Yeah, but this show has never successfully transitioned in a new character. All the characters that came on later in the show are disliked and are not written for. I can’t imagine them being able to successfully integrate a likeable character at this point. Their characters have all become some unlikable.
Main characters, billed as starring, that were brought in after the Pilot have been August, Belle, Red, Neal, Will Scarlet, Robin, and Zelena. I would agree that Will and Robin especially weren’t written very well and perhaps only gained minimal fans, but August, Neal, Belle, Zelena and even Red have all had sizable fan bases. I think it’s at least possible to bring in a few new characters and write them well who could gain fans. The key will be for A and E not to bite off more than they can chew with too many new characters and plot lines per usual.
I am not talking about since the pilot. I just meant from Season 1. All the characters who were regulars were in Season 1 except for Zelena, Robin, Will, and Hook and none of them have successfully been integrated into the series. They are all either disliked greatly by the majority of the audience or considered boring and a general waste of time. They have never really been written for successfully.
I am not saying the writers might not try, but i think they are going to fail. I think the writers got help with the characters in Season 1, before the show started, and so those characters that were introduced back then have stronger core personalities and have better backstories. That gave them something to build on from then on and they have never successfully added a character since then.
There have been new regulars, and characters from Season 1 have become regulars and then not, but no new regulars have been successful, in my opinion. They are all decisive characters and generally boring and unlikable characters.

Channing Dungey, the current ABC President, even mentioned in an interview back in 2013 that she thought the introduction of Hook in Season 2 helped the show:
Some series will bring in new characters, or even more dramatically, hire new showrunners, in a bid to avoid the sophomore slump. Dungey says Once Upon a Time benefitted after Captain Hook was added as a character in Season 2. “You are hoping the promise of the show you saw in Season 1 will really blossom in Season 2,” she says. “It’s trial and error. Sometimes it takes several weeks for a character to grow into who they’re going to become. You can’t get too caught up in those immediate actions.”

Wow, well the president of ABC is incorrect. I think people were interested in Season 2 because they wanted to see what happened after the curse broke. See Emma interact with her parents once they had their memories and she believed. I think people wanted to see what happened with Regina now that everyone knew. I think people wanted to finally meet Henry’s father. I think people wanted to see Rumpel try to find his son. I think people wanted to see what happened to the characters they met in Season 1. I think that people were all on with Season 2 because they liked Season 1.
Season 2 had major problems, mostly to do with Regina, but Hook was barely a blip in that season. You can tell though that ABC still thinks that stuff even though they are incorrect. That is why they keep promoting things like the wedding. They think that is going to help the show when it is not. It is way too late for that.

Hook.
Oh! I put him in the list in my head and it didn’t make it to the keyboard! Thank you!

Without getting into shipping wars, I personally agree with you that Hook was not “successfully” integrated into the show. I wanted his storyline to go a different direction so that a different storyline could play out. But that’s just my personal opinion. I can’t deny that there is a HUGE fanbase for Hook. This forum and many others indicate that he isn’t disliked greatly by the majority of the fandom and many fans don’t see him as boring or a waste of time.

24 ONCE UPON A TIME ABC 2512 3698 1186 47% increase in viewersApril 28, 2017 at 5:00 pm #337392RumplesGirlKeymasterAnyone want to guess the ratings for episode 6×19? I think we’ll stay steady with last week at a .8
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"April 28, 2017 at 5:06 pm #337393RumplesGirlKeymasterAlso, checking in with other ABC shows from Thursday night:
–Grey’s did a 1.8/7.02 million eyeballs
–Scandal did a 1.4/5.19 million eyeballs
–The Catch did a .6/2.99 million eyeballs
Grey’s and Scandal have already been renewed. The Catch doesn’t seem like a lock at this point with those ratings.
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"May 1, 2017 at 11:15 am #337548RumplesGirlKeymasterRatings are in for episode 6×19 “The Black Fairy”
Demo: .9
Live Eyeballs: 3.03 million
That is another .1 rise in the demo.

With a 0.9 this week, I can actually see us getting a 1.1 or 1.2 again next week with the wedding and musical episode.

All of Sunday was up, so part of it could have just been the result of more people watching TV last night than the last few Sundays. Plus, it was the big Black Fairy backstory episode, and I’m sure enough were interested in learning what happened between her and baby Rumple in the past.
