I didn’t enjoy episode 4 as much as I was expecting to. The storyline of finding ALIE’s lab was just a lot of running around. Oh, and Nyko died, and that was sad. The Polis storyline had a couple of good moments, but that’s all it had. The Arkadia storyline was the one I was really looking forward to. In some ways, it didn’t disappoint, but I did have a few problems with it.
Here are my thoughts.
– Jasper is getting more annoying each episode. Yet, everyone continues to indulge him. This season, they’ve given him the narrative function of being the antagonist to Chancellor! Clarke. Now, someone absolutely needs to take on this role. But not Jasper. He’s gotten so annoying that I find myself automatically siding with Clarke every time he questions her, even if his point is reasonable. I mean, when everyone is working around the clock for their lives, he spends his time pulling pranks and breaking into the chancellor’s office. And yet, he gets treated like some tragic hero. It rankled me when Clarke apologised to HIM. Jasper needs to be taught a harsh lesson or he needs to go.
– When Jaha suggested the idea of the lottery, I suspected right away that he (and maybe the whole leadership group) is planning to mislead people, only to betray them at the very end by choosing exactly whom he wants.
– It’s starting to bug me the way everyone keeps questioning Clarke’s decisions in a really aggressive way. She’s saved them over and over again. Sure, she’s made mistakes and might still be making them. But it’s not like anyone else is the epitome of perfection. Take Harper for example. She was outraged at not being on the list. But wasn’t she the one who voted to save the 25 farm station survivors at the expense of the hydrogenerator? If she had voted differently, the list would have been a lot longer and she’d likely have been on it. Similarly, hardly a word was said to Bellamy about this decision as well. Yet when Clarke tries to deal with the fallout, she takes a lot of crap. Perhaps they’re trying to show the difficulties of leadership, but I find myself getting increasingly annoyed on Clarke’s behalf.
– The most dramatic scene of the episode was Bellamy and Kane being told of Octavia’s death. I loved the tension in this scene. I loved Bellamy’s reaction. It was also interesting how long Roan and Echo hesitated before delivering the news. They might have some compassion after all.

– Jasper is getting more annoying each episode. Yet, everyone continues to indulge him. This season, they’ve cast him as the archetypal trickster; he’s constantly up to some trick but also voices some inconvenient truths. Now, someone absolutely needs to take on the narrative function of being the antagonist to Chancellor! Clarke. But not Jasper. He’s gotten so annoying that I find myself automatically siding with Clarke every time he questions her, even if his point is reasonable. If she had voted differently, the list would have been a lot longer and she’d likely have been on it. Bellamy, Brian and Harper never got called out for sacrificing the hydrogenerator – a decision which will potentially cost 300 lives. Yet when Clarke tries to deal with the fallout, her decisions are picked at, and challenged and criticised to high heaven. Perhaps they’re trying to show the difficulties of leadership, but I find myself getting increasingly annoyed on Clarke’s behalf. Next time someone challenges her, I REALLY want to see Clarke snap and give them a piece of her mind.

February 24, 2017 at 10:39 am #333480RumplesGirlKeymasterI 10000% agree about Jasper.

This this this. I was seriously annoyed by so many people at the camp this episode. In one breath everyone says, “Clarke will save us. Clarke will figure something. Clarke will come up with a plan.” And then in the next moment, “Clarke you aren’t god and you can’t mess with people’s lives like this.” They want her to lead and be in charge and be their savior until they realize that being a Savior isn’t all sunshine and kittens. It means making seriously hard, seriously tragic decisions. Look at how torn up Clarke was last episode choosing who to put on the list. She couldn’t even put her own name on the list, Bellamy had to do it! Now, I get that the others in the camp don’t see those small personal moments, but they acted like Clarke was Jaha 2.0.
I loved the tension in this scene. I loved Bellamy’s reaction.
I lost a bit of love for Bellamy last year but that scene reminded me why I liked Bellamy to begin with. His deepest story is still with his sister which is refreshing.
In other news: Octavia is epic (though I do wonder if her story this year is figuring out that justice and revenge really aren’t one and the same)
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"February 24, 2017 at 12:42 pm #333482hjbauParticipantI thought this last episode was terrible. Clarke leaving that list laying around was a dumb plot point which everyone could see coming. Jasper has been annoying. The three sky crew adults really just annoy me to no end and i have wanted dead since the first season and they are still hanging around acting like their advice is of any value.
I, also, am sick of people questioning Clarke’s authority, at least the way that they do. They give her no benefit of the doubt, especially when she is right and has saved their lives many times over. I completely agree that there was no accountability for the destruction of the generator and that was a huge mistake by those people. They will most likely either find a place to hide or some sort of gene therapy which will save everyone and possibly allow anyone to take the flame.
It wasn’t a good episode, but that happens with this show.
Ocatvia is still epic, but she does need to learn that there are other ways to solve problems then just killing it. Though, no one should be taking advice from Kane because he is also an idiot, in my opinion.

I have a few ‘yeah but’s’ with the second article, but I’ll post them tomorrow. Feel free to leave your comments in the meantime.
March 2, 2017 at 6:51 am #333685sciencevsmagicParticipantI quite enjoyed this week’s episode. ‘The Tinder Box’ was easily my favourite episode of Season 4 so far. For once, all the storylines were interesting, and I loved how the tension just kept rising and rising.
Some thoughts
– Niylah returns! Yay!
– It was great seeing particular groups of characters working together. Clarke and Roan. Bellamy and Echo. Monty and Harper. Octavia and Niylah. Raven, Abbey and Jackson.
– No Jasper – what a relief!
– I did not see that coming, but A+ for that shocking twist at the end.
– I no longer think the show will end with any 100. My new theory is that Raven will not only reverse engineer nightblood, but that Abbey will find a way to get others’ brains working in the same way as Raven’s. Utilising that much brain capacity, they might actually work out a way to make Earth habitable and live together peacefully.

