Rumple has always had to deal with his problems himself. Before he became the dark one, he was known as the village coward and probably had no friends to turn to. When he became the dark one, everyone was afraid of him so he was alone. Those that he did associate with such as Regina were not the type of people you’d want to see you in a vulnerable state. Rumple was, and to an extent still is, a very private person. He’s learning to open up to Belle but centuries of keeping emotions and feelings to himself from other people is a hard habit to break. Also, how many times has Rumple used someone’s feelings and emotions against them in order to manipulate them? The fact that Rumple openly admitted that he took Hook’s hand because Hook took his wife shows that he is opening up to Belle but admitting that he killed Milah isn’t something taht can just be dropped into general conversation.
Belle has never seen Rumple in a vulnerable state. She knows that the persona he puts on when making deals is just an act but she has never seen him at his lowest and Rumple doesn’t want her to see him like that. Before he became the dark one, Rumple saw himself as weak and powerless. Milah only reinforced that belief in him. Before he became the dark one, Rumple was at his most vulnerable and Milah told him that she never loved him. Rumple may think that asking for help is weak and may fear, however irrational, that Belle may reject him if she sees him as weak.
When Rumple is telling Belle about taking Hook’s hand, the way he says it is very unemotional. It’s more of a “He did this so I did that” rather than admitting how much losing Milah hurt him. Rumple doesn’t want Belle to see him vulnerable.
Hook also reminds Rumple of the time when he was powerless, when he couldn’t stand up to Hook.
Excellent points. He should tell Emma, but given his past, it’s not unsurprising that he doesn’t want Emma to know either especially since maybe he thinks that would make him look weak that he had to go to someone else for help, and a woman at that. (Not that he’s ever been shown to be misogynistic, but having Hook around is going to stir up even more feelings of self loathing on Rumple’s part.)
Well, when you think about it, neither Emma or Snow mentioned Hook to either Rumple or Regina. It was always Cora they were talking about.
This is another excellent point. Rumple may not have any clue that Cora came through with Hook too. For all he knows, Hook came from Neverland, and has never met Cora.

Also, I have a feeling that the FTL flashback with Belle and Mulan also involves Regina. There’s a clip in the Canadian promo in which Belle yells to Regina that she’ll “never stop fighting for him” and Mulan was just saying that all Belle needed to be a warrior was a reason to fight for. Perhaps the beast is conjured by Regina to capture Belle.

January 9, 2013 at 2:45 pm #167663elleParticipantWhile I do think he should tell Belle about Milah, I can see why he is hesitant to bring it up. He ripped the heart of the woman that was his wife and crushed it. That is not an easy confession to make.
I’m not really suprised that Rumpelstiltskin is not telling Emma about Captain Hook–he deals with things on his own. He has only ever really gone for help when he has been in real need of it. Also, if he did go to Emma, she would not approve of killing Captain Hook, which is what Rumpelstiltskin wants to do. She would work to capture him alive–to arrest him. He probably just wants Captain Hook dead and gone.
January 9, 2013 at 3:10 pm #167664evilqueenParticipantAgree with slurpeez on the Regina thing. Which makes me thing, where exactly on the timeline is Belle’s adventure?
I was convinced she was captured by Regina on her way home but obviously not.
Regina visited Rumple after that and lied to him with a story about Belle coming back home, realising Gaston was missing, her father turning away from her and putting her in a tower with the doctors to heal her, after which she throws herself of the tower.
The story actually sounded quite convincing and makes me think how much of it was actually true? As we know, Gaston did go missing so perhaps Bella went on to find him?
But it’s also likely that Maurice did turn away from her and locked her in a tower – we saw him in SB and he was pretty determined in deciding for his daughter’s life too.
Perhaps all of the Queen’s story was true – Belle did throw herself of the tower – but not to die but to escape. Then again, would she be happy to see her dad in SB after all he did to her in FTL? Not to mention that Maurice believed that even after the curse was broken, the Dark One still held her captive and seemed pretty surprised when she said it was her choice.
Or was it Regina’s fault all along? Maybe Belle wanted to go explore the world before returning home and Regina chased after her then?January 9, 2013 at 4:02 pm #167669marilouParticipantor after Rumple threw Belle out she saw it as the only chance she would have to see the world. knowing full well that if she was to go back to her father, she would have to go back to being a lady and get married. At some point during “Belle’s solo adventure” Regina found out who she was and decided to capture her.
January 9, 2013 at 4:48 pm #167674elleParticipantI don’t think that Maurice had locked Belle away simply from how she ran to him and hugged him. And he himself said that he thought she was still locked up by Rumpelstiltskin. If he had locked her up before, then Belle would not have been so warm or so eager to hug him.

and Price of Magic, I love that too. You voiced what I was thinking.
