So the darkness is a they, or a force/minion/agent of some group, not just one individual. Interesting……

If it did then since her initial magic (immortality at least) came from The Holy Grail, which in Once is either A source or possibly THE source of ‘light magic’ in all the realms (debatable I’m sure… did fairies get magic from the grail. Is fairy magic light magic at all or just shady?). Nimue became ‘dark’ after she killed someone… wouldn’t that mean that dark magic is just light magic that has been corrupted by bad choices/sin?

Yeah, I don’t think it could have originated with Nimue since there was the evil guy – Vortigan? – she killed when she became the first Dark One.

Did Vortigan have magic though? All I remember is that he had a mask and killed people. Evil would’ve existed before Nimue because… humans. But did dark magic exist before then? I think it’s an interesting question that I in no way want the writers to try and answer because they’ve loused up The Dark One mythology enough already. (I wanted The Dark Ones to be an ancient evil from the dawn of time or something. ‘Nimue’ imo really weakened the story)
I think they said that the guy Nimue killed was some sort of sorcerer. I agree that the dark one mythology was pretty terribly done. Very inconsistent with what was shown before that.
Just to headcannon some logic into all this, I think Dark Magic is magic that is specifically created to cause harm to others, with no other purpose or intent.
Now, let’s assume that Fiona is the creator of dark magic. How does that align with any evil magic user that predates her. Well, it’s simple. They used magic and spells and potions for evil, but all those magic and spells and potions had different purposes. For example, a youth spell is just used to make people younger. However it can also be used to reduce someone to a fetus as a punishment or to torment them and completely negate their existence (hey it happened in one of the wishmaster movies). It’s not inherently evil. The dark curse is.
Some spells on the show have been shown specifically to be called dark magic. So The short version; Magic can be used for good or evil. Dark Magic is magic that has no other purpose than to be evil, while light magic has no other purpose than to do good. Fiona was the first person to create a spell that had no other purpose than evil. We know that creating new spells is forbidden and apparently hasn’t been done in a long time. Any magic before that could be used either way. For all we know, while trapped in the dark realm, Fiona created more dark magic and passed it around to the world. So she created dark magic. But she wasn’t the first person to use magic for evil.

Not only because she can construct brand new spells of which no one has ever seen or heard of, but because her spells are completely filled with bad intent. Her magic is 100% dangerous bad news so that would explain why she is so feared and even well known. She’s probably like the Satan figure to magic fanatics. She created spells so evil she had to be imprisoned and yet still manages to escape her imprisomement and do more evil. I’m guessing most people can alter or change spells but only she knows how to create them.
Why am I not writing this darn show.

Is it possible that Fiona created Dark Magic retroactively as it were from within the Dark Realm?