No Jasper is a miracle. Good overall episode and I like that the plot is advancing steadily; it doesn’t feel like there are a ton of filler moments/threads (except Jasper…)
–Raven tripping out in the beginning was so fun to watch (small humorous moments are rare on this show, so take them when you can get them.) It’s also really great to see the show make all sorts of connections: without ALIE and the now super powered brain, would Raven have solved how to make nightblood? Of course, the other side of that is that if Clarke hadn’t shut off ALIE, then Raven may not have super power brains but she’d also not care/know about the impending doom. (Is it better to know or not know? Clarke decided for all of them last year)
–Bellamy’s face when he realized Octavia is alive. 3.5 years in and the leading male’s strongest relationship is still with his sister, not a love interest.
–That being said, is the show going to go Bellarke? Will it be significant? Just a hook up? I’ve never read them but apparently the books the show is based off of did have them as endgame.
–The stand off between our gang and Ice Nation felt like a solid, classic story of the 100. Conflicts between the various tribes are the bread and butter of the show. Also really liked Bellamy talking his friend out of murdering Roan.
–Let’s go back to space! This season keep recalling the beginning of the series and it does make me wonder how this season ends, especially with that ending.
–“Prime Fire doesn’t give a **** what tribe your from.” #ThemeOfS4
–Bye Bye ship 🙁 did not see that coming!

It was definitely a welcome break. They may be trying to make a point with Jasper, but it’s not working. I’m still gathering my thoughts about that article, but I’ll post them soon. Alongside Jasper, I’m still not sure what purpose Murphy and Emori serve this season. But I’m sure they have one, and unlike Jasper, they’re not annoying.

Yes! I also like the connection he and Echo have. Not romance, not friendship…but intriguing just the same.
–That being said, is the show going to go Bellarke? Will it be significant? Just a hook up? I’ve never read them but apparently the books the show is based off of did have them as endgame.
I don’t want Bellarke, but I suspect it’ll happen. I’ve suspected it since S1 Ep 1. It’s just such a HUGE trope in television, that avoiding it would be like crossing a six inch wide plank across a 500 foot chasm with people yelling at you and shaking the plank.
–The stand off between our gang and Ice Nation felt like a solid, classic story of the 100. Conflicts between the various tribes are the bread and butter of the show. Also really liked Bellamy talking his friend out of murdering Roan.
Indeed! For the first time this season, the conflict hasn’t felt like a poor man’s version of season 3A. Roan finally came into his own. Previously, he felt like the king in a chess game; critical, but not doing a lot himself. Echo also showed depth beyond her usual ‘Down with Skaikru! Rah, rah, rah!’ That was also a big plus.
March 11, 2017 at 9:28 pm #334088sciencevsmagicParticipantSo the show got renewed for Season 5 – how do people feel about this? I have mixed feelings. I can’t help but feel that the show is past its peak by this point. S4 has felt unusually flat. So I don’t want them to push the story beyond its natural progression until the plot feels increasingly contrived. However, I do still care about the characters. Overall, I’m willing to keep an open mind, but not allowing myself to have any sort of expectations.

“What is she doing??” “Being Clarke.”
Honestly, that’s all that ever needs to be said about Clarke, lol.
I really enjoyed this week’s episode. There were some great private conversations that had a lot of meat on their bones:
–The Clarke/Kane one on one for example. They have Abby in common but they are also a lot alike in terms of leadership. The show is doing a nice job of paralleling Clarke with the two adult leaders of Jaha (the list of 100) and Kane (the empathy). Leadership is hard no matter your age and all Clarke has to look to for examples are Jaha and Kane which is why she can be pragmatic and compassionate.
–Also really enjoyed the Clarke/Niylah morning-after conversation. I like how easy their relationship is. I’m not even sure I can call it a relationship but it’s like they both know that this is for peace and comfort. They aren’t concerned with the “what comes next for us” and it’s nice that Niylah brought up that Lexa lives on in Clarke.
–Octavia and Bellamy in the hospital room. Octavia is stone cold and maybe with good reason but it’s hard to not feel bad for Bellamy. Most of his character development and the center of his story rests with his sister so seeing that sister resistant to her brother’s pleas and worry creates a lot of nice drama. However, while I feel sorry for Bellamy, I also feel bad for Octavia. She and Lincoln were a great pair. When Illian was on his knees with Octavia’s gun to his head, I instantly flashed to Lincoln’s final moments too so nicely played, writers.
–“I think peace is overrated. It’s the fighters who survive.”
–The Luna/Raven/Murphy trio was surprisingly awesome. Also, worried about Raven…
— Hmmmmm. The final moment between Clarke and Bellamy…I agree with @sciencevsmagic that it’s hard for the writers to ignore Bellarke because it’s such a massive trope in TV. And with the whole “Clarke if I never see you again…” I’d agree that we’re likely to get something soon.
ETA: Season 5 news
–I’m actually pretty happy about it because I like the characters so much. I am worried, though, that the story will stagnate and become one Us vs Them conflict after the next. I’d love to see more of the world, learn more about the other peoples still living on earth, though.
