honestly, when i think back… in fairytale land, pinocchio was very good to help his dad with all this wood-works…, i remember that he was making a wooden fish or something like that, while prince charming and snow had the meeting at the round table just before the curse came…
based on this, i believe that august has made this mysterious wooden box, and i believe that he must have used the wood from the tree that he and emma came through to our world…. maybe this tree has some magic, and the box itself can show what the other believe…or wants to believe..
in short, august asked neal if he believed in magic, and said that after neal has seen what was in the box he would believe in him…. so august was very confident that no matter what neal will trust in him…. these words could led to the theory above, the box itself can show what a person wants to see or desire…. so neal in this case get surprise after seeing what was in the box and want to listen to the story august wanted to tell him… about the curse etc…
i dont think that august placed the pic of the dagger in the box, because i believe that he didnt know who neal was… but it can also be that august as emma “guardian” has tracked neal down and know neal’s real identity and placed what ever related to him in that box.. in this
i thought that august learned about the dagger from henry’s book after he took it and write his own story in there…. so his knowledge about the dagger came after he meet neal and not before…..
I agree. I either posted something along those lines either here or in my little group. It makes perfect sense that a woodcarver would know how to carve a box out of a magical tree.
In regards to him showing a picture of Rumple, that may be closer to the truth than we realize. EvilQueen posted some key art showing Rumple sporting a shiny red cape holding a magnifying glass, similar to something Sherlock Holmes would wear and have. Perhaps this is the picture AWB showed Neal. Rumple is small, the cape is shiny and red and it’s a mystery thus the magnifying. In real life, Rumple would be all those things but large. It’s a long shot but you never know.

For Neal to believe so quickly, it suggests he is from FTL and August knew that – so showed him something that could only be known about by FTL natives. Easiest option? August figured out he was Baelfire (how, I have no idea) and showed him a picture of Rumplestiltskin’s dagger.
However, if Neal/Bae is a big fat red herring, then it must have been something so obviously magical that even a cynical street hoodlum from our world would go “magic is real. Woah!” And a big, fat, glowing, beating red heart would generally do that…. so how did August get one? I seem to remember reading some discussion about whether the way Regina looked at August when he was “fixing his bike” right outside her house when Henry was leaving for school…. maybe she caught a glimpse of him stealing one of her hearts???

I really focused on Neal’s face when August showed him whatever is in that box. He developed tears in his eyes for the rest of the scene. Michael Raymond James acted the crap out of that scene. I didn’t like him at all as an actor but after watching that and really focusing… his face showed a whole lot about what was in that box. Like it was personal.
Keeper Nealfire's/Bae's scarf, Henry and Neal's bribery ice cream sundae, Baelfire's sword, the coconut map, and more.

That could be but Gold didn’t have any memories so he couldn’t ever track Emma down unless he heard her name. But I still don’t know how it found them or knew the name Baelfire unless the Blue Fairy or someone else is involved. š

Yeah, I just rewatched Tallahasee as well and paid attention to Nealfire’s reaction to August’s box (now that we know what was in it – the note that says “I know you’re Baelfire”)
Also what he says to August at the end, when he’s giving the money – “when all this is over, when this madness has come to an end…” – interesting in light of what we saw in Selfless, Brave and True and Manhatten. Neal was torn between wanting to go and find Emma once she’d broken the curse, but terrified of meeting Papastiltskin again. What was the madness he was referring to – Storybrooke, a town of cursed fairytale characters stuck in our world, or the fact his father had done this to look for him?
April 15, 2013 at 1:33 pm #186257kfchimeraParticipantAugust: Thereās a curseā¦ And it needs to be broken. Emma, is the key. I was tasked with keeping her on track and you, my friend, just got caught in the crossfire. Now, Iām going to tell you a story. And, at the end of it, youāre going to have to make a decision. Will you do the right thing, or not? Soā¦ Are you ready?
It’s kind of unclear from that whether August knew the whole story about Neal. Why say Neal was caught in the crossfire, if Neal was the reason for the curse to be enacted in the first place?

I think it’s a simple case of only Rumple and the audience knowing the true story behind the curse. For everyone else, Regina created it and used it to damned their world; in that sense, Neal/Bae was indeed caught in the crossfire, for he would have nothing to do with it. We, of course, know otherwise. š

Yes, but Pinnochio knew Bae’s name, which is more than the rest of the FTL people would have known. So what I was wondering was whether he knew more than just a name and that Neal came from FTL, or did he have more context and background? If Pino had the context, then he wouldn’t have said “crossfire” would he? So then, it seems likely that whoever told Pino about Neal only told him the name and that Neal was from FTL. Why hold the rest back? Who was this mysterious source of information? As others have theorized, it could have been Jefferson who had knowledge but was trapped in his house. Then we start to wonder how August could have ever found out about him.
