Zelena tethered Merlin to Excalibur and now Arthur holds the Sorcerer with the sword. Can Merlin die if he’s run through with the sword? Does it work like the Dark One Dagger?
And what does this mean for Hook who we know gets his name put on the sword

Maybe Emma manipulates Hook into killing Merlin, so then Hook’s name appears on the sword.
Does this mean that Hook gets Merlin’s magic? If he does, it would be light magic. So the union of Emma and Hook could bring balance to the force… you know what i mean.
I’m eager to see how this plays out.

Merlin is probably already dead, considering the whole voice mail thing and the sword piece lacking his name.
And I don’t think the magic would automatically be light magic. If he gave into the darkness then the magic would become dark like what happened with Nimue.
Is Emma still tethered, by the way? I don’t think her name was on the completed sword.

I thought that Merlin was the only one who understood how the sword really worked since he was the only one who really knew the true origin of the sword and what it was supposed to be used for.
As far as Arthur was concerned, didn’t he just think that he needed the sword, the completed sword, to be the rightful King of Camelot (which is still confusing to me because he KNOWS he isn’t really the King of Camelot so technically putting the sword together won’t magically make that happen anyway so why even try.)
If Merlin has been trapped in a tree for years, I’m guessing he didn’t tell Arthur all the secrets about the true origin of the sword and when he was released from the tree he was none too happy with Arthur so I don’t think he was about to fill him in then.
So how did Arthur and/or Zelena know they could “tether” someone to the sword and control them? Were they just assuming that would work because the dark one can be controlled by whoever possesses the dagger? How did they know the magic or spell you have to use to “tether” someone? Did it only work on Merlin because it was really HIS sword or could they have tethered someone else to the sword? Can you “untether” someone from the sword or do they have to die and someone has to replace them as the “tethered” like with the dagger?
It’s quite possible these questions were answered and I just missed them. I have a husband, two teenagers, and a dog in my household who aren’t exactly quiet when I try to watch the show so sometimes dialogue comes across as ” . . . mrmph uhhhfu gluu Mary Margar . . . survivor.”
November 9, 2015 at 6:56 pm #312055RumplesGirlKeymasterIn order to answer any of these questions we need to know if the sword works the same as the dagger–I’m going to say it does. Basically I think it will go a little something like this:
–Emma (with Zelena’s help?) untethers Merlin from the sword
–Emma (with Zelena’s help?) tethers someone Hook to the sword in a future episode. Clearly not already because as @Matt pointed out, the sword is totally nameless thus far in present day.
–The new name appears on the sword and that person Hook fights Hero! Rumple

“One of Merlin cookbooks” according to Zelena. We know Arthur has had plenty of time to study them up in that tower, and it was his idea so it makes sense.
I guess this explains why Emma needs Zelena’s help in Storybrooke. Maybe the “Merlin’s magic” Zelena wielded (“and lived to tell about it”) was the tethering spell rather than the Wand.
Did it only work on Merlin because it was really HIS sword or could they have tethered someone else to the sword? Can you “untether” someone from the sword or do they have to die and someone has to replace them as the “tethered” like with the dagger?
I think it would make more sense if only the ones with the grail’s power could be tethered to it, but I’m no sure.
We know the DO can cleave themselves from the dagger using the sorcerer’s hat.

Well, Merlin’s intent was to make a sword that would cut the magic/immortality from him. So I assume you can be untethered and cleaved (twitch) from the thing that you are tethered and uncleaved (twitch) to.

Even though I fully expect this to happen, I still don’t understand WHY. To what end?

Reasons! Plot!
Or maybe because Hero! Rumple will win and snuff (twitch) out the darkness which has been Emma’s endgame all along. They basically gave it away this past week when she said something about using all that power for good.

I thought the point of that dialog was that the darkness won’t be destroyed in the end, but rather someone will be worthy enough to wield the power without turning evil and use it to protect people.
It’s Merlin who seems to want to go with the easy solution of just destroying it altogether so they’ll “never have to ask that much of anyone”.
