ParticipantI would love it if I’m wrong here because I really don’t want to see anything bad happen to Emma; but when an opportunity arises, a golden one like the woman who is the epitome if true live asking to have her magic removed and Gold knows an easy way to do that–he’s not going to pass it up.
The hat not only removes magic from a person but also traps them as well. Gold is also good about improvising very coolly when he needs to.

ParticipantI’ve always had a theory that his heart is a permanent pitch shade of black, not only because of all the bad he’s done but also because he is The Dark One, and thus it will forever be dark, until he’s no longer Dark One.

ParticipantI think it would kind of be the reverse of Snow’s–black with a spot of pure red (or even gold…hehehe). His love keeps him human…as long as he has someone to love, his son and/or Belle, he won’t completely succumb to the darkness.
That’s based on what the Blue Fairy said, though, and she’s sketchy.

ParticipantCould it be possible Rumple doesn’t even have his heart in his body?
Graham could care and feel emotions without his heart and Cora had some form of love for Regina, so it’s not impossible for him to care for Belle.
There are various points he could have done it. After Belle leaves in the EF for one. But for me, if he’d actually done it would be after he’s released from Zelena and discovers Neal’s death. He could pull a Cora. His son is dead, deep down he feels Belle will leave him, so he removes his heart, or what’s left of it, to avoid the eventual pain to come when she does leave him. He’s lost his son so she’d be the only thing left worthwhile. Why put up with that pain when the eventual happens. Maybe that’s why he’s all out evil now. He has no heart to hold him back and Belle, while he still cares for her, isn’t enough.

ParticipantI think Rumple still has his heart inside his body. Rumple has said it himself “pain is strength” If he took his own heart out, it makes him weaker. Also, he looked disturbed when he found out Cora had ripped out her own heart, as if that was something that was beyond his consideration.
I agree that Rumple’s heart is most likely black on the majority of it but with little parts of red poking through.

Very microspotic spots of red.

ParticipantFor the sake of argument, Rumple has a hard life, a difficult road, many losses along the way. He’s tried to overcome darkness, but stumbles, often.
But, he still loves. He still ekes out a few acts of kindness. He still is able to weep over lost loved ones, his father, his son.
Maybe, since he’s been faced the the cruelest, darkest obstacle, the dagger, but still manages to love, maybe, just maybe, his heart is brighter than anyone can imagine.
(Ok, yeah, I don’t actually believe that, but, whatever. No ONCE tonight and I’m bored)

ParticipantDoes anyone think we’ll actually see what Rumple’s heart looks like now sometime this season?
I’d love to see what it looks like now, if only to prove my theory that it’s pitch black. I’m okay if there’s tiny spots of red but I don’t expect it to be like half red/half black. That would just be weird.

I think Rumple still does have red parts in his heart but the majority is probably black.
Characters’ hearts through the representation of ladybirds!
Rumple’s heart
Regina’s heart
Snow’s heart
Charming’s and Emma’s hearts

ParticipantI think it fluctuates. I’d say his heart was:
Before becoming the DO: 10% black (I think on some level he hated Milah just enough to let her “die”, but only realized it subconsciously.)
First time as the DO: 30% black
Losing Bae and the years between then and the Dark Curse: 65% black
Realization that keeping his power will solve nothing, then sacrificing himself to kill his father: 35% black
Zelena’s arc: 35% black
Losing Bae (for real this time): 75% black
Killing Zelena/Proposing to Belle: 85% black and inceasing
Finding the hat: 95% black
5% of red left this season is his ability to experience mild guilt.
Rumpel: “I totally feel bad that Belle is being hurt, but not enough to actually change a thing.”
