I haven’t watched any of those. What is Penny Dreadful like? It’s horror, right? Is it very graphic?
Yes, horror and yes graphic. Though as someone who doesn’t like horror or graphic at all, it’s not overwhelming. They handle their very dark themes quite well because the actors can seriously carry their roles. Eva Green is just…sublime. Like good lord. It also instinctively knows when to put on the brakes and take a step back and let everyone BREATHE, something that high drama often has a huge problem doing (something Outlander knew how to do too…)
There’s some stuff I don’t mind, but I have a certain tolerance level. We tried Grimm and Under the Dome, but very quickly stopped because there was just too much gruesome stuff. Sleepy Hollow too, which disappointed me because I really liked the leads.
I suspect I would probably like Game of Thrones, but I’ve never tried it because I’ve heard about some pretty violent stuff there too. (I got curious at one point, but found a casual beheading right at the beginning. Nope.)
And I have never even been curious about the Walking Dead.
Strangely, I have gotten hooked on Supernatural since … season 8 I think? I always wanted to watch it before then, but found it too violent. They must have toned it down.
I do like certain psychological suspense type of horror, the kind that leaves a lot to your imagination. But for a weekly show I usually prefer happier stuff. (Although, I do love the Blacklist so … *shrug* )
But I got really curious last night, and took a little break from “paradise” to check out “Dark Matter“.
Here is my review:
My review is brief: I won’t be watching further. Didn’t capture me at all. It’s full of cliches without any sort of commentary on the trope-tastic-ness of their space drama. Cliches and tropes are perfectly fine because there is something to be said about these stock characters of the universe in the Jungian sense in that they keep populating our myths and stories for universal reasons about identity and the experience of the human race in all times and spaces but…there’s also a lot to be said about knowing that is what is happening and trying to go against the grain and subvert it or at the very least offering some sort of thoughtful discussion on them. Other space shows have been there, done that, and done it better in the first hour…and Dark Matter did not do it well enough to keep me glued because it felt like I had done it all before. But I hope you enjoy it!
I don’t need all of my shows to psychoanalyze the universe. It’s a fun romp in space (which is my favorite kind), the characters are fun, and I already like some of the actors from before. And there are some intriguing mysteries that I can have fun guessing at.
So as of the first episode, yes I’m enjoying it!

Defiance ep 3.1:
Ugh, yeah. Not happy. 🙁
They just managed to kill off ALL the minority characters. 🙁 It even started at the end of last season with Tommy. And somehow, adding two new characters who are played by black actors, does not make it any better! Because look who is expendable.
There were a few moments that made me laugh, but they got rid of a large portion of what I enjoyed about the show. I’ll stick around one more episode to see if Alak gets the baby back from Pillar, but I will probably give up after that.
I WAS going to suggest someone could watch it just to see Nicole Munoz being awesome on a regular basis. But I can’t say that now.
I must say though, that Graham Green, knowing he was off the show, sold the heck out of his last lines. Which, considering he’s Graham Green, is saying A LOT! 😮

Fully absorbed in Orphan Black now! 😀 Watched 4 & 5 last night, can’t stop now!

