A while back I had a thread for this, with songs that seem to speak of characters or story-lines from the show. But that thread was specific to one season, and there are other songs I have noticed and meant to post, but never did. Here is a thread for the few I still wish to share, but are not from any particular season.

Here is a song that I loved even before OUAT began airing. One particular line stood out and always made me smile:

You were born a fire sign,
I brought the water just in time.

A few years later I heard the song again, and realized how perfect the song was for OutlawQueen!

The band describes the song as telling the story of “A pilgrimage to a bar”, which seems appropriate for a fated meeting in a tavern!

The rest of the lyrics seem to tell a story of people who are meant to find each other, but almost missed their chance. And also of redemption:

    Leave those demons far behind

Here is the song, and the full lyrics:

    Santiago
    by “I Draw Slow”

    Santiago
    by “I Draw Slow”

Your lifeline’s a crooked line that I’ve been tracing all this time
And then you got careless baby, I thought I’d lost you for a while
Then yesterday we met at last, an empty sun was sinking fast
And a full moon rising, baby, but I won’t take that as a sign
Whatever we are it starts right now, even if it’s over by tomorrow
I don’t suppose we’ve come this far only to find that this is all the way

Santiago rose like heat on the horizon
The bars stayed open and the music played so loud
And you were hoping that we might last until the morning
Well I had no doubt about it
I never had a doubt about it
And there’s no doubt about it now

Your birthstone’s a brilliant blue, I don’t know what it’s worth to you
But I don’t need it baby, I’ve other ways to make you mine
When you were born, a fire sign, I brought the water just in time
Now we are unbelievers baby, leave those demons far behind
Whatever we are it starts right now, even if it’s over by tomorrow
I don’t suppose we’ve come this far only to find that this is all the way

Santiago rose like heat on the horizon
The bars stayed open and the music played so loud
And you were hoping that we might last until the morning
Well I had no doubt about it
You know I never had a doubt about it
And there’s no doubt about it now
There’s no doubt about it now

    Lyrics from the band’s website.

Here is another from the same band. Apocalypso, by “I Draw Slow”.

Now this one is clearly about Zades! I mean, the first line is:

We’re kissing at the gates of hell

    ????

But more than that, the song is about two people who figure they are already damned no matter what they do, so why not enjoy the ride? Or, they are going to go to hell anyway, so why not go together? It is too late to “learn” and become better people, so they choose to just … embrace who they are.

This verse in particular reminds me of Hades’ line about “it’s our decay”:

And even if it all goes up in flames
And nothing in the universe remains, darling
I’ll be better by your side, maybe

    And these verses:

Push is gonna come to shove
On this hunk a hunk o’ burning love
So we’re gonna do it on a count of three, honey
Cause if you’re gonna go to hell might as well be with me

So put your skinny little hands in mine
Let’s go swinging at the end of time
We’re just another boy and girl
Looking for a friend at the end of the world

Well, here is the song, and the full lyrics:

    Apocalypso
    by “I Draw Slow”

We’re kissing at the gates of hell
But we’re swinging like an old brass bell
We’re gonna be the last ones through, honey
And I couldn’t give a damn if I’m holding hands with you

Let’s go swimming when the oceans rise
    Singing as the ships capsize
Waving when the moon lets go
Cause we’re never gonna learn if we don’t already know

And even if it all goes up in flames
And nothing in the universe remains, darling
I’ll be better by your side, maybe

Push is gonna come to shove
On this hunk a hunk o’ burning love
So we’re gonna do it on a count of three, honey
Cause if you’re gonna go to hell might as well be with me

So put your skinny little hands in mine
Let’s go swinging at the end of time
We’re just another boy and girl
Looking for a friend at the end of the world

And even if it all goes up in flames
And nothing in the universe remains, darling,
I’ll be better by your side, maybe
See you on the other side of time, baby
There’s no need to say goodbye, surely,
I’ll see you on the other side of time, maybe

Here is one for Emma. It is not exactly clear at first, but there is a line in the middle that makes it unmistakable:

so rise swan, open your wings, put off your duckling guise
carry the maiden born to be queen over the rolling skies

Then this next verse becomes about how Emma came to Storybrook, to discover her true home and family:

shine bright starlight hold tight swift flight
    home to the new-made nest
worries and maybes will not delay thee
lovers and friends await thee —

And the recurring refrain in the chorus must tell of Emma’s role as savior, bringing back the happy endings. For where she has been, sorrow no longer visits:

and the lords of constant sorrow will not dare to look upon
the bonnie gardens of tomorrow that spring up where you have gone, amazon

So much to analyze here, so I will post the full song and lyrics, with further analysis after.

    amazon
By Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer

    ~

come home, knock at the gate, summon the guardian moon
though winter is nigh and the hour is late, she’ll open up for you

    outside hard times, redlines, deadlines,
    people you just can’t please
climbers and graspers, best-laid disasters —
we don’t make much of these

rest your head my weary sister, lay your tireless body down
with your tears and tender whispers, we will turn the thirsty ground
and the lords of constant sorrow will not dare to march upon
the bonnie gardens of tomorrow that spring up where you have gone, amazon

hard lie the hobbles and cuffs over the dreary day
but sage rhymes and oracle doves chisel the chains away

though clever jesters clip your feathers
    tether your pinions proud
prisons will open, bonds will be broken
    daisies will dance in rounds

rest your head my weary sister, lay your tireless body down
with your tears and tender whispers, we will turn the thirsty ground
and the lords of constant sorrow will not dare to look upon
the bonnie gardens of tomorrow that spring up where you have gone, amazon

so rise swan, open your wings, put off your duckling guise
carry the maiden born to be queen over the rolling skies

shine bright starlight hold tight swift flight
    home to the new-made nest
worries and maybes will not delay thee
lovers and friends await thee —

rest your head my weary sister, lay your tireless body down
with your tears and tender whispers we will turn the world around
for the lords of constant sorrow cannot bear to look upon
the golden gardens of tomorrow that spring up where you have gone, amazon

Lyrics from Tracy’s website. (Scroll down the page for this song.)

