After The Sound of Music Live and Peter Pan Live, I’ve been thinking of the future of live televised musicals. I know Fox has a Grease Live in the works, and NBC has optioned The Music Man Live as a possibility for next year. What other musicals would you like to see? Granted both Sound of Music and Peter Pan had a bunch of issues, but I think the potential is still there for future specials of this nature.
For one, I think Disney should jump on the bandwagon and do live televised versions of some of their Broadway musicals for ABC. Realistically it would have to be one that isn’t currently on Broadway, as Disney is stingy about that type of thing. That means The Lion King and Aladdin are off limits. In fact, most Broadway shows don’t get DVD releases until they have concluded their Broadway run, as they don’t want to cannibalize on ticket sales. Beauty & The Beast, which was Disney’s first Broadway musical, would be a great choice, but that’s likely not an option as Disney is reportedly adapting it into a live action film. I would suggest Mary Poppins as having the most potential. Mary Poppins is one of Disney’s most critically acclaimed and popular films of all time, so why not counter The Sound of Music with Julie Andrews’ other iconic musical? Other open Disney Broadway shows for the taking are Aida, Tarzan, The Little Mermaid, and Newsies. Disney also already has experience producing TV movie adaptations of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella, Annie, and The Music Man. The main difference being those were filmed ahead of time and done so in the same manner as a regular movie.

The DVD version was good, but I know they’ve made it better since the DVD was recorded. 4) WICKED!!!!!!!! Yes, I’m very mainstream š and I also hear Spring Awakening is very good so that too

do they really?? Interesting. (Also, odd choice of station with Fox being smaller than the three biggies)
Personally. I’d like for them to stay away from Disney, just because of how beloved those are–try as they might, they won’t “match” the Disney. And I know that’s not the point, but humans being what they are…can’t help but draw a comparison.
I guess for me it would be Wicked

Yep, a Grease Live for Fox is set to air next year: http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/fox-orders-grease-live-broadcast-699348
As for the Disney thing, their Broadway shows have actually been successful, so I don’t see those being an issue for viewers. The Lion King on Broadway actually broke the record for the most grossing Broadway musical of all time, and Beauty & The Beast is still the 8th longest running Broadway musical.
Wicked would have a lot of potential, but I don’t see that happening until after that rumored movie version finally happens. Other suggestions I would like to see would be Les Miserables (perhaps to make up to the fans who weren’t fond of the movie, especially Russell Crowe’s Javert), Phantom of the Opera, and Spamalot (probably not as wide appealing enough to pursue, sadly).
December 6, 2014 at 12:56 am #292243WickedRegalParticipantFirst and foremost with me is Wicked!
But if I can’t have that….then I guess my next choice would be Bombshell The Musical!
(Bombshell was a musical about Marilyn Monroe that was being created in the tv show Smash(2012-2013)
Of course it’d have to be starring Megan Hilty as Marilyn/Norma Jeane! š
Not gonna lie…between Wicked and Bombshell…I think I’d crack and choose Bombshell…

2. Chicago-I saw this live and it is an awesome musical. I don’t see it on network tv though.
3. Legally Blonde-I saw this live as well and loved it. I was fortunate enough to see Laura Bell Bundy in the role. However, this would not be an option because it is still touring.
4. Mama Mia-one of my favs and I have never seen it.
5. Beauty and the Beast and The Little Mermaid would be another two choices.I am going to go see Book of Mormon in February and am really looking forward to it. We love musicals and are fortunate to live in a large city so we can see them.
December 6, 2014 at 5:39 pm #292265TheWatcherParticipantI think some of the more classic ones are the most likely to be turned into musicals, rather than the newer ones. Peter Pan and Sound of Music and Grease are all kind of classic, atleast in my opinion.

We can add: Phantom of the Opera, Mama Mia, Mary Poppins, Chicago, Cats, Rent…just to name a few.
December 6, 2014 at 8:42 pm #292270SlurpeezParticipantABC could air the Broadway hit musical version of The Lion King.
