Has anyone thought that perhaps at the end of the series, this show is going to be about how Emma had to sacrifice herself (and FTL) to protect all the other worlds, so that’s why there isn’t magic in our world today? Like, this is the STORY of how it happened?
I could see them killing off many characters along the way so it’s not like everyone dies in one big THING either.
I can the last minute of the series being a black background with the words
“But some say there is still magic in our world…. all you have to do is believe.“

I would rather it was something like the poisoned apple death where if she dies for everyone she is able to be brought back which is a normal savior story.

Sounds a little too much like Lost, with characters dropping off like flies each season. Unlike Lost however, this show has answered questions, and hopefully won’t kill off characters for the sake of shock and awe. I believe this series is about Hope and Love, and I think Kitsis and Horowitz have learned much from their experiences working on Lost. Plus, hindsight is 20/20, and it appears to me that they may have come to regret killing Graham, as they brought back this fan favorite in the finale.
Although the series seems to have a fixed end date (I believe the producers want 5 or 6 seasons), similar to Lost, I believe there are more family viewers, making killing off beloved characters a turn-off to young and old, and would drive down viewership. I’m sure the producers are hip to that.

One of the main themes in the show is sacrifice, and while it’s nice to want everything to work out happily ever after in our own lives, I think it happening in a book or show makes the story lose its luster.
I think one of my major complaints about LOST and Harry Potter is that they ended too fluffy. Everyone was with each other in the end, and in Harry Potter all of the trio survived. The epilouge was just TOO much haha.
You need to kill off characters in a show like this, because they are in War, and how better to connect to the audience then having it become somewhat “real” with one of their characters sacrificing themselves, or losing their life? If everything were to end in happy endings all the time then we wouldn’t be on the edge of our seat wondering “what if?!”
While I agree that they killed Graham too early in the show (not enough time for the audience to really be effected by his death) I believe that it was a good reminder to people that “hey, we’re in war, anyone could live or die.” and I think that’s what makes this show so great. It’s the risk of it all.
Some of my favorite moments in LOST were death scenes, because I was so emotionally invested in a character that when they died, it was just heart wrenching. Charlie’s death scene is one of the most iconic things of LOST, and while no, I hope that a lot of the characters don’t die, I hope there is just as great of an impact with a character’s death as there was with Charlie.
I also think it’s a good way for characters such as Regina, Emma or Rumpelstilskin to redeem themselves — to give their own power, pride, cowardicy, or faith in dying what they have so long neglected or fought.

The last decade has been war, unemployment, and a recession… life is dark and dreary on its own and happily ever afters rarely happen so people gravitate towards entertainment that gives them that escape. The good guys win. The guy gets the girl. The girl gets the guy. Happily ever after.
That doesn’t mean the stories need to suck and be one dimensional. For so long it’s been “in” to have stories that end too grim. Too realistic. If you don’t kill off a loving character, you’re not edgy enough. If you don’t leave the theater or turn off the TV feeling depressed, then it’s just not good TV/film. I don’t think so.
Stories that do have a nice ending are freaking refreshing. And I hope that OUAT doesn’t fall into that trap of thinking it needs to depress the crap out of their audience in order to be successful.
That doesn’t mean there shouldn’t be death and destruction and all that stuff. But, it should all make sense for the story. And I hope they don’t end anything with Emma dying because what the hell was the point and the message? “You do all this hard work, you make something of your life, you get what you want, but you’re gonna die before you can enjoy it.” ???? Nah, no thank you.
May 25, 2012 at 6:36 pm #147735the_saviorParticipantBut that’s the beauty of sacrifice, it’s doing things with knowing that you won’t reap the benefits.
Since I mentioned Harry Potter I’ll allude to it again and mention that what makes Snape’s story so heart wrenching, memorable, and personally, one of my favorite sacrifices is because even in death he still didn’t get Lily. It was his love for her alone that was a good enough of a reason to sacrifice himself.
It’s not the message of “You did all this hard work and now you can’t enjoy it” that draws people to this stuff, it’s the power of hope, love and the willingness to give ones own life or goals for the greater good, and not for themselves, but for loved ones or complete strangers. It’s the strongest message of love that one can give, and personally, more meaningful to me then everyone getting what they want and living happily ever after. It’s the message that despite all of the hardships, heartache and hatred in our world, the most important thing in this world is to never give up and to always fight for good. To protect it, at all costs.
I’m not saying that I want the series to end on a grim or depressing note, but more of that I do hope that some characters end up redeeming themselves, or dying in order to protect the greater good, which this show heavily revolves around.

I have wondered about them doing something really bizarre and having them have Regina and Rumple be redeemed and have everything “end” happily in SB, but then Emma’s final act as The Savior would be use their redemption and her own magic to somehow change the way things were back in FTL and give everyone their happily ever after back in FTL as well. So that would mean that Snow’s mother wouldn’t die young, Regina would be able to marry Daniel and wouldn’t get stuck with Snow’s father so neither Daniel nor Snow’s father would die, neither James nor his brother would have to go pretend to be the King’s son, Rumple would never become the Dark One so he wouldn’t lose Bae, etc. Most importantly Snow and Charming would still “find each other” so Emma would still be “re-born” as the Savior but her parents would actually get to raise her. When we find out who Henry’s dad is (I’m hoping he is from FTL) he and Emma would still end up together in FTL so Henry would still be born but not in a jail and would be raised by his parents in a happy home (not one where he is convinced his mother is the Evil Queen). So Emma would “kind of” choose to sacrifice herself because she would choose to give up the life she has lived up to that point for everyone else’s ultimate happiness (including Regina and Rumple’s), but she would do so knowing that she would be reborn into better life to be raised with her real parents and knowing she will be able to raise her son from birth as well. So the Fairy Tales would, once again, be changed from how we originally thought we knew them. We would see Emma sacrifice herself and “die” and then brief flashes of the changed lives of each of the characters, until we get to Snow and Charming with baby Emma and then maybe flash forward to her as an older child meeting whoever Henry’s father is. End of series.
