If Neal is Bae, then not only would seeing a pic of Rumple in the box convince him that August had connections and knew the truth, but it’d probably also scare him into complying.

We saw the drawing when Rumple searched August’s room. We didn’t see what Neil saw in the box because it would have given away that Neil is Bae. Bae would be very familiar with this dagger since he and his father – Rumple – talked about it at length while looking at it in “The Return”. Seeing this drawing completely convinced Neil/Bae that he had to listen to August. Somehow this means August knew this would be the only way that Neil/Bae would believe. August probably got this drawing and the knowledge how to find Bae from the Blue Fairy, who I believe also created the fairy tail book for Henry.
Don't grow up. It's a trap.

Exactly. I just don’t buy the dagger drawing, because August knowing about the dagger isn’t that scary if Neal/Bae has every reason to believe that Papa is still in FTL. It’s a shock but not an immediate threat. Learning that his father is here and that a curse is involved poses a more immediate threat, so it just seems like a much better attention grabber. Especially with all the hinting that Bae won’t be happy to see Rumple.
January 19, 2013 at 5:45 pm #169102sacrlcParticipantWell, I believe the unveiling of the dagger drawing was not so much to let him know his dad is in SB, but to convince him to leave Emma. The post card that would tell him the curse was broked was promised so Neil/Bae would be able to come to Storybrooke to be with his true love, Emma. After all, the reason Neil/Bae turned Emma in and “abandoned” her was to allow her to proceed to be the “savior” and break the curse his father enacted, which he would agree would be a greater good. I don’t believe Neil/Bae is interested in finding his father, he just wants to be with Emma.
Don't grow up. It's a trap.

If Gold had proven to be an enemy, Neal would have legitimate reason to fear he could become a detriment to Emma. I haven’t seen yet how the dagger can immediately convey the message that Neal must let Emma go fulfill her destiny. They could still go the dagger route on the show, but I think the photo would be more unexpected and stronger at setting up Neal/Bae’s reaction. He can’t help because the Dark One is here, and Bae’s conflicted feelings could hurt Emma. That’s a reason to leave her, imo.

The really sad part is that that would mean that by leaving Emma he was trying to do the right thing–to be the hero in the situation even if that wasn’t his intent….and by doing so that makes Emma think he’s a far from being a hero as possible 😥

I wouldn’t downplay the importance of the dagger. It is after all, the very thing that corrupted Bae’s father. I’m sure it’s the thing that Bae hates most in the world. It is unique in appearance and has the name Rumplestiltskin written on it. It’s a powerful object.
Considering that Hook knew all about it when he attacked Belle in EQ’s jail cell, seems to be that Rumple’s secret isn’t as protected and secretive as he’d like it to be. Young Pino as a child certainly could have heard stories based on rumours. Jefferson may have figured it out while working with Rumple. Seems EQ knows about it and Blue certainly would.

based on this, i believe that august has made this mysterious wooden box, and i believe that he must have used the wood from the tree that he and emma came through to our world…. maybe this tree has some magic, and the box itself can show what the other believe…or wants to believe..
in short, august asked neal if he believed in magic, and said that after neal has seen what was in the box he would believe in him…. so august was very confident that no matter what neal will trust in him…. these words could led to the theory above, the box itself can show what a person wants to see or desire…. so neal in this case get surprise after seeing what was in the box and want to listen to the story august wanted to tell him… about the curse etc…
i dont think that august placed the pic of the dagger in the box, because i believe that he didnt know who neal was… but it can also be that august as emma “guardian” has tracked neal down and know neal’s real identity and placed what ever related to him in that box.. in this
i thought that august learned about the dagger from henry’s book after he took it and write his own story in there…. so his knowledge about the dagger came after he meet neal and not before…..

Agreed. A drawing of the dagger may convince him that August knew something, but a photo of Papa Dearest wearing a snappy suit as he strolls down the main street of SB with his cane, THAT is gonna put the fear of God into Nealfire and force him to listen. So when August tells him that Emma has a role in breaking Rumple’s curse, he’s gonna have no choice but to cooperate.

It was a whale. There’s a moment when August goes to see Marco in his workshop in SB when he sees it still sitting on his shelf.

I agree. I either posted something along those lines either here or in my little group. It makes perfect sense that a woodcarver would know how to carve a box out of a magical tree.
In regards to him showing a picture of Rumple, that may be closer to the truth than we realize. EvilQueen posted some key art showing Rumple sporting a shiny red cape holding a magnifying glass, similar to something Sherlock Holmes would wear and have. Perhaps this is the picture AWB showed Neal. Rumple is small, the cape is shiny and red and it’s a mystery thus the magnifying. In real life, Rumple would be all those things but large. It’s a long shot but you never know.
