I apologize if this has already been covered in totality. The more and more I see the smoke when spells are cast, the more I begin to believe the color depends on the intent of the spell in addition to the comings and goings of who is using it. Is there a method to these smoke colors?

We had a thread about this a few years ago:

    Have you noticed the SMOKE?

As i said, I just think it’s supposed to be an individual thing for each of them to have their own magical color. I don’t think it really means anything like in Harry Potter how each spell is different colored.

Emma’s magic has been shown to be either white or yellow (except when she was the dark one). Regina’s smoke magic is purple, but her actual magic energy is red. Cora’s smoke magic was purple, too. Zelena’s magic has been consistently green, both in smoke form and energy form. I think Rumple’s magic has been shown as mostly red, as has the magic of Peter Pan and Gideon, Rumple’s second son. Also, I think Hook had red smoke magic when he was a dark one.

The OUAT wiki has a very nice list of magic users and the color of their magic:

Still, white magic, no matter who is using it (Regina, Emma….) always seems to be, well, white.

Dark magic seems to be all kinds of colours.
