Anonymous asked: Hi! Merry Christmas! It’s your friendly CS/SF follower again. After the last episode a lot of CSers are CONVINCED that they are TL… naturally SFers are saying the exact opposite. And I’m confused again!!!! I would appreciate your thoughts on this (if you think 3×11 cemented CS as TL lol). Thanks, and enjoy your holidays!
I’ve been convinced CS is true love for a while but I think what’s important to look at in this episode is that objectively, most of the casual viewers who believed in SF have completely flipped. A decent amount of people believed that Neal and Emma would end up together bc “it’s a fairytale show and he’s Henry’s dad.” That changed with the mid-season finale (thank god because it’s a super gross, misogynistic, heteronormative reasoning to have and insulting to the show).
Anyway. This occurred primarily because of two things: Hook and Emma’s goodbye was given more weight to it. Emma approached Neal with Henry so that Neal got a chance to say goodbye to his kid, and so Emma could apologize for the loss of his father and the fact that he had to go back to the world he’d spent a hundred plus years trying to put behind him. It wasn’t a particularly personal goodbye. Neal says “this isn’t over,” but it’s clearly a general reference to the fact that they’ll all see each other again. True to his promise to stop bugging her if she didn’t show up at Granny’s, Neal has seemed to back off and there’s nothing romantic in this goodbye.
Meanwhile, Hook and Emma get the next goodbye – which is a big deal, because the closer to the end it is, the more important it is (that’s why Regina goes next with the game-changing news, and then Snow with a loving mother/daughter moment to bookend the broken curse). Hook and Emma come after Swanfire, and Emma gives him hope that they’ll be together by affirming that she wants him to pine over her. Emma isn’t the type to give someone unrealistic hope (she says it’s far worse than not having a happy ending in s1), and she’s been very withdrawn up until now, careful to warn Hook that it’s nothing big (- a one time thing, it was just a kiss, not saying anything after his confession in echo caves, prioritizing henry, etc.) between them because she’s figuring her feelings out and doesn’t want to lead him on unfairly. But Emma’s also incredibly RESERVED with her emotions so something small is actually a really big deal from Emma when it’s coming out of her in a moment of genuine emotion. It’s hard for her to put herself out there, because every time she tries, she just thinks about how she got burned. So to say she WANTS him to keep pining over, that it’s a good thing, is effectually saying she wants him period. But she needs time, like he’s been giving her, in order to reach that point, so he just needs to keep coming around.
The second thing is, of course, the one year later. First of all, Hook shows up at Emma’s door just like Henry did, and Emma TLK’d Henry by the season finale. Second of all, Hook identifies that FOR HIM, EMMA’S IT by attempting a TLK on her. Hook believes that she is his true love, the only question for him lies in her feelings – which are trapped by her lost memories. Not only is it a big deal from Hook’s end, but it’s a big deal from a third party dramatic standpoint because we know of two other True Love couples who’ve tried to TLK away their lover’s memory loss: Charming, and Rumple, both with disastrous outbursts as a result – the same as Emma kneeing Hook in the jewels.
When you introduce attempted TLK on someone with memory loss, the message conveyed is that it’s not longer an IF it will happen again and be successful TLK, but WHEN. It’s a suspense-building technique. This is the reason that 3.11 changed the game – it promised us that we’d see the Hook/Emma relationship develop on two fronts. The promise of Emma’s “good” and the promise of Hook’s attempted TLK. It sealed the deal for 90% of casual viewers, and you can see it if you read articles and reviews by any popular blogs as their opinions radically shift as they finally acknowledge that Hook/Emma is the obvious direction the show is going.
I want to marry this post.
Especially because I too, am convinced we’re getting a CS TLK by the end of the season!
