Harvested from the rarest species of squid from the bottom of a bottomless ocean – impossible to find, unless you’re a mermaid. Or me. 2×08(Into the Deep)
So Rumble didn’t need a mermaid to help him he could turn himself into a fish or something to get the ink. Which is how Regina can play Ursula after all squid ink is only used by a squid as a smoke screen which protects the squid from danger or trying to get away from someone.
It’s a possibility I agree, except that practically speaking, fish don’t have hands. Or opposable thumbs. They can’t carry anything. I think Rumple was trying to tell a bed time story and make himself sound pretty cool.

He could give himself gills or what ever so he could breath underneath the water kind of like what they did with Harry Potter story.

Right, I’m agreeing with you that he could turn himself into a fish with gills and that takes care of the breathing problem. But no matter what kind of aquatic life you turn yourself into, you don’t have hands. Breathing isn’t the issue here. It’s the ability to grab, hold, and carry. And if you want to say “he used magic” well fish don’t have voice boxes either. Rumple wouldn’t be able to speak a magic command; and without hands he wouldn’t be able to wave and make thing happen either.
I’m not discounting the possibility, I’m saving it’s sort of hard to think it through."He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"August 27, 2013 at 9:08 am #206796kfchimeraParticipantYes, it is possible that Rumple used magic to get down to the depths or that he traded for the ink. He could have meant either.
The idea of Rumple being a fish reminds me of a fairy tale. There are different versions of the basic one, but the one I heard was a song of the Golden Fish of the Sea.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tale_of_the_Fisherman_and_the_Fish
A fisherman catches a golden fish. The fish says he will grant a wish and the fisherman at first has everything he needs (sounds like King Leo) so says no. His wife however tells him to go and get more, making him return several times to upgrade. Finally she asks to be the ruler of the sea, and the fish says he could never satisfy the greed and takes everything away again.
So what if Gold transformed himself, then realized the ink was so powerful it interfered with him transforming himself back, so he had to make a deal. So that’s how he knew squid ink would hold him.
I’d cracktheory some more there, but really it feels like they’ve got a lot to work in with Little Mermaid and Neverland mythology, plus GOAT and Hook backstory. I am not sure they’d mash in another complete folktale but an easter egg nod sometimes they do, like in Red’s story, her boyfriend is named Peter (Peter and the Wolf tale) or Rumple saying Cassanova was nothing before his deal.

August 27, 2013 at 9:16 am #206797RumplesGirlKeymasterBringing the mermaids up in 304 with the ink is a good way to set up Ariel in 306, as a contrast. I expect that the mermaids Rumple will deal with to get the ink will be mean and cold hearted, but then Ariel appears 2 episodes later to show us that not all mermaids are like that.

I’m not discounting the possibility, I’m saving it’s sort of hard to think it through. In Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Harry ate some Gillyweed that gave him gills so he could breathe underwater but he still had hands and feet and a voice. He wasn’t a fish but a human with gills. I think that’s what HappyEndings meant.
I think the Lost Ones are going to follow the JR6 back to Storybrooke. The first 11 episodes will end with the JR6 having rescued Henry from PP and returning to Storybrooke. PP will be defeated but not dead and he will send Felix and some of the other lost ones to Storybrooke to finish the job of doing whatever to Henry.
Or
The JR6 return to Storybrooke with Tinkerbell as their prisoner after defeating PP and the lost ones and rescuing Henry. Because PP does care about Tinkerbell, he sends Felix and some other lost ones to Storybrooke to rescue her. The JR6 think Felix and the others are trying to take Henry back when in fact they’re just there for Tinkerbell. (This was an idea I had for a fanfiction last night). We could see a little bit of domestic RumBelle where they are put in charge of protecting Henry whilst the others hunt down the Lost Ones. RumBelle and Henry watch a movie of Henry’s choice which just so happens to be Disney’s B&tB which Henry chose specially then we can get some delightful Grandpastiltskin and happy RumBelle moments.
Having the Lost ones come to Storybrooke would not only connect the two halves of the season but would also be interesting to see the Lost Ones try and negotiate the modern world.
All magic comes with a price!
Keeper of FelixAugust 27, 2013 at 9:22 am #206799PriceofMagicParticipantIf Rumple did get the squid ink himself rather than getting a mermaid to do it then the mermaids must hold him in high regard as the dark one not to kill him. Charming and the others aren’t going to be so lucky.
Also if the JR6 has a bad experience with the mermaids upon entering Neverland, then when Ariel shows up, they may think she’s just like the other mermaids and be very hostile to her.

As for talking under the sea/ocean all Rumble had to do was scare the Squid which would produce the ink and the could therefore collect it. Also, note Rumble doesn’t need a wand to do magic with so I am sure he could figure out something to get the ink.
August 27, 2013 at 9:30 am #206801PriceofMagicParticipantI don’t think Rumple could just scare the squid to get the ink otherwise the ink would mix with the salt water of the sea. I was under the impression that it was pure squid ink that Rumple used which meant that he would have to extract it from the squid directly.
Also like the theory someone had that Rumple got Regina’s tear from when she was a baby.

Keeper of FelixAugust 27, 2013 at 9:48 am #206802kfchimeraParticipantI agree it it is magic and Rumple does not need to transform but could have magic gills, air tank or whatever. I don’t think it will be that way though since it adds nothing to the plot or character to show him diving in the water getting ink we knew he obtained. More drama in character to character interactions, like a deal or or something or if Regina does bargain/trick Ariel. The point is backstory for Ariel not the adventure of Rumple getting ink.
