Maybe it’s because I spent 6 years as a die hard LOSTie but I do not find OUAT to be convoluted.
LOST changed the way I watch tv shows/movies.
I find myself looking at things in the background, foreshadowing, expressions on their faces, tone of voice, choice of words, etc.
I don’t even do it on purpose, it just happens naturally.
And, I agree, PriceofMagic, OUAT is easier to follow, however, I found LOST very enjoyable 🙂
Except if you just join it is kind of hard to understand especially since they don’t use their FL names in my opinion.
But that would be true of any show if ppl started watching mid season, wouldn’t it?
Except in most shows you aren’t in several places NL, FL, SB, Land without magic at the same time.
I think Gypsy’s point is that with shows like OUAT, anyone would be confused if they started midseason. OUAT isn’t like a cop procedural, like Law and Order or Bones, where every episode is a stand alone and doesn’t connect to the previous. With OUAT there is a huge mythology and each episode is connected to the season and story as a whole.
Even stand alone shows like CSI and SVU have a running backstories that sometimes span multiple seasons.
So while ppl could watch any given eps and get it, they would still be conused about some things that have to do with that backstory.
And, ppl who don’t watch from the beginning are the last ppl who shoul be labeling a show convoluted or confusing.
I wouldn’t start a book in the middle and then complain that it was convoluted. That would be my own fault.
I don’t find OuaT hard to follow at all, but maybe that’s because I’m very familiar with the fairytale stories it features. My parents watch the show too, and I’m having to constantly explain things to them…especially mom who didn’t watch the first season- she just had us fill her in. I keep telling her to go back and watch it, but she doesn’t want to. 🙄
One time I was saying something to her about Neal, and she said “Who’s Neal? Remember, I didn’t see the first season,” and I was like “Uhh…mom…Neal was introduced in the 2nd season….”
