The first thing I remember seeing RC in was The Full Monty as a teenager with my parents. I still can’t look at garden gnomes the same way after that movie. It’s one of my top favorite movies of all time. I had a bit of a crush on him and the chubby Marc Addy in that movie. Imagine my surprise when I realized by about “The Price of Gold” that my crush on Rumple wasn’t as odd as I thought it was because I learned he was the same guy in The Full Monty and I had already had one on him as a teenager.

That’s the mark of a good actor for me. I was the same, I was sure I saw him before and very happy to see he was from one of my favourite films. His role as Rumpel is outstanding though, a combination of everything he learned before, and you can see how much he’s enjoying it. That’s why Rumpel shines to me, and often I like him even better than Gold (though last weeks episode was a definite exception) I like dark characters, they are(like Bellle said) layered. Especially with Rumpel you can often feel his pain, and you just love him. Robert Carlyle is doing a wonderful job of portraying a flawed man, that wants to do the right thing, but has a habit of making the wrong decision, because like so many of us, he fears death.

I don’t watch a lot of tv, and my movie viewing is pretty limited too – but I did see Human Trafficking. I remember noticing his character because there was something in his haircut and facial structure that reminded me of a friend of mine from college – who also played a Russian character, though it was a student film and kind of cheesy (the pun was that he was George, from Georgia, and before he was introduced everyone was making redneck jokes until he showed up as a clear ‘Eastern European’ – which probably would have been funnier if the college wasn’t IN Georgia). I remember though all I really thought was ‘well, at least they cast a real Russian with a good accent instead of [my friend]’s goofy fake one.

When I started watching Once, it never even registered that it was the same guy until I saw someone talking about that role of his in some forum. After all, I’d just assumed he actually was Russian and put it out of my mind. Now I want to see it again…
