ParticipantI like it. Isn’t that something that happened to the character Angel in the Buffyverse? I know Jane Epenson one of the writers worked on that so maybe they would draw from that.
The whole idea of mermaids eating souls though reminds me of the Wraiths who suck them up and carry them to another realm. Something feels like it ought to be connected there.

KeymasterBoth Angel and Spike, the two main vampires, had their souls, though Angel had his thrust upon him as a curse and Spike went and won his back (because of his love for Buffy) and Jane was one of the key writers for Spike, so she could play with that.
I like the theory. Souls are mermaid food.

SpectatorIsn’t that what they kind of did with the Siren of the Lake already.

ParticipantI just finished a fanfic with mermaids devouring souls! I like the idea that Ariel has part of Eric’s soul in her which is what humanizes her. Maybe she stopped herself partway through (soulsucking?) because she saw what she was doing to him, her love for him stopped her.

ParticipantSouls are mermaid food.
Those poor, unfortunate souls. 😉
I could totally see Prince Eric being a prince more like the original James. I definitely see Ariel getting burned by her love for him and Eric not being around very long (one episode tops).
This is what I’m leaning towards as well. I’ve always felt that if Eric is alive in present day, Ariel will end up with him. But it’s far more interesting if she loved and lost him.

ParticipantThere is so much room for them, as the Disney version she’s with the prince but it is famous in the original story that the love is unrequited. Also, the story itself, it is rumored, was written in inspiration of Anderson’s unrequited love for another man. So if the writers are saying it has been their plan to have a gay character, what if it is Eric, and he doesn’t return Ariel’s affections not so much because she’s a mermaid, but not a merman.

THAT’s interesting. A real twist.
And yes, A and E have said (somewhere) that their Ariel will be a mix of both Disney and the Original which is super dark, but of course have their own OUAT twist. That would be twisty."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 26, 2013 at 1:08 pm #206762kfchimera
ParticipantThat rumor is from the Wiki page and is based on Rictor Noton’s interpretation of a letter Andersen wrote to Edvard Collin around the time he wrote the story. The Wiki page says Andersen wrote in the letter ”I languish for you as for a pretty Calabrian wench… my sentiments for you are those of a woman. The femininity of my nature and our friendship must remain a mystery.”

ParticipantYa know, just a few hours ago, I was looking at mermaid stuff on tumblr, and came across a pic someone had done where they’d replicated the scene of Ariel lying beside Eric on the beach, except it was a merman instead. It could be a good twist for them to use, if they wanted it to remain unrequited, but didn’t wanna marry Eric off to some other princess and just have him reject Ariel for no good reason. Eric’s loved by lots of people, so I can’t see them writing him as being heartless in not choosing Ariel, but if he’s gay, that would be an acceptable reason for them to not end up together.

ParticipantIn the original story of The Little Mermaid, the mermaid’s sisters traded their hair to the sea witch for something to help their sister get back home. The sea witch gave them a knife and said that if the little mermaid stabbed the prince in the heart and let his blood drip on her legs, then she’d turn back into a mermaid and be able to return home.
She didn’t do it of course, but this is interesting. If this is included in OUAT, I could totally see that knife being Rumple’s dagger. Idk how it’d work out but its something to think about.
