I’m not sure about this. I think magic replenishes itself after awhile. The BF said Regina would be ok with rest. I don’t know if there is a way for someone to completely get rid of their magic, except for the case of the Dark One no longer being the Dark One. Magic is learned, but it’s also a part of people. I think Regina needs to willingly give up her magic on her path to redemption.
Exactly & if something drastic had happened after stopping the fail safe- it would have been mentioned. It’s like Rumple’s dark one curse- it’s death or true loves kiss (both breaks of the curse are pretty epic). It’d suck if all it took to break the dark one curse is, say braking the knife- anyone could do that, esp if there’s no threat of death etc hanging over their heads- it’s a whole lot less interesting if BF or Emma can just wave a wand/hand & poof no more dark one curse 😉

The dagger was left behind in Storybrooke as well and it would presumably be quite an attraction for the people who want to destroy magic: if they knew what Regina’s ‘failsafe’ was, it seems logical to think they’d know about the dagger. (It’s also possible that Ms de Ravin might have scheduling conflicts, as happened with the actors that played Aurora and Mulan.)
I do hope that the writers don’t just drop Storybrooke and the Enchanted Forest in S3: I’m still very much interested in the characters that got left behind: Belle, Ruby, Granny, Archie, August, Gipetto — and I want to see the Nova/Grumpy storyline continued or at least resolved. (I never did buy into the BF’s contention that Nova’s life wouldn’t have been worth living if she didn’t become a fairy godmother. I thought she was an interfering old bat who, for all her moralizing, had no qualms about manipulating people into doing what she thought was good for them.) Ntm I’d like to see what happened to Aurora, Mulan and Phillip — and dropping Baelfire/Neal would definitely lessen my interest.
All that said, my favourite moments were Belle coming back to herself — a lovely little ‘real love is other-directed’ instant — and Henry’s hugging Regina. Ms. de Ravin’s “You lost your son” and Ms. Parilla’s “I wish I was strong enough to stop this, but I’m just not” were both tone-perfect.

I’m still puzzling about why Rumpel’s curse is not broken. Back in Skin Deep, he started to kiss Belle and the curse started to fade. He kicked her out. They had a reunion, and it was sort of unclear how they both felt, with various things happening–memory loss etc., the shift to SB and such things. Then at the dock, they have a pretty clear macking session, where they both love each other but nothing seemed to change for Gold. So has their love not reached that “true” deep state yet, or is it that TLK actually is not strong enough for THIS curse?
The other puzzling thing is, once Cora no longer held the dagger (when they were fighting over it in Gold’s shop), why didn’t the Dark One magic just heal the poison? Yes, the poison was applied before in the “so low it seems like no magic” zone, but shouldn’t Rumpel’s healing abilities have counteracted it once back in SB? Or did he have to physically hold his dagger once again in his hands to tap that power? Something of course, he didn’t get to do until after Snow used the candle, and Regina stuck Cora’s heart back. When Rumpel summons the wraith, he actually does take out his dagger to do that spell. So he may need to have the dagger near him in order to use some of its power.
Perhaps all Belle’s love has done is prevent the crocodile skin thing (the physical skin deep beast part of his curse)–which of course would save tons of time for RC on makeup.
Perhaps Regina was just wrong that TLK could break the Dark One’s curse entirely. After all, Emma’s TLK on Henry did not return them all to FTL or remove SB from Maine where it smooshed whatever random forest was there already.“If I had a world of my own, everything would be nonsense. May 22, 2013 at 8:21 pm #195743KebParticipantI’ve got some of my own theories about the way that the Dark Curse has affected the Dark One curse. (Darker, dearie, much darker…)
Since everyone affected by the curse is now both, Rumple is now both Mr. Gold and Rumplestiltskin. As such, he has that human person superimposed on top of his underlying human self and the Dark One self. The return of magic did not result in his limp going away or his physical features going gold–just as Jiminy did not return to being a cricket and the fairies did not suddenly sprout wings. The Dark Curse fundamentally changed everyone it affected, both in their memories/personalities, and, where applicable, physically. It may be that Storybrooke itself is necessary to maintain aspects of the Dark Curse even when it’s been broken, thus why Regina could still activate Lacey, why magic resulted in the town line erasing the non-cursed self, etc etc. It may also be that because magic works differently in the land without magic (or at least Storybrooke), the dark one curse is weaker.
I think that the Mr. Gold part does, to an extent, balance out the Dark One part. I think that it also means, in this world at least, a kiss isn’t sufficient to break the DO curse. I was willing to argue that there were reservations involved in earlier kisses, but the finale kisses…yeah, I just can’t argue that anymore. So I think it either has to do with the cursed self or the fact that they’re in the wrong world. Maybe we should pester Adam on twitter.

I think Rumple needs more than a kiss here to break his curse, because true love’s kiss is obviously still powerful enough to wake up Charming and Henry.

February 15, 2014 at 3:41 am #245134Hook’s GirlParticipantI liked how David grabbed Emma preventing her from jumping into the portal after Henry. It’s a nice tie-in with 2×1 when Snow jumped in the portal after Emma was pulled in and David missed going after them. David “lost” his daughter that day, and he didn’t want to risk loosing her again.
