Interesting that these two characters are in the flashback episode. Either while we see 28 years of history in SB, we will also see Ben and Owen (Greg and Dad?) outside of SB OR these two have a history with SB.
😮 Great idea. Maybe Ben and Owen saw SB magically appear out of nowhere when it was first created, and Greg (aka grown-up Owen) has returned to investigate the strange occurrences from 28 years before.
I’ve been wondering if perhaps there was a glitch in the beginning where outsiders (Ben and Owen) could find the town, and it was only after that that Regina put the barrier spell into effect. But I dunno that she’d have had enough magic to achieve that.
I definitely think Greg could be grow-up Owen and that he and his dad may’ve seen something fishy when the curse first brought everyone form the EF to SB. However, since there was no magic in our world except for a few magical trinkets like Regina’s ring, I really doubt Regina could’ve enacted a barrier spell (unless she had a lot of magical stuff).
Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis had this to say in the recent rapid-answer session:
Did Greg (Ethan Embry), the new stranger, intentionally come to Storybrooke?
Horowitz: What we’ve presented so far is exactly what we want to believe, which is [that] this is a man whose car crashed into this town.
Kitsis: I believe him, but you never know.I think this definitely supports the theory that Greg has come to SB on purpose.

Yeah that’s the main problem with this theory. Though we don’t know for sure that she didn’t have other magical stuff in her stash previously, and she just used almost all of it up to fix the barrier spell. Maybe she’d brought over a whole vault full of hearts and used the rest for this purpose, and just kept Graham’s.

Those guys and their infuriating question answering style. 😈

Hmm… I wonder if Greg was just a guy who was living in the area who got pulled into Storybrooke when it was formed by the curse.
What would also be cool if he’s a FTL character who lost their memory when they crossed the town border.
Didn’t Henry say at the beginning of season one that no one can cross the border because something “bad” will happen? Maybe young Greg was the reason that rumor and knowledge exists. Maybe something “bad” happened to him (or his dad) when they crossed.
Which would explain why Greg is so interested in what Belle can remember (barring her seeing magic); maybe he wants to know her experience with the mind wipe?

But wouldn’t Greg and his father already have their FTL memories replaced like everyone else in Storybrooke? It’s also heavily implied that the town line making you forget only happened as a price for Rumple bringing magic. Prior to the curse breaking, nobody besides Henry could even leave Storybrooke.

Well, my opinion is that Greg isn’t an FTL character but a regular guy BUT I think he’s got a history with SB. Like maybe when he was a kid, his father and he suddenly saw this town go into existence, or suddenly couldn’t get past the town line, even though they’d be part that point before. And so it stuck with him and he’s been trying to figure it out every since.

It makes sense. Storybrooke could have existed as another town before the curse struck, which Ben and Owen could have lived in.

That would certainly make for a nice parallel to Greg’s car crash entry to town. It wouldn’t instantly convince me that Owen is youngGreg, but it’d certainly be a good way of explaining how outsiders could have gotten stuck in SB back in the day.

Names Ben/Owen obviously they are from Star Wars and I have no doubt it’s Greg and his father but the thing that both SW characters have in common is they are father figures to Luke Skywalker. Owen his adopted father and Ben his mentor. Also his casting call states “He has a Dark Side” another blatant SW ref.
Trying to figure out how it fits is another story. I was hoping perhaps his mother was from FTL and used a bean or something and told him all the stories etc but I don’t see that working but who knows with this show.
