A lot of people notice the major changes in the show, changes in the characters, changes in the themes, changes in quality. While it happens to a lot of shows, it seems like OUAT’s changes were extreme, it almost feels like watching a different show.

Do you think that perhaps season 1 had Ghost Writers?

    Nah.

This isn’t exactly uncommon with other tv shows (True Blood was the same. First two seasons we’re great but somewhere circa season 4 it went downhill but kept going).

I think very few shows manage to stay strong all the way through. I don’t think theyvhad ghost writers. I just think they have dropped the ball and are missing all the opportunities to pick it back up.

In short, no. While I agree that the show has shifted dramatically in theme and tone, it is still capable, at times, to invoke the same feelings and resemble the show of S1-3A.

There have been several writing staff changes over the years, but A and E as show runners dictate how the show is written and what messages are communicated. Since they are still around, the only thing that has changed are the messages they wish to communicate.

THIS.  I think this half season is a good example of some of the feels that I at least got in Season 1-3.  They are still capable of at least that, despite the shifts in some themes.
