Rewatching this episode, the theme of the rule of law really jumped out at me. We see from Emma’s experience that “the system ” is blind to human needs. We see that law enforcement and the press are literally in bed with the political system. This is a world out of balance.
Balance in the world is possible only when power is equally distributed between social institutions and these institutions work independently. SB is unbalanced because two sides of the triangle are weak–all the power is being weilded on one side. In FTL there is balance because all three sides are exerting their power: the EQ, who represents anarchy, the BF, who represents order, and Rumple, who represents law (human attempts to impose order on anarchy through contracts and laws). All three must be equally strong and active in order to support society. In SB, the BF/Mother Superior has been in the background: either weakness or ignorance (caused by the curse) has kept her from holding up her end of the triangle. Anarchy–by which I don’t mean utter chaos but rather unregulated power weiled without regard for social consequences–reigns. Law is weak because law enforcement is weak. Law becomes a bunch of unenforced, inhumane contracts.
Order –in our world, delivered by religion– needs to strengthen itself. BF/MS needs to step forward. Only when she exerts herself will there be balance.
Which brings me to conclude that we can’t get rid of Regina (or BF or Rumple). All are necessary.

Wow! What an interesting, deep theory. I never would have thought of it, but after reading it, it seems just like something that people who were involved with Lost would use. I will be very interested to see if you’re correct.
