Considering the integral role Robin is to play in Regina’s life, I think we might consider just who Robin is. Especially in light of that tattoo. Obviously he has that tattoo for some other reason than just to identify him to Regina. Thoughts on what that could be? My own two cents is that it is a royal mark of some sort the Lion image is very like the one on King George’s coat-of-arms. Another possibility is that it is the mark of criminal like Milady de Winter’s fleur-des-lis (the French symbol tattooed on those who were to be executed for murder). Call me an optimist but I’m pulling for something along the lines of the first possibility. Ideas?

October 16, 2013 at 4:03 pm #216380MysteryKat25ParticipantTraditionally Robin Hood is on King Richard the Lionheart’s side. He’s loyal to the true King and the fact that the lion is part of a shield in his tattoo leads me to believe that this is still the case. Whether King Richard is still around in this version of the story only time will tell, but he has definitely had the tattoo for awhile.
I’m not a huge fan of tattoos but I did enjoy the fact that he had the lion shield on his wrist. Robin is nothing if not loyal and he stands up for what is right vs what is easy. I think he’s going to be a great influence on Regina and he knows how to garner loyalty from his men which is something she never got the hang of. I think she’ll be VERY impressed by him and he can handle her.

Not sure where you’re getting exiled from, but King Richard the Lionheart-son of Henry 2 and Eleanore of Aquataine–ruled England for about 10 years though he spent MAYBE 1 year total in England as he was off fighting the 3rd Crusade. This was in large part because of Henry 2nd incredible rule and forethought that Richard was able to leave for so long. While he was gone he did leave his little brother John (soon to be King John after Richard dies with no heir) on the throne. Traditionally Robin was a noble man who went off to fight in the Crusade with Richard and the two were supposed to be very close.

Ah. Well Henry and Eleanor had many sons and Richard wasn’t the original heir. Henry 3 (often called the Young King) was but he died around 1183. There was quite a bit of bickering between Henry 2 and his sons, Richard being an experienced military commandeer, and someone who took after his mother–Eleanore of Aquataine who had the excellent habit of calling armies against her own husband (one of my favorite ladies in all of history) of course Henry also threw her in prison but you know–these things happen. A lot of the fighting often dealt over the land of Aquataine itself which was INCREDIBLY rich. Richard often looked to help from Philip the 2 of France, a very close, ally and really Richard became his fathers heir AFTER they defeated Henry 2 in battle and John agreed to let Richard have the throne. And then Richard was crowned and decided he didnt’ really want to rule England at all cause he liked fighting so much.

🙂 My pleasure
My area of history is technically the ancient world but this area of time has always fascinated me largely because of Eleanore of Aquataine, so glad to help out.
But back to the tattoo. This is Richard’s coat of arms toward the last bit of his life

The lion tattoo is probably keeping with the tradition of Robin and Richard but also meant to incorporate characteristics of Robin. So lions symbolize:
strength
bravery
courage
and often times royalty

Well isn’t this a coincidence I’m a history buff as well. I’m more of modernist late 18th to 20th century. But I also enjoy the Middle Ages from time to time, it must the Merovingian/Plantagenet blood in me . On the subject of the tattoo I’ve observed it has a good deal more in common with the Swedish Royal Lion and the German principalities.
For reference King George’s Coat-of-Arms
And Robin’s tattoo
This also gets me to thinking with the images how it would be possible for Robin to be related to George, a long lost son? Which is perhaps possible if the writers can circumvent the bit about George’s wife being rendered barren. He could also very well be a nephew, son of brother who was usurped by George whom we know to be a vengeful man. Pure speculation but fun nonetheless.
