Think about it. Both August and Neal were “Poor Unfortunate Souls” 😆

This is true. There are a few handful of Villains that we have not really seen much to make them sympathetic like George/Spencer, but any villain with a major story arc, we do sort of expect to find out what drives them.
Before we saw Greg’s backstory, I felt that wariness and fear from our heroes, but then I was won over with his search for his father. Then we found out about Tamara–and it changed again when he was making out with her. I’m not sure why, but if he had just been friends with her, or she were lying to him about Neal, he would have seemed less sinister to me. Yet almost everyone seems to agree that she is driving things more than Greg.
What if we are wrong about that? What if Tamara is really so love in with Greg, that he is making her do these things? We already know his reason–obsession over finding his father. I’m doubtful myself, even though I suggest it, but if this is so, perhaps we won’t ever get a deep reason for her actions except she’s doing it all out of love.
I still think though she is the driver in their relationship, and Greg is going to get thrown under a bus when it suits her. GOAT can’t possibly be true love, could it?

I think we will get more of a handle on their relationship when we see them actually talking face to face 🙂 My suspicions are that Tamara is driving things – she seems to be the more dominant personality. Greg, on the hand, while determined, seems to smile from time to time and just seems more easy going. If he (like most of the characters), is searching for love, then he would have been easy prey for Tamara. I am very interested in their back story – how in the heck did they meet? Another spilled cup of coffee? I would love to see THAT scene with Neal and Greg comparing how they met Tamara. “She spilled coffee on you too?”
April 1, 2013 at 5:04 pm #183640gypsyParticipantGreg was an orphan.
Tamara talked about her grandmother, but not her parents.
Could be Greg and Tamara were in the orphanage with August.
Or, at least maybe Greg was.Edit:
Back when they stressed the fact that ‘Tamara’ was pronouced ‘Tomorrow’ – I jokingly said to my friends that Tamara was Litttle Orphan Annie.
Not that I think she is, lol, but, that could be the connection to the orphanage…????April 1, 2013 at 10:46 pm #183773DemiletoParticipant@PriceofMagic wrote:

I’m sure it’ll end up involving her grandmother, but really, do all villains really need to have a sob story? I can somewhat accept FTL ones, since finding your happy ending seems to be a big goal for everyone there, but our world has villains who are just outright monstrous and not sympathic at all. Did anyone feel sympathy to Osama Bin Laden? He was a rich boy financed by the USA, who learned guerrila warfare by fighting a war for religious reasons, also financed by the USA, just so he could one day take down the USA. Who really cared about his end other than those who were equally fanatical to him? 🙄
If I had any saying on what Tamara’s story would be, I’d have her and those she’s working with (I don’t see her being alone on this, she’s too resourceful with her shiny techno-toy that’s able to kill magical beings and her ability to test the Dragon’s vial with the most sophisticated techniques available to men, or at least I hope she isn’t) wanting magic because they want to use it to fix what they see as the world’s problems, a concept that could so easily escalate into a 1984’s Big Brother sort of society that the SB gang would try to deny them access to it no matter what. Alas, I don’t have, so it’ll probably end up being yet another sob story. I can just see it. 🙄
Sorry about my rant, it’s just that it’s a major beef of mine this pathological need for the villains to have a sympathic side. It’s not something every villain needs, Joker had no backstory in “The Dark Knight” and everyone loved him there. 😳
April 2, 2013 at 6:26 pm #183953PriceofMagicParticipantThe Joker is such an iconic role though so it’s not really fair to compare that with Tamara’s role as a villain.
SwanFire shippers hated Tamara the moment she was introduced because she would be standing in the way of Emma and Bae getting together. Most of the fanbase hates her after her actions in Selfless, Brave and True. They need to give her some sort reason as to why she’s doing what she is other than “because she’s evil” especially in this show where “evil isn’t born, it’s made”.

Fair enough on the Joker. How about Buffy villains? The only one who one could claim had a sob story was Angel. The Master, The Mayor, Adam, Glory, the First, they were pure evil, simple as that, and some of them were villains people really loved, like the Mayor.
Not all villains need sob stories. This “evil isn’t born, it’s made” is fine with Regina and Rumple, since them being main characters means their lives can’t be all about doing evil, but there’s no need for that for guest villains like Tamara.

Spike started as a villain and had a bit of a sob story past revealed in later seasons. Of course by that time, he wasn’t evil anymore.
I think the reason why the Buffy villains got away with just being pure evil and were still liked was because they were so charismatic and had a sense of humour. Spike was originally meant to be a villain killed off during season 2 but he was so popular with the fanbase that he was kept on the show. When Buffy kicked him into the Organ, he was meant to die but because of his popularity they injured him instead. In some ways I actually prefer season 2 evil Spike over Chip in the head Spike.
Tamara lacks that certain something that makes her likeable as a villain. A good villain is one where you know the hero is going to win, but you kind of hope the villain wins instead. With Tamara, I want the heroes to hurry up and beat her.
