As episode 5 is fast approaching, I thought I’d post our theory here. It’s hard to go through so many pages and threads with bits and pieces that Gypsy and I have posted so I wrapped it all together here.
Frankenstein Theory: A synonym for whale is monster or monstrous. Writers said that Dr. Whale’s identity will be on par with Rumple’s Beast and Ruby’s Wolf. That leads one to believe that Dr. Whale will be a beast/monster of some sort. We’re going with Dr. Frankenstein at this stage of the game as there are so many clues leading towards it. K&H said, in reference to the Red Handed episode, that Dr. Whale couldn’t be tied down. Well neither could Frankenstein apparently, either in the comic book or in the movies as he always broke free of his straps.
James WHALE directed the 1931 movie Frankenstein, starring Boris Karloff as the monster. James Whale was also portrayed in the 1988 movie “Gods & Monsters”. His critics said in doing the movie Frankenstein, we could interpret this as “his feeling that he was a misunderstood outsider, a lonely monster”. Both Dr. Frankenstein & the monster felt persecuted and misunderstood (Archie’s last notebook entry for Dr. Whale was “Feels persecuted and misunderstood – paranoia?”).
Dr. Frankenstein’s famous quote in the movie “Oh, in the name of God! Now I know what it feels like to be God!” (God complex). In Dr. Whale’s dating clip he talks about listening to the best of Sting. Sting did a remake of James Whale’s Bride of Frankenstein in 1985 called The Bride. In this movie, the monster’s name was Viktor. Note that Dr. Frankenstein’s first name in Mary Shelley’s novel was also Victor (framed as victor of all conflicts). Dr. Whale also talks about sparks flying in his dating video and a single carnation. We all know sparks flew in creating Frankenstein via electricity from lightning bolts. Boris Karloff starred in 2 episodes of a ’50’s series called Climax. One episode was titled “The White Carnation”.
We already have an old horror movie werewolf (Ruby) so why not Dr. Frankenstein or the monster? There is a connection between the two as they show up together in many films, (Frankenstein Meets the Wolfman & Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein) thus Dr. Whale’s interest in Ruby.
On Gold’s desk there is a piece of paper with the name Schumacher written on it. Thomas Schumacher is Disney’s Theatrical Productions President and just announced that “Young Frankenstein” is going to be ‘Off – Broadway”. Damon Lindelof – consultant for OUAT and co-creator of LOST with Kitsis and Horowitz (OUAT creators) is the writer/producer of the movie “Prometheus” (released 6/8/12). Mary Shelly’s novel is actually titled “Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus” So all the characteristics in Archie’s diary seem to point in this direction.
Kitsis & Horowitz said there were clues earlier on in season 1. Dr. Whale said to MM, during their date: “I’m one hell of a doctor, huh?”. That line was in reference to the movie Extreme Measures, which was likened to Frankenstein because of its premise. We also know that EQ/Regina would have plenty of motive for wanting Dr. Frank in FTL. (thus the tie in to FT characters). Who else could bring Daniel back to life? That’s right, Daniel could be the Frankenstein monster! Dr. Whale’s identity reveal will be on the Halloween episode.
In Rocky Horror Picture Show, Brad Majors wears a single white carnation boutineer. We all know about the audience inter-action that has gone on for decades with this film. When people dress as Brad Majors, the white carnation is a MUST.
In Rocky Horror Picture Show, Dr. Frank N. Furter is portrayed as a lech from another world! It is so fitting to Dr. Whale’s wanting anyone woman he sees!
Dr. Whale is a womanizer. In the 1970 film, The Horror of Frankenstein, Dr. Frankenstein is portrayed to be a real womanizer. Kitsis, Horowitz and Lindelof are self confessed Frankenstein fans. I’m sure they know about that movie.
Disney has been promoting it’s October release of Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie. It’s an animated children’s story (another tie in to Disney & Fairy Tales/children’s stories) about a young boy named Victor Frankenweenie whose dog Sparky (sparks will fly – dating video) dies and he brings it back to life. Coincidence?
In 1×22, A Land Without Magic, at the end, we see a Dr. Whale, confused and lost in thought, sitting poised somewhat similar to the famous figurine “The Thinker”. Auguste Rodin was commissioned to make that statue for a museum in France. He has said that he based it on Dante’s A Divine Comedy and it represented Dante guarding the Gates of Hell. Mary Shelly also referenced Dante in her Frankenstein book, chapter 5: “I had gazed on him while unfinished; he was ugly then; but when those muscles and joints were rendered capable of motion, it became a thing such as even Dante could not have conceived.”
Back to the pose “The Thinker”. There is a band called Dr. Frankenstein, who released a CD titled “The Cursed Tapes” back in 2005. One of the songs is titled: The Mad Thinker.
David Anders tweeted “Fox news makes me red, white and blue with anger” which could be hinting at the documentary – “Nightmares in Red, White and Blue: Evolution of the American Horror Film”…which, of course, focuses on Frankenstein.
Now, all of this has been posted, in bits and pieces on this site, over the last month of so. Now we see, in the current promo, scenes of a young Regina, heading down a flight of stairs, with what seems to be Jefferson & Dr. Whale behind her. (who other than Jefferson would be able to leave FTL and seek out Dr. Frankenstein in another world and bring him to Regina?). We also see Jefferson & Dr. Whale running from Rumple and escaping into a vortex(?). Then we have Jefferson & Regina, standing outsdie a tent at night, someone inside the tent operating on a body and then lighting strikes a rod above the tent sending sparks and electricity all throughout it.
Addendum: David Anders has tweeted this: “HINT: My Fairy Tale alter ego is Animated (literally) like Roger Rabbit. K I D D I N G UnTruths R FunTruths! Giggling makes me Chuckle.” Maybe this ties into the Frankenweenie animated movie mentioned above that Disney just released.
Addendum: Regarding above tweet from David Anders. Regarding Roger Rabbit, Wiki says:
Many film buffs label Jessica Rabbit a “Frankenstein of Film Goddesses”: with a Lauren Bacall-ish speaking voice, Betty Grable’s legs, Marilyn Monroe’s torso and buttocks, Jayne Mansfield’s breasts, Veronica Lake’s hairstyle, Rita Hayworth’s hair color, Marlene Dietrich’s eyes, and a Judy Garland-like singing voice. So, either Dr. Whale is Dr. Frankenstein and Daniel the monster or this is by far the biggest red herring the writers have ever thrown out here.

