That roll was very hard on him. To get into that zone and get out again was very difficult, and he felt a lot of guilt. He stated this in several interviews like this one: http://www.avclub.com/articles/robert-carlyle-on-california-solo-american-vs-brit,90104/ (nice interview too)
“AVC: Does that make it easier to leave the character on the set when you go home at the end of the day?
RC: A wee bit, a wee bit. Early days, I was a bit racked by that, particularly when I did Hitler, for CBS [in 2003’s Hitler: The Rise Of Evil]. That was hellish. That stayed with me for quite a long time. I was 40, 41, and that was the last of that kind. It was really after that—maybe that was the film that did it—that I decided, “It’s okay to be you when you go home.” Children arriving as well: That changes everything.”
Just added his twitter account too, if any of you have links to interviews, films, clips, rumours, whatever, post them, I’ll try and add them to the first post so you get an overview of his work there, without having to go to all the pages.

I saw Trainspotting. I remember Robert was the guy who screamed at everyone and had “anger management issues.” .
Anger management issues, Begbie? NEVER. 😆
“Begger’s f**king psycho man, but he’s a mate ‘n all, so whae ken ye do?”Yeah, Trainspotting was also the first time I properly paid attention to Mr Carlyle. Love that film. Is going to be strange watching it again now…. wonder if I’ll have visions of Rumplestiltskin lapping over with Francis Begbie.
I might have actually seen RC before Trainspotting in Hamish McBeth. I never really paid attention to that show, beyond the dog (as we had a West Highland White Terrier just like Wee Jock when I was a wee gel) but Mum loved it and watches it whenever she can.
Also love The Full Monty. Another great but flawed parenting style on show.

So,I like him,but I on’t condone the fact that he loves to swear…..he is good in his work tho

If you would play a drinking game on the f-word to Once Upon A Time In The Midlands, I swear you’ll pass out halfway through…March 3, 2013 at 2:21 pm #176363jessieparadoxes of peopleParticipantI know right?I saw an actual clip from “California Solo”–the scene of the interrogation–on YouTube, and somebody counted how many times the f-word was said:9 times in a space of three minutes 😯 😯 😯 movie itself looks interesting.Robert himself, weird not seeing him in a suit and a cane. 🙂 but the swearing is just too much. 🙁

March 3, 2013 at 5:10 pm #176387spinninggoldParticipantYou have much to watch, young padawan. 😆
Actually, Robert Carlyle swearing his f-ing block off is a lot more natural than him being respectable in a tie-and-suit. Plus he is usually at the bottom of the pile, he is street scum, not the guy that’s on top. I think it is why I did not immediately recognize him, but was thinking “I know you and I like you, but who are you again?”. Swearing in European movies is a lot less frowned upon as it is in American, and to me it is not that irritating (Though Once upon a time in the Midlands might cross that line even for me.. but he looked so cute, it was still worth it)
We will start you off easy: Go find yourself ‘Mary Hotchkiss Ballroom Dancing and Charm School” (he even gets a suit for the occasion) and ‘Plunkett and Macleane’…. we will get to the hard stuff later.
You know I realise I have seen him go psycho in several roles ( I have even seen human trafficking) but he does so well that I have not even recognized him.March 3, 2013 at 5:34 pm #176389jessieparadoxes of peopleParticipantYeah,I already saw bits of both those movies.I also did watch various interviews of him on other things like SGU,California Solo,Origins of Evil, plus random interviews that I can’t remember where I found them. 😀 So I know he doesn’t normally do a suit and tie bloke….and thank you,but I think I’ll just stick to seeing him just on OUAT…

Spot the Rumpelisms, lolMarch 8, 2013 at 8:29 am #178170theeviloneParticipantI am actually seeing all his movies little by little, renting them from netflix. So far I have seen Trainspotting which I loved and had to buy after I watched it. 😉 The Full Monty which I am debating on purchasing, it was a good movie but seeing Bobby’s naughty bits just made me feel naughty and I don’t know how I feel about that. 😳 I just saw Formula 51 yesterday and it was funny, Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Carlyle, not a bad combo. 😆 I should be getting Carla’s Song next week can’t wait to see it. I hear there is a real sexy scene in it, it’s a romantic movie right? 😉 and I also saw the first episode of SGU. I have decided to wait to watch that show until after Once’s second season is over so I can get my Robert Carlyle fix during the summer. 😎
March 8, 2013 at 2:39 pm #178199sanasusParticipantI used to watch Hamish MacBeth with my whole family as a kid.. Myself, my Mum, Dad and my 2 brothers. It was a long time ago and we’re all grown up now (I’m 28, argh!) but I always enjoyed those nights. Saturday night TV was ‘treat’ night and we’d have an evening in front of the TV (in Winter anyway). I had a wee crush on Bobby even back then! He had a gorgeous wee Scotty dog in the series and my dad liked it as his family come from a place rather like the fictional town it was set in.
I’ve also seen Taggart but not sure if I’ve seen the one he was in (I think EVERYONE in Scotland is familiar with it. There’s been a mrrrrdrrrrrr!) I saw the Full Monty Christmas Eve 1997, also Pluckett & McLean (with Jonny Lee Miller, now in Elementary), 28 Days Later, Angela’s Ashes, Once Upon a Time in the Midlands and the 51st State. I’ve watched so much of his stuff just by living in the UK, we didn’t have much choice back in the 1990s. 🙂
I’d love to see Looking After JoJo, I’m fairly certain I missed it when it was aired (was a bit too young to really understand it back then). Despite being from Edinburgh I have never seen Trainspotting all the way, but I know several of the locations it was filmed. I’ve watched parts of Stargate Universe but we couldn’t get any decent links here (my boyfriend was a big fan of it and used to watch it when I was asleep.)
