Here we go again.
Season 7 is only a few weeks away and it means it’s also time to think about ratings for OUAT. Unlike in past years there are several new factors to be taken into consideration, such as the show now airing on a Friday night instead of Sunday and several cast exits. In order to get a S8, the show must maintain steady ratings that are acceptable for Friday night–a night that is usually allowed lower ratings than other nights exits.
We ended last season on a .9 and while we might stay steady for the first few episodes, I expect we’ll fall as time goes on (because that’s the nature of the beast) but the question is really “how far can ABC let it fall and be okay with it.”
Here are the premiere/finale ratings over the past 6 years.
Season One Premiere Ratings : 4.0 (“The Pilot”)
Season One Finale Ratings: 3.3 (“A Land Without Magic”)
Season Two Premiere Ratings: 3.9 (“Broken”)
Season Two Final Ratings: 2.3 (“…And Straight On ‘Till Morning”)
Season Three-A Premiere Ratings: 2.6 (“The Heart Of The Truest Believer”)
Season Three-A Finale Ratings: 1.9 (“Going Home”)
Season Three-B Premiere Ratings: 2.4 (“New York City Serenade”)
Season Three-B Finale Ratings : 2.3 (“Snow Drifts”/”There’s No Place Like Home”)
Season Four-A Premiere Ratings: 3.5 (“A Tale Of Two Sisters”)
Season Four-A Finale Ratings: 1.7 (“Heroes and Villains”)
Season Four-B Premiere Ratings: 2.2 (“Darkness On The Edge Of Town”)
Season Four-B Finale Ratings: 1.8 (“Operation Mongoose Part 1 and Part 2”)
Season Five-A Premiere Ratings: 1.8 (“The Dark Swan”)
Season Five-A Finale Ratings: 1.3 (“Swan Song”)
Season Five-B Premiere Ratings: 1.3 (“Souls of the Departed”)
Season Five-B Finale Ratings 1.2 (“Only You/ An Untold Story”)
Season 6-A Premiere Ratings: 1.3 (“The Savior”)
Season 6-A Finale Ratings: .9 (“Wish You Were Here”)
Season 6-B Premiere Ratings: .9 (“Tougher Than The Rest”)
Season 6-B Finale Ratings: .9 (“The Final Battle part 1 and 2”)

It got a 0.9 because it was heavily promoted as the series finale for our original cast. They maintained that balance of ratings because of the original cast all those years. No significant cast changes.
This is a whole new ball game with a lot of bad things mixed in which you have to take into account.
Friday night is something you must take in.
You also have to take in the amount of fans not watching S7. Yes the new cast will bring in some new fans but it won’t be enough to cover the amount of people not watching S7. I mean LBR Jennifer Morrison and Ginnifer Goodwin have more star power by themselves then all the new series regulars combined. And I’d say that pre S1 as well.
The very mixed bag reaction S7 has gotten in general. A 0.9 is a pipe dream IMO.
A more realistic rating I’d say is a 0.7, potentially 0.6. A new series low or a tie to a series low.
Even with all the promotion they’re doing, you just can’t save a show that was already dying and now with this controversial idea they have for S7 it just if anything speeds up that death.
So I say taking everything into account a 0.7.

It could be. It’s a Friday night so that’s gonna change things. But it’s also a new season and historically we stay steady; it’s being promoted as a fresh start, a reboot and I would never count out curiosity for people who at least want to see if they’ll like the new direction. I definitely agree it could fall to a .8 or even a .7. I don’t think .6 is going to happen; that might happen as we get closer to the finale of 7A.

I don’t think it’ll take that long to get to a 0.6 especially if fans exit out of S7 with JMO or Emilie’s episode.
My opinion is you’ll be looking at CW ratings by mid season finale aka 0.5 or 0.4 and God help them in 7B if they don’t promote it as the last season and bring back the original cast to end the show.
I say this on the record if Emma’s episode ends on a bad note, that will kill their show. It will tank the ratings completely.
September 26, 2017 at 12:11 pm #342121RumplesGirlKeymasterI think the half hour break down ratings for 701 might actually be the most interesting part of the ratings that week. If it drops a whole demo point from the first to the second, we’ll know how people are receiving the new season.

Lots of GA members are still unaware of all the cast changes.
I will also say OUAT does not have a good lead in whatsoever this year, it has the local news.

This. I think it’s possible some fans who gave up on the show a few seasons ago will at least tune in for the premiere out of curiosity. And then ep 2 is Captain Swan so that will get viewers. I think it’s possibly the first two EPA could even get a 1. something.

Now that is a pipedream. It’s not getting a 1.0. We’re long past those numbers for this show.

I agree…the season premiere will draw in those who are either curious about the new setup, those willing to at least give it a chance, and those who are riding this series out to the end. With all of that in consideration, I’d wager we’d get at least a 1.0 in the season premiere. However, by episode 2, I’d say we probably fall to either a 0.9 or 0.8, and then the steady decline begins.