Plus there’s the Red, White and Blue comment Anders made, which could be hinting at the documentary – “Nightmares in Red, White and Blue: Evolution of the American Horror Film”…which, of course, focuses on Frankenstein.Go Team Frankie! lol

October 9, 2012 at 9:02 am #156163UrsulaParticipantWow, there’s certainly a lot of evidence to support Dr Whale being Frankie. π I’ll be so disappointed if he turns out to be someone else!
Also, carn in latin means flesh, and carnation can be described as the colour of flesh.
October 12, 2012 at 1:25 am #156396TheGoldenKeyParticipantUrsula, great clue! I’ll be very disappointed too if he turns out to be someone other than Frankie. Part of me thinks Peter Pan is a possibility as there are also lots of good clues leading towards that. Not as many as Frankie, but still…..some good ones.

October 14, 2012 at 8:02 pm #156633gypsyParticipantPosted this in Dr Whale/Proof thread, but I’m adding it to TheGoldenKey and my theory above:
I am a Dead Head, and Kitsis and Horowitz are self proclaimed ‘Dead Heads’….it’s the whole reason the created the ficticious band Geronimo Jackson for LOST (switch the G in Geronimo and J in Jackson= JG= Jerry Garcia – this is a confirmed fact from LOST’s original run). Anyway, Emma has a Geonimo Jackson sticker on her VDub and in the S1 final, when Emma dumps Henry’s backpack, there’s a Geronimo Jackson CD among the contents. Considering the Grateful Dead influence surrounding Geronimo Jackson……there is a GD song, “Ramble on Rose”. Lines from that song:
Just like Mary Shelly, Just like Frankenstein, clank your chains and count your change, and try to walk the line.
Juat like NY City, Just like Jericho, pace the halls and climb the walls, and get out when they blow. The Mary Shelley/Frankenstein connection is obvious.
The NY City….New Stranger…???
There’s also a Jericho in NY, and there’s a Peter Pan Diner there…which goes along with the other connections I found = Peter Pan Pastries and Peter Pan Bus Line, also in NY.
Maybe the Geronimo Jackson clue was more than just a LOST nod. Why else show the GJ CD while Emma is talking to Dr Whale, during a critical moment, just before she grabs Henry’s book and ‘believes’…….???Others mentioned in the same song:
Mojo Hand-symbol resembles the red hand poster (Aesthetic Apparatus- Control and Capital) in NY City Guy’s apartment.Billy Sunday- Character played by Deniro in the 2000 movie “Men of honor”
Deniro also played Frankenstein in a 1994 remake.Crazy Otto- first name of Dr Frankenstein in a 1972 Italian version of Frankenstein ( Italian version- Little Italy connection). Also the name of a famous diner in NY- which goes with the Peter Pan Pastries and the Peter Pan Bus Line- also in NY. Name of a record label promoting ragtime music from the 20’s/30’s- old microphones in NY City Guy’s appt.
Wolfman Jack- From Brooklyn ( NY connection). Was a famous DJ (radio/ vintage microphones in NY City Guy’s appt)
October 19, 2012 at 4:45 am #157206midinbombinParticipantPerhaps….for me, with all the singlebrook thing, it’s maybe, a little crazy but Simba? From the Lion king…. (Whale = Sea Lion)
a. Good at making friends.
b. for dinner a single carnation
c. a visit to my condo (a huge land….??) where I will play the very best of Sting (In the Theatrical version of The Lion King, there’s a part STING), and the sparks will fly (like when he saw her father in the field).Classic βGod complexβ . Like a LION
I have no idea, could be anybody. Just that maybe for me it like Simba, and he shout to Charming “Your not my king” …. He said the same thing to his uncle Scar. πOctober 22, 2012 at 1:52 am #157476TheGoldenKeyParticipantYes!!!! I was thrilled to see that promo tonight! Bring on Halloween!!!
