You guys really have to read the comic book series Fables, which deals with this very idea in some very interesting ways. The connection between human fairy tale stories and real life fairy tale characters is one of the more fascinating things about the comic book series
From a conceptual level, Once Upon a Time is VERY similar to Fables. It has the same basic ideas as Fables, but takes the characters and stories in completely different directions. It’s one of the reasons I started watching OUAT, because it sounded so similar. Now I love them both!
