One other little thing, I re-watched Lacey the other day, and noticed that the smoke when Rumple took Sheriff/Keith’s tongue was black both times, like a cloud of ink. Off the top of my head, I don’t think any other magic has had black smoke? So perhaps he couldn’t do that trick until after he had the squid ink?
Didn’t the sea witch steal the mermaid’s voice in a way similar to how Rumple stole Keith’s tongue? Perhaps Rumple took the squid/Ursula’s powers when he took the magic ink so that he could take voices too.

Yes. And in the movie while Ursula is singing Poor Unfortunate Souls and making up her potion/brew to steal Ariel’s voice, she actually holds up a tongue and throws it into the pot. It’s a call back to the original tale I do believe.

Regina doesn’t necessarily require anything in return, that’s Rumple’s method of operation. If Regina got an excuse to go see Rumple and rub Belle’s “death” in his face, that was probably enough for her to be willing to help. But yes, my current thinking is that Regina helped her get back to NL.
1)Before Regina became the evil Queen, Rumple went to NL and got squid ink (and maybe the Dark Curse) from Ariel (we think). In exchange Ariel got….something. Wouldn’t it be ironic if Rumple gave Ariel her voice?
I dunno that Ariel’s ever dealt with Rumple. I think he probably dealt with her parents directly though, at the very least her father.
2) Years later, Ariel messes around with the Trident, open a portal to FTL, and gets stuck with her Trident.
I’m thinking she used her father’s trident to open a portal from the NL side, through to FTL, and she would have been able to get back, if not for Rumple taking the trident from Triton before she came back. If Rumple used the trident to open his own, fresh portal to get back to FTL, that closed off Ariel’s way home to NL.
3) Ariel encounters Regina and they strike a bargain. Ariel will give Regina the Trident if Regina sends her home (I find this problematic as Regina doesn’t appear to be able to travel without some sort of aid, like the hat.) BUT Regina goes to Rumple to get the means to send Ariel back and promises Rumple the trident. But of course Regina doesn’t do anything without expecting something in return. So what does Regina get from Rumple? (this is also problematic as the Trident is already in his castle when Regina comes to him at the end of Skin Deep but I’m just thinking out loud here)
Rumple already had the trident when Regina went to see him about a mermaid. He got the trident all on his own at some point. If Regina had Jefferson’s hat by that time, (not sure if she did or not, t-word wise), she could use that to help Ariel get home. But Regina couldn’t transform Ariel into a human, so that’s the thing she went to Rumple for help with.

Yes, in Anderson’s original, the sea witch actually cuts out the mermaid’s tongue. From the moment we saw Rumple take a tongue, I’ve figured it had to be connected somehow, (my current thinking is that he told Regina he’d give her a potion to give to the mermaid to make her human, but as payment, he wanted the mermaid’s voice, so he taught Regina how to take a tongue). Just hadn’t noticed until now that the smoke that went along with it was black like a cloud of ink.

What if the deal was how Ursula became a Krakken? In the original story, Ursula hints she had something to do with the death of Ariel’s mother. In the prequel they say it was a pirate ship. Then Triton banished her.
I think Regina will definitely change her appearance and make a deal with Ariel, but not sure she could have been in on Ariel’s mother and how Rumple got the trident.

If Rumple went to NL and got both the trident and the ink from Ariel’s father, what on earth does Triton get in exchange? That’s a lot to fork over, especially his scepter which is incredibly powerful. And why would Rumple need the trident if he got everything he needed from NL in the first round? And if it can open portals, why wouldn’t he use it to come to our world? If it’s one directional, that’s great and answers my last question, but it seems rather egotistical of him to take both the ink and the trident when he never needs the latter again. (yes, I know. He collects things. His magpie like tendencies might be the explanation)
I think I agree that Rumple and Ariel probably never interacted. Regina is hotheaded enough that she wouldn’t “want” anything in the exchange with Ariel except an excuse to go gloat over Belle to Rumple, I’ll buy that.

Don’t have an answer to the question of why Triton would hand it over. But if it’s a device that opens portals, Rumple probably wanted to take it home to try it out to see if it could open a portal to the land without magic. Which I’m guessing it couldn’t, so he just kept it as a trophy in his castle instead.
August 26, 2013 at 12:00 pm #206745kfchimeraParticipantI was thinking Rumple transformed Ursula into a Squid. That was what Triton got out of the deal, rather than having to “banish” her.
Another idea, is what if Ursula IS Ariel’s mother. So maybe she was hurt by Pirates or Pan, and Rumple’s deal was give me the trident, and I’ll keep her alive…and hello, she’s alive but in classic rumple careful-what-deal-you-make style she’s a squid. Bonus, for Rumple of course, is that the ink she gives off is super-charged-pure-magic.
Rumple gives a “your welcome” to Triton, and zips off from NL, having escaped with more than what he needed (some bit of the “never-aging” magic for his curse, the ink and the trident). He’s feeling pretty pleased about the whole thing, despite knowing that Pan is pretty dont-mess-with-him powerful, never realizing Bae was there.
This doesn’t fit with the idea of Hook’s backstory as someone hunting the squid then getting caught up with pirates of course.

This is all kinds of intriguing.
And what if, in retaliation against Rumple, the merpeople and Ursula joined forced with PP thinking they could hurt Rumple somehow. August 26, 2013 at 12:25 pm #206749PanTheManParticipantWhat if… and stick with me here.
Say a huge motivation of all mermaids is to steal the soul of a human. Okay, let’s also say that Ariel attempted to steal the soul of Eric but only managed to get half his soul.
Maybe this humanizes her and makes her different from the rest of the mermaids, also possibly giving her the ability to walk on land and/or swim with a tail.
just a thought.
I could totally see Prince Eric being a prince more like the original James. I definitely see Ariel getting burned by her love for him and Eric not being around very long (one episode tops).
