I’ve listened to Skin Deep podcast episode like 20 times now and watch the episode when I can and there’s something that’s been bugging me. It’s about the scene where Mr. Gold tortures Moe French. The dialogue is really powerful in that scene, coupled with the beautiful, sad music in the background but I just get this feeling that Moe didn’t know who Belle was? Does even he remember that he has a daughter?
The Curse takes away happy endings. Maurice’s “Happy Ending” so to speak, would be that he is reunited with his daughter. Then again, not everyone in FT world were separated in Storybrooke (Red was still with Granny except they weren’t close). Regina seems to be the only one who knows about Belle.
Is it possible Moe doesn’t remember Belle?

I agree with you that Moe didn’t seem to even acknowledge what Gold was talking about. I have heard the theory that Gold had a relationship (possibly romantic, possibly not) with Moe’s daughter. I don’t think that is the case. It would make no sense at all for Moe to not even respond to Gold’s references to this person. Granted he was tied up and being beaten so he might not have been tracking very well. But still, if Moe had a daughter, who was now either missing or that Moe knew was in the hospital, you would think he would at least respond to Gold bringing her up. Although you might have expected Moe to say “what are you talking about?” when Gold started prattling on about “you were her father.”
I think they intentionally left it vague by Moe just not even acknowledging it.

At one point Moe gets this completely perplexed expression on his face but I have no idea exactly WHY he looked totally puzzled. By the time Gold says “You were her father” he has been beating the crap out of him for awhile so I don’t know if it is realistic to expect Moe to respond one way or the other – whether he really does have a daughter or whether he had no idea what Gold is talking about. In the last episode Emma made the comment that there aren’t any other missing people in Storybrooke, so unless Regina is somehow forcing Moe to go along with whatever her plan is for Belle, it doesn’t sound like Moe had a daughter who suddenly disappeared and ended up in the looney bin because you would expect him to report her as missing. The only thing I have been able to come up with as far as Moe’s puzzled expression, is that just like Regina used Moe to take the cup, she also took Belle and is somehow threatening Moe with her and telling him he has to keep quiet or she will hurt her. Maybe that is how she got him to rob Gold’s house in the first place. Since Gold seems to still believe that Belle is dead she must have always been locked up in Storybrooke from the beginning. So maybe Moe’s puzzled expression is that he was shocked because it sounded to him like Gold knew about the situation with his daughter and it took him by surprise. If she has always been locked up, it would be surprising to Moe to hear Gold talking about his daughter if he believes that he and Regina are the only ones who know she even exists.
But it’s really hard to say – because the feeling I get is that the OUaT show Gods were taken totally by surprise with how popular the Skin Deep episode was and I feel like they have decided to add in more Belle in the finale and next season only because it was so popular.

Jefferson said he was limited to his house, but I guess what I am thinking is that those years of stasis, Regina, ruling as mayor, were kind of a limbo, or better yet kind of like the movie Groundhog’s Day. There was no escaping the limbo llife and unhappiness until Emma came, she has brought hope. SOooo..
I am of the opinion that Belle has been in that cell since the curse happened. Mr. Gold doesn’t know and her father doesn’t know.March 28, 2012 at 9:58 am #140136PheeParticipantMy impression of that scene was that poor Moe just thought Mr Gold was pissed about the robbery, so when he started ranting, Moe had no idea what he was on about or why he was being beaten. I don’t think he remembers ever having a daughter, though I guess if his Storybrooke memories at all mirror his Fairytale memories, he’d think he used to have a daughter who had gone missing and/or died.
For me, the most compelling thing about the scene is, “My fault, what are you talking about my fault? You shut her out. You had her love, and you shut her out. She’s gone, she’s gone forever, she’s not coming back, and it’s YOUR fault! Not mine! You are her father!” I know he’s all scary ragey in that moment, but I just wanna hug him, coz you know that those lines were directed at himself as much as they were at Moe. He ends by bringing up that he was her father because he was trying to transfer all the blame onto Moe, even though really, he still blames himself for Belle’s fate.

I’m starting to think that too.

You are not the only one who wanted to hug Mr. Gold in that scene. 😆 😆

*hugging rumple* >_<

If she had gone missing, it would’ve been reported. And if Moe knew about his daughter being locked away in the mental ward, he wouldn’t have looked so confused by Gold’s words about “shutting her out.”
Belle’s probably been locked down in that cell since day 1 of the curse, and any lingering FTL memories Moe would’ve had of her were probably wiped clean.
