I WOULD LIKE TO SEE… Princess and the Pea… loved CAROL BURNETT’s rendition ONCE UPON A MATTRESS on DVD somewhere… but I think Carol played the wicked mother in that one.

PBS airs broadway musicals frequently…Les Mis, Phantom, Cats, (and others not ALW). They tape the broadway versions and show them so you get a good stage experience. Check your local listings and you can see quite a few of them.
Thinking in the family friendly vein, as Nonnie suggested, Once Upon a Mattress would be a cute option (the one ABC did years ago is very good with Carol Burnett, Tracy Ullman, Zoey Dechanel and Matthew Morrison) or even R&H’s Cinderella.

December 7, 2014 at 2:41 pm #292311MatthewPaulModeratorIf a version of Les Mis has aired on TV, it wouldn’t be the full Broadway musical, but one of the concert versions. The concert versions just have the actors sing in costume, but without the elaborate sets and choreography. As of yet a video version of the actual Les Mis musical as performed on stage hasn’t been done.
December 7, 2014 at 3:15 pm #292312WickedRegalParticipantWell I’m caught between two of them…and it’s hard to say who’d win!
Of course, Wicked The Musical would be numero uno first!
But only if it’s played by Idina Menzel and Kristin Chenoweth(I know wishful thinking, but a reunion show could happen right?) 🙂
Then along came Bombshell(A bio-musical about Marilyn Monroe)! And I fell in love with that!
Note: Bombshell is real only in the television show Smash(2012-2013), but rumors say it’s about to become the real thing!
And Marilyn has to be played by Megan Hilty! No exceptions! And if we can’t have Megan…I’ll settle for Katharine McPhee.
But Megan Hilty(gal in picture below) First!

Newsies is touring. I don’t see them doing any of these soon. I’d love to see Beauty and the Beast or Aida though.

Actually, Mary Poppins ended its Broadway run to make way for Aladdin, which is currently performing in the same theater. RENT ended its Broadway run in 2008. Mama Mia ended its Broadway run in 2013.
December 8, 2014 at 4:38 pm #292511lorem ipsumParticipantIf the musicals are aired around the holiday season why not Berlin’s White Christmas. I just saw the musical last week and it is fantastic. Or She Loves Me which ends at Christmas.
Phantom and Les Mis have had anniversary productions televised even if they weren’t made for TV as mentioned above. If you want to appeal to children then the Disney route is ideal though IMO not the best musicals are from Disney. I must be the only person in the world who didn’t like the Lion King past the opening number.
Grease – I saw with my daughters and they hated it. Because it wasn’t like the movie. But two of my girls in two different schools (in different countries) were part of a musical production based on the movie. I think that’s the only way it will work. Movie version not theater version. Thats the issue you come across is that movie versions of stage shows are more popular and well known but not necessarily better. Whereas stage versions of movies tend to not stray far from the original. I prefer Legally Blonde the musical over the movie. Whereas Flashdance the musical was awful.
That said I would watch (depending on casting):
White Christmas, She Loves Me, West Side Story, Cabaret, Million Dollar Quartet, Cinderella, The Addams Family, Anything Goes, South Pacific, Singing in the Rain, Joseph, Once…and the list goes on and on and on
December 8, 2014 at 6:10 pm #292522opera13ParticipantThe 25th anniversary performance of Phantom was already recorded live, though not broadcast live, but it’s available to buy if anyone wants it. A few things got tweaked for interest. Their Raoul is despicable though. He’s almost violent on the rooftop. Christine should have run away from BOTH of them. :/ (There’s also a DVD live recording of Love Never Dies from Australia, which I have but haven’t watched yet for some reason…I saw the show live in London and…meh. Also there’s a filmed version of David Hasselhoff in Jekyll and Hyde running around somewhere…but frankly, I’d rather listen to the music than watch the show…it’s so dark.)
I think a live Mary Poppins is a likely candidate. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the musical, which I saw done by a very good regional theatre. I kinda thought I’d burned out on it as a kid, but there was just enough new material to make it fun.
The Little Mermaid never really traveled properly, did it? The Broadway show was SO beautiful, and then it went to Utah or something and the costuming looked hideous…and now I think they have a reduced version that kids theatres perform…what’s with that? The music, certainly, was much better than what they’ve added back into Aladdin. So sure, if Mermaid’s never getting a proper run in L.A. or anything, I’d like to see them do it live.
Oliver! Is a likely candidate. In my experience, that and Music Man and Annie are performed more often than any other shows, likely because they have such a large cast of children (This might also be off-putting to people putting on a live show.) Since the new Annie movie just came out, I’d give that a few years.
December 8, 2014 at 6:22 pm #292525JosephineParticipantMy money is on The Music Man being the next. There’s been chatter and rumors about it and it’s very family friendly. Although I would love South Pacific, probably one of my favorites.
