One of the frustrating parts of this episode was the non logic behind Tamara’s taser. Tasers don’t kill people normally, nor can wood conduct electricity. Jane Espenson has tweeted that the taser is likely not ordinary, and Adam even retweeted her:

It’s also not a magical taser, which makes sense since Tamara claims to not be magical in any way:

My guess is that the “taser” has the power to work against magic. She had the magic in the vial to experiment on, after all. I think we’re going to see more science vs. magic very soon!

1) Tamara is an evolved human. Or in the least a group of humans who have been able to do magic. Maybe not magic in the sense that the fairy tale lands know but to reference a movie, The Sorcerer’s Apprentice where for instance fire is created by agitating molecules and the like. So it’s a bit magic and science blended together.
2) She may be a human from another dimension or alternate dimension. Pardon the references but in Fringe we see that certain characters have technology (very advanced bionic arm for instance) that came from the alternate dimension where such technology exists in that same present time
3) Again sorry for the references it could be that some sort of alien (or other dimension) power was found by her and her ancestors… like for instance Tony Stark using the power that is Asgardin in origin.
4) Another may be that her ancestors had an altercation with someone from another land who wielded power similar to fairy tale land and then seeks this power to try and destroy those like that person.
I can only assume that given her mannerisms, and the way she is seeking and collecting magic it is due to some sort of tragedy that happened in her childhood (to her or a loved one) or early adulthood and plans to use it in some sort act towards the person who committed the tragedious act or those like this person in general. That or perhaps something happened where she witness real magic, wanted to learn it but was betrayed (either purposefully or unintentionally) and has this anger and thus wants to prove that humans can wield magic.

Tamara definitely has a past with magic like Greg/Owen. I was wondering if she was maybe someone from FTL that got banished for magic abuse or something like that.
"We were happy."
"Because... it was born out of true love."March 25, 2013 at 4:39 am #182060MatthewPaulModeratorKalinda Vazquez herself, who co-wrote the episode, has also replied. This time directly to me:

So it will also be explored in upcoming episodes.
March 25, 2013 at 4:44 am #182065wewerecursedParticipantUGH…somehow that’s worse to me than a regular taser that can kill everybody. Blah. Lame. Not liking this! Stop it, Once!
March 25, 2013 at 4:52 am #182067david robinsonParticipantHow about it looked silly and distracting on screen? We stopped the episode at the tasing wood bit and had to laugh for a bit. It would have been the same if she had used a wet noodle; check it, it reads the same.
Tamara took out a wet noodle and strangled a dragon.
Then she took her wet noodle and strangled a log.
Tweet: It's not a regular wet noodle, we'll investigate this more in later episodes.See? Makes just as much sense and it just as dramatic! (Dum, dum, dum [dramatic music].)
Please stop.

March 25, 2013 at 5:19 am #182074wewerecursedParticipantThey can explain it all they want. She was wielding a taser like it was a serious weapon, and it was ridiculous.
March 25, 2013 at 5:35 am #182079playaritaParticipantI had an idea. This world is essentially seen as a fairly negative place. Now we don’t have magic per say but what forms of magic (how it manifests would be different) do we have here? In a book series I have been reading, the Parasol Protectorate, werewolves and vampires have excess soul. Maybe our own power of our soul have something to it? If our world is seen fairly negatively maybe our souls are more easily corrupted and made negative (and there are the good ones out there) and the taser is harnessing that negativity to neutralize the magic (i.e. The Dragon, August). The way I was thinking of it is that their magic has a positive charge and ours has a negative charge and combined neutralizes each. Or the way acid and alkaline can neutralize each other (battery acid and baking soda) but similarly can also be explosive (such as with vinegar and baking soda).
