[adrotate group="5"]April 20, 2012 at 1:53 pm #142992SlurpeezParticipantMy initial thought after watching the third sneak peek is that the only deal Mr. Gold ever broke was the one he made to his son. The episode summary reveals that Rumpel made a deal for his son to find a way to safely rid him of his dark powers and to become the loving father he used to be. There is also the official photo of Rumpel shaking his son’s hand as if he’s making a deal. I wonder if the consequence of not fulfilling that deal is losing his son. We saw Rumpel and Bae at the mercy of a green vortex in another promo, which is probably a portal to another world (this theory seems to be confirmed by the author of the episode, Jane Espenson, in an interview posted in the spoiler section). We saw another occurrence of this in episode 4, when Cinders tried to get out of her deal with Rumpel by having him sign another contract with a quil that removed his powers. Rumpel said no one ever breaks a deal with him, and then Cinders lost Prince Thomas in FTL. We have, however, seen Thomas in SB, which makes me wonder how he got there….worm-hole….
My second thought is that the ball Mr. Gold is holding is perhaps a ball that used to belong to his son, Baelfire, in FTL. Perhaps Mr. Gold is going all sentimental on us, like he did over the chipped cup in episode 12. I also love the way that Mr. Gold has one up on Regina again. Major pay-back for what she did to him in episode 12. All signs point to the fact that Regina was behind the conspiracy over Kathryn’s abduction. No matter how she tries, he can also say the magic word: “please.”
One of the most ironic things about that scene is that Regina did exactly what she warned Emma not to do in episode 8. Regina said, “[Mr. Gold’s] a snake. You don’t want to get into bed with him.” Regina seriously should have known better than to trust him. She also should have been more discerning. After all, Mr. Gold did tell her in episode 8, “I like small weapons you see: the needle, the pen, the fine point of a deal. Subtlety, not your style, I know.” In both that instance and the one in sneak peek, all Regina could manage to retort is, “You’re a bastard.” You’d think she learn. I love how episode 19 ties echoes lots of scenes in episodes 8 and 12, since all three episodes are written by the same screenwriter, Jane Espenson.

April 20, 2012 at 2:29 pm #142995BelleOfTheBallParticipantThat paperweight almost looks like a donkey to me – which makes me think Pinocchio. When Pinocchio goes to Pleasure Island in the Disney version of the movie, he is transformed into a donkey. I am totally lost as to who August is… but this is my interpretation on the paper weight on his desk!
April 20, 2012 at 2:31 pm #142996SlurpeezParticipantA donkey? You may be right, and it would tie nicely into the Pinocchio theory. Yet, I’m also even more confused than before. The paperweight looks a little like a canine. Also, poor August seems to be in a lot of pain. It’s as if last episode’s “shin-splints” have morphed into total body hardening. Could August be transforming into wood right before our very eyes? Also he appears to be chatting with an unnamed stranger on the phone. Could the person on the other end of the phone be the author of the book? Whoever it is, that individual is also in on their plan. My guess is that the longer August remains in SB, the worse off he becomes, which is why their plan has to be accelerated.

And I loved the exchange between Mr. Gold and Regina. Guys, Mr. Gold is BOSS. :ugeek:
April 20, 2012 at 2:49 pm #143000SnickerdoodleParticipantO my goodness, after two nd a half weeks of searching for clues to this weeks episode — 4 sneak peeks and a Q&A w/ Espenson — I’m loving it!
Definitely a donkey on the paperweight — and I’m not thinking Eeyore 😉 I have not been the biggest fan of the Pinnochio theory but I find myself very happy just to think we might be done surmising. I’m liking the turning back into wood theory, but who in the world might he be talking to on the phone that would know the truth? Maybe Pinnochio and Bae are working together. Maybe they were transported to the same place. That might explain the intro of Pinnocchio in Ep 20 🙄
April 20, 2012 at 2:56 pm #143002midnight drearyParticipantThe writers cut a very important scene between Jefferson and August in episode 1×17, “”Hat Trick.” I think they did that for a reason. I think they’re working together and that’s who august was talking to on the phone. And if that’s the case, then maybe “The Return” pertains to Jefferson’s return, and not Kathryn’s. Maybe Jefferson returns from Wonderland or some other land.
I’ve been saying it sense February. Jefferson is going to turn out to be Rumpel’s son. Mark my words.

If he were Bae it might explain the necessity of his being to access other worlds in an effort to find a way to break the curse. Not sold on it, but something to think about. I would offer to “eat my hat” if you are right, but I don’t have one 😀
April 20, 2012 at 3:19 pm #143008SlurpeezParticipantIs the paperweight definitely a donkey? Perhaps it’s a boy turning into a donkey. Of, course, I don’t mind if its a human-donkey hybrid, like in the Pinocchio story.
