much like Archie last season, I felt that it was more interesting because there was more of a possibility for different pairings to show up and work together. Thus far, it’s been boring because we only see the same people interact in present day FTL, and we mostly see the same characters interact in Storybrooke.

I think that Robert Carlyle has to come from his home in Great Britain so they organize his scenes to maximize his visits. As for Belle she does not progress the main story; that said I do think they are going to have a lot of Belle / Gold time in the next episodes. I have heard that Robert is in Canada filming right now. Gold is figuring out how to cross and look for Bael.I think by the end of the season the minor stories will be solved / ended and we will be going to the BIG ENDING that leads into the new dilemma for the next season.

In the end our main crew (Snow, Charming, Emma, Regina and Rumple) are actually ahead of anyone by miles anyway. I still think they more or less get equal screen time, although I am really really surprised that Snow is first! I guess the episode “Lady of the lake” had much to do with it. And true that Regina is second but this mainly thanks to the two “The doctor” and “We are both” – other than that there were episodes where she wouldn’t appear at all or would have 2min appearance at the most.

I love that the 6 main characters have received so much screentime, but a lot of my favorite supporting characters have been pushed to the sidelines. I hate that Mulan and Aurora have received more screentime than Belle, Ruby, Jefferson and August. I feel like the writers have been trying so hard to push these new characters on the audience, but at the consequnce of ignoring characters that we already love.
January 5, 2013 at 9:56 pm #167075evilqueenParticipantThey obviously have a story in their minds to tell so I’ll just sit back and watch what they want to tell, hopefully soon everything will fall in the right place.
Also, as much as I like Ruby, Jefferson and August, I wouldn’t go as far as saying I love them – and that would be the same reaction to many of the other viewers so I’d say the writers just went for the logical choice and introduced the others on the expense of the lesser characters screen time – in the end they can’t keep the story within the same circle of people because that would be just boring. [just ask Captain Hook lovers if they would ever swap for more August/Jefferson’s screen time for never introducing Killian in the first place]. I believe it will all come to place, you just need to understand that the new characters need some story telling too!
January 5, 2013 at 10:29 pm #167079PriceofMagicParticipantIntroducing new characters is all well and good, but it should not be at the expense of pre-existing characters. Hook’s introduction has been very successful because during the majority of his early episodes, he shared scenes with pre-existing characters (Rumple, Cora, Emma) which allowed the audience to get to know him as a character in his own right. Mulan and Aurora’s introduction however, was less successful in my opinion, they felt forced on the audience. Their first few scenes were annoying because they were taking time away from pre-existing characters that the audience already know and love. In Broken, how many of us were more interested in what was happening in Storybrooke than in present day fairytale land with Aurora and Mulan?
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixJanuary 5, 2013 at 10:49 pm #167081evilqueenParticipantAs I said, I believe all of that has its purpose. Sometimes introducing character at the expense of pre-existing characters is a must and cannot be avoided for the sake of the story. Perhaps Aurora and Mulan have been forced into the show but not for the sake of the new characters being introduced but to slow down the action a little bit, to let the writers adjust the pace and create some suspension, sometimes it is necessary if you don’t want to blow up your story. I vote for giving the writers a credit, they have very successfully conducted and closed season one so let them continue. Of course we are all impatient and want to know everything but they have proved that they have a lot of things up their sleeves and a lot of extra stories to tell. The characters introduced now might stick for seasons to come so it could be important to show their stories now and somehow accommodate them in viewers’ hearts.
