Many within the OUAT fandom have come to the conclusion that Regina Mills is indeed the Millers daughter. I also believe this theory. However, there is one element of the Miller girl’s myth that doesn’t quite make sense within the world of Once Upon a Time. The Miller Girl’s obsession with gold. Rumpelstiltskin granted her the gift of making gold, however, I don’t think Regina (or the Evil Queen for that matter) shares this same obsession. Regina’s interest lies with apples. In almost every Regina-centric episode, she is seen holding, eating or planting apples. So, what if back in fairytale land, Regina’s wish was to have the power to grow apples? Maybe she and her village were extremely poor, and Rumpelstiltskin granted her the power to grow apples for her villaige. The King, knowing this, decided to marry her so that she could feed the rest of his starving kindgom.

I read on imdb, that Regina’s last name ‘miller’ is derived from ‘milo’ which means ‘apple’.

As for the miller’s daughter being obsessed with gold–I don’t think she actually was. None of the gold that Rumple spun was for her and she gave up the only gold she had–her jewelry–on the first night in exchange for his help. And she doesn’t have the ability to spin gold herself, as far as we know.
I think she is obsessed with apples though, like you said, and that has to do with the Snow White fairy tale. It may or may not exclude her from the Rumpelstiltskin story. I don’t think it does exclude her because we know the writers like to do cross-overs. Rumple + Beast is the biggest and Snow’s Stepmom + Miller’s daughter seems a lot less far-fetched than that one.
February 24, 2012 at 6:34 pm #137619fairytaleprincessParticipantI agree with RiddleRaven, the miller’s daughter was terrified that she could not preform the task of turning straw into gold, she was not obsessed with gold but the king was.
As for the apples it just goes with what we know about the evil queen from Snow White. Snow does say to Charming in the pilot “She poisoned an apple because she thought I was prettier than she was, you have no idea what she is capable of.”
We also know that the evil queen told the genie “The tree and I share something in common, neither one of us can leave nor do we truly belong.” She also mentions in StoryBrooke that she is better with plants than with people.February 29, 2012 at 6:51 pm #137932SlurpeezParticipantI posted this on a different thread, but think it’s very relevant to this discussion:
After re-watching episode 2, it turns out the honeycomb under the apple tree on the town emblem may simply refer to the name of the apple tree. Regina says to Emma:“Did you know that the honeycrisp tree is the most hearty and vigorous of all apple trees? It can survive temperatures as low as 40 below and keep growing. It can weather any storm. I have one that I’ve tended to since I was a little girl. And to this day, I’ve yet to taste anything more delicious than the fruit it offers.”
The type of apple tree is called honeycrisp, hence the honey on the emblem. I think that the apple tree is also a metaphor for Regina. When she is speaking about how the tree can weather any storm and freezing temperatures, she is referring to herself. The more I think about the connection between Regina and that apple tree, the more I think her last name, Mills is connected to the Greek word milo for “apple.”

March 9, 2012 at 6:54 pm #138489SlurpeezParticipantI agree, Midnight Dreary, that Regina is unusually obsessed with apples. There is an interview of co-EPs, Kitsis and Horowitz, plus Josh Dallas, about what to expect in the run-up to the season finale: There is an upcoming episode that supports this idea of Mills being linked to milo (“apple”):
But the penultimate episode is a different story. I’ll let you theorize exactly what the title “Apple Red as Blood,” means, but I can tell you that it’s part of a final arc that will focus heavily on the major players rather than standalone stories — like the heart-warming one we saw this week with Grumpy. “Next week is who the big bad wolf is. And then we just take off,” said Kitsis. “You’re gonna find out why the evil queen hates Snow White, what happened to Rumple’s son. You’re gonna find out who the stranger is. You’re gonna find out what happened to Kathryn and her disappearance, and it’s just gonna go crazy now.” Crazy, indeed — especially with Mary Margaret and David, Josh Dallas said.
Mr. Gold will act as Mary Margaret’s lawyer after she becomes implicated in Kathryn’s disappearance (and, possibly, murder, Kitsis teased!), and, says Dallas, “Lots of things go down. [David] feels very responsible,” he says. And it will all lead up to the epic season-ender. “All I can say is I just got the script for episode 21 and it is going to go someplace that the audience will not expect it ever to go,” he said.

March 10, 2012 at 10:57 am #138536miaParticipantIsn’t it red as blood, because blood is used to curse the apple? Not in the original fairy tale, but in the Disney version. Maybe I made that up, but I always thought it was because of that (and red looks tastier than green or yellow …).
March 24, 2012 at 12:24 pm #139613vasalisaParticipantRegina’s Apples … She goes on and on about the Honey Crisp apple being so tasty and wonderful and hardy (and I totally agree, we planted a Honey Crisp Apple tree in our backyard), but the apples she has as props are most definitely NOT Honey Crisp. I always thought Red Delicious was the Evil Queen’s poison apple. They have that deep red color and classic good looks, and you can get them all year long, but the taste does not compare to HC. Maybe it is Honey Crisp, but it’s cursed, too!
