I really hope that we see more of Sleeping Beauty in season 3 of Once Upon a Time. We, of course, did see her in season 2, but we didn’t see any of her backstory; we only know what she says happened between her and Maleficent, and I want to see what happened, especially since I am just now gathering that, as is the case with most of the stories that we are seeing on the TV series, the Sleeping Beauty story is different than the one with which most of us are familiar via the 1959 Disney film Sleeping Beauty. I say that because I have very recently rewatched the Disney film since I haven’t seen it in many, many years, and I have noticed differences between what we already know about the Once Upon a Time story and the Disney film story. In the Disney film, Maleficent’s intent is not to put Aurora to sleep; it is to kill her. Maleficent puts a curse on Aurora when Aurora is just a small baby that states that when Aurora turns sixteen, she will prick her finger on a spinning wheel and will die; one of the three fairies, however, proceeds to use her own magic to lessen the severity of the curse so that should Aurora, indeed, prick her finger on that day, she would not die but just sleep until true love’s kiss would awaken her. What we seem to have seen on Once Upon a Time, however, is that the curse that Maleficent put on Aurora and the curse that Regina put on Snow were essentially the same curse and that Maleficent’s intent was to put Aurora to sleep (which, of course, as we know, is not a pleasant sleep). I, therefore, reiterate that if we do see the backstory of Sleeping Beauty and Maleficent in season 3, which I sincerely hope that we do, it will probably be fairly different from the story that most of us know. Also, keep in mind that if you get your hands on a book of Grimm stories, you are not going to find the “Sleeping Beauty” story if you look for it under that title because “Little Briar Rose” is the Grimm title. When I first read the Grimm story, I figured that Disney changed her name, which is true; however, what I had not remembered until my most recent viewing of the Disney film is that in the Disney film, the three fairies disguise themselves as human women and hide Aurora, changing her name to Briar Rose. I love Kristin Bauer van Straten as Pam on True Blood, and I really want to see more of her on Once Upon a Time. What do you think? Will we get more of Aurora and Maleficent’s backstories, or are we done with them? If we do get them, do you think that we will see the three fairies? Is/are the Blue Fairy and/or Nova possibly one/some of them? Nova is clumsy, but the fairies in the Disney film aren’t really all that poised, either. 😆

There is a lot to do and Sleeping Beauty is really a background character. She may give her story in exposition without us really seeing it. They may have intended to do it at one point, but Sarah Bolger (who play Aurora) has a new show on ABC that is on the bench until after winter, so she can’t stick around for too long.

We’ll get some Aurora and Phillip, but there is so much else going on with the show that I can’t see them exploring it in detail this season.
It was published pre-Grimm by Charles Perrault, who is also the author who made Cinderella famous and even then wasn’t the original. The old versions are twisted and weird, filled with rape and murder. Much darker than they’ll ever go on Ouat. Here is a link to the Wiki entry that summaries the history: Sleeping Beauty
Keeper of Rumplestiltskin's and Neal's spears and war paint and crystal ball.

I actually knew that there was a version prior to the Grimm version, but I have only read the Grimm version, so I don’t know much about the earlier one.

Yes, it would be cool if we could get the story of Aurora’s mother, and I say that because really I just want to see some more Maleficent.
If they’re gonna show any of Aurora’s backstory, they’d likely have to do it in the first half of the season, because as RG said, Sarah’s gonna be working on another show in the near future. Flashbacks to Aurora’s mother’s story could be done at any time, because Sarah wouldn’t necessarily be needed if Aurora was younger during that time.
The trick would be tying those flashbacks to a parallel in present day though, to make them relevant enough to show. I’ve been wondering if Hook had met Maleficent in the past, and she’s the one who told him about Regina having Belle locked up. If so, they might be able to connect that all up somehow to create an opportunity to show us some Sleeping Beauty flashbacks. Perhaps.

She can stir up mayhem in Storybrooke while the gang are in Neverland, it will give Belle and the dwarves something heroic to do, and allow another stranger to enter Storybrooke just before it closes off. Probably one who had a romantic fling with a certain Queen, and just escaped to this world before the curse was even cast.

I love that idea! I just know that I would feel so cheated if by the end of the series, I was introduced to a big-name villainess like Maleficent, played by Kristin Bauer van Straten, no less, and only see her in her human form in two episodes, but I don’t know; maybe, they want to leave Maleficent alone now because of the Angelina Jolie film coming out next year. 😕