    ~

    Ok, detailed analysis.

come home, knock at the gate, summon the guardian moon
though winter is nigh and the hour is late, she'll open up for you

"come home, knock at the gate" Emma arriving in Storybrook.
"guardian moon" = Granny? Giving Emma a room?

    outside hard times, redlines, deadlines,
    people you just can't please
climbers and graspers, best-laid disasters —
we don't make much of these

Hmm, "outside", so the old days as a bail bonds person?

rest your head my weary sister, lay your tireless body down
with your tears and tender whispers, we will turn the thirsty ground
and the lords of constant sorrow will not dare to march upon
the bonnie gardens of tomorrow that spring up where you have gone, amazon

Chorus, like I said before, savior job of bringing back the happy endings. But it's not an easy job! ????

hard lie the hobbles and cuffs over the dreary day
but sage rhymes and oracle doves chisel the chains away

"Cuffs" = Sheriff Emma carrying handcuffs, a daily job.
And "Oracle doves" is clearly advice coming from Snow.

though clever jesters clip your feathers
    tether your pinions proud
prisons will open, bonds will be broken
    daisies will dance in rounds

"prisons will open", well Emma was in prison, but she didn't stay there!

rest your head my weary sister, lay your tireless body down
with your tears and tender whispers, we will turn the thirsty ground
and the lords of constant sorrow will not dare to look upon
the bonnie gardens of tomorrow that spring up where you have gone, amazon

    Chorus again

so rise swan, open your wings, put off your duckling guise
carry the maiden born to be queen over the rolling skies

From ugly duckling, to Princess Emma!

shine bright starlight hold tight swift flight
    home to the new-made nest
worries and maybes will not delay thee
lovers and friends await thee —

Dove and Swan, of course home town is a nest! Filled with all the people who love Emma.

rest your head my weary sister, lay your tireless body down
with your tears and tender whispers we will turn the world around
for the lords of constant sorrow cannot bear to look upon
the golden gardens of tomorrow that spring up where you have gone, amazon

    And the chorus again.

Songs by Dave Carter always have a million layers of meaning, there is probably way more I haven’t even spotted!

I would be remiss, if I didn’t say “Only You.”

Also, it’s worth noting “Lost Boy” was inspired by OUaT.

Hearing it, I think Ruth B’s a Panlix shipper. Just a guess.

    Dr Frankenstein
    By Jack Savoretti

    Self explanatory. 😉

    Dr Frankenstein
    By Jack Savoretti

The Dr. Frankenstein, with all the things you’ve brought to life
Tell me, are you satisfied, or are you happy now?
    Dr. Frankenstein
    There’s innocence in every crime
Some in yours and some in mine
    But it shouldn’t be allowed

‘Cause it’s not where you go when you die
It’s how you live when you’re alive
Who you touch and how you feel it?
It’s not about the time that you have
It’s how you cry and how you laugh
Who you love and how you mean it
    And do you mean it?

Dr. Frankenstein, did they think you’ve wasted all this time
On making monsters in your mind?
Well, I hope they make you proud

‘Cause it’s not where you go when you die
It’s how you live when you’re alive
Who you touch and how you feel it?
It’s not about the time that you have
It’s how you cry and how you laugh
Who you love and how you mean it
    And do you mean it?

It’s not where you go when you die
It’s how you live when you’re alive
Who you touch and how you feel it?
It’s not about the time that you have
It’s how you cry and how you laugh
Who you love and how you mean it
    No, no, no

It’s not where you go when you die
It’s how you live when you’re alive
Who you touch and how you feel it?
It’s not about the time that you have
It’s how you cry and how you laugh
Who you love and how you mean it
    And do you mean it?

    Silver Coin

I have loved this gorgeous song for years.

For a while I tried to make the lyrics fit CaptainSwan. A few lines worked, but the rest of the song didn’t quite fit.

But yesterday I was thinking of this song while walking down the stairs. I suddenly sat down on a step when I realized it was a RumBelle Song!!! ????

It may not be perfect, but see for yourselves:

    SILVER COIN
    Performed by Archie Fisher
    (written by Terry Hiscock)

    Now that I’m older
Though I’m not old enough to know
What it is to be lonely
What it is to be without a home
I’ve a friend nearby who loves me rain or shine
    Don’t ask me why
But her younger eyes are so much older eyes than mine

I thought I was well read
Wouldn’t have to ask her for a lead
’Til I read what her eyes said
Then I knew there was nothing more to read
Nothing more to do and nothing more to say
But give all my words away
    To someone who needs them
That can’t find a girl like you

I ran all the way here
To be the first to see the morning star
    There were others before me
For the sound of beauty travels far
I hear it loud and clear and it rings like a silver coin
    Thrown down on stone
Though I’m lost in a crowd
I know you’re around me somehow