Dark Matter ep 2:
Well, I said it had a slow start in the first episode, but everything picked up in the second. 🙂 Eps one and two together really function as a two part pilot, it just wasn’t labeled as such. Now, with the initial conflict resolved, they have determined who they are as a team and how they resolve a crisis. And they are also beginning to determine their place in the universe, and how they relate to the big players.
The second episode was definitely better than the first. 🙂
That was a brilliant play, calling in the mining corp’s rival to help level the playing field! 😎
Three is just too funny, he cracks me up! 😆 Out of all of them, he has the most “bad” tendencies left over, and he loves it! He just seems to have fun being “bad”. (And the actor is clearly having a blast as well. 😉 ) He had some great lines, like “Slashy McStabberson”, and naming his guns, etc. 😉 And toting a massive BFG, LOL!
And Six seems to have the most variety of skills: pilot, fighting skills, and apparently medic as well.
The climactic fight was very well played. I normally don’t watch things for the violence, and fighting is not usually the highlight for me. But this was very well played, and strategically interesting, with a variety of action.
When Five crawled through the vents of the ship (I know, cliche 😉 ), for me that was an “aha” moment, because my theory is that she stowed away on the ship at the last place they raided. That she hid, and then set the technology to wipe their memories. She has the technical skills to do so, knows about what’s behind the door etc. She may have even set up a way to get her memories back, if that is what she is remembering.
So when she climbed through the ventilation shaft, I thought “Oh, that’s how she did it!”. Maybe it was one of those things where they instinctively do things they have done before, like fly a ship or fight?
And I know she said she is getting someone else’s memories, but I think they could be hers. She could be being vague on purpose, until she knows more about who to trust. Or she could mean “someone else” in the same sense as “we are not those people anymore”.
One and Two seem to be heading towards a romance. Which makes me wonder, were they together before the memory loss? Or maybe they didn’t even like each other! 😆 If anyone has seen Star Trek TNG, you’ll know there was one episode (conundrum ? ) that had the same plot as this series. There, two characters who hated each other (Riker and Ro), when deprived of their memories, were attracted to each other instead! 😆 (Talk about a rude awakening. 😉 )
One more thing that I think really works in the show’s favor, is that the cast has great chemistry with each other. The characters are quirky and diverse enough, that it is fun just watching their personalities bounce off of each other. 😀

Killjoys ep 1:
Well this wasn’t terrible, but it wasn’t great either. As others have said elsewhere, they put a great amount of detail into worldbuilding. But it came out high on style, and low on charm.
In style it could be similar to Firefly or Guardians of the Galaxy, but it is missing a sort of spark that those two have. And since it is impossible not to compare this to Dark Matter, I realize that, that one does have it and this one doesn’t.
And I realize now just what that “charm” consists of: quirky characters who are wildly different, with fun personalities to bounce off of each other. Among all the adventure, that is what made Firefly fun, and Guardians, and Dark Matter too.
When compared that way, Killjoys is extremely shallow and one dimensional. Each character has exactly one defining trait: The girl is deadly with a mysterious past, Aaron Ashmore’s character is a bit naive and trusting, and his brother is soldier guy with nightmares.* And that seems to be it, there is no indication that they will develop these characters beyond those surface characteristics. Oh, and they are all hot. (Aaron Ashmore is my preferred eye candy. 😉 )
So, one dimensional pretty people, in a show that is all style and no substance. Now, I didn’t hate it while I was watching it, it just didn’t grab me, or hold up to much scrutiny. I will probably stick around and see where it goes, I’m just not very excited about it. *shrug*

Defiance ep 3:
Well that happened quicker than I expected, Pillar is gone and the baby is back in Defiance! (But the Tarrs don’t know his name. 😉 ) They still have to rescue Alak though.
I think I’m going to stick around a little longer. Seeing Stahma work her magic on the Omec guy was absolutely priceless! 😆 And I liked how protective Irisa got over the baby. 🙂
And I cant believe they had Linda Hamilton say the Terminator line!!! ROTFL!! 😀

In other news, I’ve finished Orphan Black! 😀 Soon I will have a look at Last Ship and Mr Robot. And squeeing that Falling Skies starts this weekend!
(There better be a lot of John Pope! 😉 )

I just recently finished the first season of Merlin.
LOVED. IT!!!!!!!! Can’t wait to start the second season. I’ve also heard of another show called Camelot that sounds a bit darker but also interesting. But yeah. So I’m afraid I’ve been neglecting this thread. I’ve been reviewing all my summer shows over at exisle, and it’s all I can do to keep up with my comments on so many show, LOL! So I’ve fallen behind here, because it felt like I was talking to myself, no one is discussing the same shows here.
Though I will happily discuss any of the shows listed in my opening post, if anyone here is interested! 🙂 So let’s see, my current shows are Dark Matter, Defiance, Killjoys, Falling Skies, Last Ship, Extant, and Mr. Robot. 🙂 I will try to post an overview of these, but right now I am four reviews behind at Exisle, LOL! 😉
Also, if anyone else is catching up on an older show, like Watcher is, I will happily discuss it if I have seen it! 😎
