For the past few years, OUAT has remained ABC’s highest rated non-Shondaland show, and ranks in the top 10 ABC scripted shows overall. Even Shonda’s shows have seen significant ratings drops
Yes, exactly. This is a big factor. If shows like Notorious, Conviction, Star Crossed, Time After Time, ect all bomb and get cancelled after a season then the network will see OUaT as a steady (if low) money maker. It might not make the same amount as big hitters or as much as it once did, but you can’t make any money on a show that’s been cancelled (apart from syndication, which one season only shows aren’t going to get)

Yep, and OUAT makes ABC money in other ways. Look at all the merchandise the show has received over the years. One interesting observation I’ve made is that OUAT is the only current ABC show that gets Blu-Ray releases. Agents of SHIELD did for its 1st 2 Seasons, but Season 3 hasn’t seen a release on either DVD or Blu-Ray. The other shows are DVD only. Their deal with Netflix to stream the previous Seasons is also probably almost as good as a cable syndication deal these days. Not to mention that Disney probably sees OUAT as a Disney marketing vehicle.

As a bit of an update to what we discussed up-thread, the ratings for ABC’s dramas are in after their premieres.
Tuesday’s AoS continues its downhill trend: 1.1 in demo/3.44 live eyeballs. I suspect this is its last season. It’ll be interesting to see if ABC will get rid of both of their Disney-universe tie in shows.
Grey’s continues to be one of ABC’s biggest success stories and will probably be on air until the end of time. (2.5 in demo)
New drama Notorious didn’t fair so well in its demo: 1.1/ 5.39 million eyeballs.
HTGAWM continues to slip but rose from its lead in of Notorious: 1.4 in demo/5.11 million eyeballs.
Wednesday comedy line up performed about as expected, but their success matters less for OUAT than dramas.
ABC must really be hoping and praying that they’ve got a huge hit in their new stuff.

Don’t forget about the other new drama that premiered on ABC this week, Designated Survivor, which airs in the 10pm slot on Wednesdays. Its premiere got a 2.2, which for ABC these days is pretty good. The real test will be how steady it will remain this Season.

Ah, knew I forgot something. That is a good start for an abc show in this day and age. Also, interested to see how Conviction does in a bit.

I’m also curious about the rest of the Tuesday lineup, which won’t air til October 11th, due to Dancing with the Stars’ temporary results show timeslot and the Vice Presidential Debate airing on October 4th.
September 26, 2016 at 11:05 am #327718RumplesGirlKeymasterNumbers are in for both the OUAT s6 special “Evil Reigns Once More” and episode 6×01 “The Savior”
“Evil Reigns Once More”
Demo: .6
Eyeballs: 2.83 million
“The Savior”
Demo: 1.2
Eyeballs: 3.89 million
This is the same as the S5 finale, for two straight years OUAT did not improve from finale to premiere.

The good news: we didn’t fall from our finale last year.
The bad news: we didn’t rise from our finale last year and a 1.2 is a low way to start off the season.
Seasons of TV fall as time goes on in the season; it’s just what happens. What matters more is how hard they fall before they find their floor. Usually what happens with OUAT is that we stay steady(ish) for the first 3 episodes before the real decline begins. I’d say we will hover around a 1.1-1.2 until episode 604 when we’ll see our first drop (1.0). From there, who knows. Episode 605 might actually gain some traction because it’s an Aladdin-heavy episode and he and Jasmine are beloved Disney characters

They can’t fix all of the problems of last season with one episode, hopefully if the quality of the episodes improves and we shift focus back to the core characters then the show ratings might improve.
