Think we discussed it somewhere sometimes before, but I bring it up again: size of signatures, and particular the use of pictures. I know people want to express themselves and here we have not much to do that, no flashy clothes to show, so signatures are used. But it makes scrolling and reading in the forums a pain when the pictures used are regularly bigger than the text written. If there are signature pictures taking the space of 10 or even more lines while the text is just 3 lines, and that in many posts, than I stop reading. Please, if you want me to marvel at your creativity with pictures do that in a thread on it’s own or on some photo/graphic site and don’t force me to do it here, where I come to talk and discuss. I always prefer forums where pictures in signatures are not allowed at all, but if it has to be, I plead for a strict limit and small size. Thanks.

November 2, 2014 at 1:57 am #288477MyrilParticipantTo be a pain in the behind again: I have a problem with the increasing tumblrification, aka use of animated gifs in signatures and in postings of the forum. Okay, get it, some people need to express themselves in punchy and very visual ways, but it makes my eye twitch. Not to mention pictures eat up band with, and though with landline connection that is for most not that much of an issue anymore, it can be an issue using mobile connections. Unless a cleaned up mobile version is offered, blocking most of pictures and other shenanigans, be it as mobile version or as responsive webdesign (adapting to the device one uses).
Furthermore I think it’s important to make aware, that certain animated gifs (the flashy kind, fast moving patterns, lightning, high frequency flashing, blinking, oscillation) can actually cause seizures, photosensitive epilepsy is nothing to joke about – and not even all webdesigners and content managers are aware of that, sadly, let alone common folks. More information about photosensitivity and some examples of what can pose a trigger, what mostly not (warning: can trigger seizures). Haven’t seen as far as I remember any dangerous animated gifs on here, though a few might get close, but we should be more aware of the risks.
Frankly, I am using by now browser extensions to keep this forum bearable for me, but that means blocking all images at the moment as basic setting, only unblock in seldom case of photos directly concerning discussion, set photos, spoiler pictures. If everyone else is happy with things as they are, okay, than I am happy about my browser extensions.

You’re not alone. I agree that there’s way too much visual noise here. An occasional image is okay, but this forum overdoes it like cake with 3 inches of icing. Adblock helps a bit, but it’s an ongoing nuisance to configure, and it’s not available on Safari for iOS. A stripped-down mobile interface — with the option to disable inline and signature images — would be fantastic; I’d use it all the time.

THANK YOUDepends on which browser you are using.
For forums I mostly use google chrome. Two extension are quite useful
Wizmage Image Blocker – loads the images but puts and overlay over them, so you see where the position of the image is, but you don’t see the image itself. You can easily toggle between show/hide images and can do it just for the open tab, so very handy if you don’t need to worry about bandwith and just want to ignore images, but eventually once in a while want to take a look at image.
Block Image – blocks images and videos from loading, so besides that you don’t get to see imagse, unless you want to, it helps to save bandwith. At the moment I’m using Wizmage, works nice, takes a few milliseconds maybe longer to load. Good experience with the other too but only use it when going mobile.
These extension work as well in most other browser based on the chrome machine like Comodo Dragon.
Firefox:
Image show/hide – hides images on a website, one can toggle it via button to reload and show the images
Image Block – prevents images from loadingNot all satisified with the extension in FF, there a bit less friendly to use, but they work otherwise quite fine as well.
Don’t work with IOs or Mac OS though.
On mobile devices (tab, smartphones) it can get a bit more tricky, no easy on and off extension for mobile browsers, but there is in most browser the possibility to turn of image loading in general in the settings.
