KeymasterThis thought just popped into my head. If Gorham is the Wizard of Oz, I wanna put down some cookies that his name is Frank. (as in L. Baum)

ParticipantFirst let me say sorry if this sounds like a bash torwards Hook & CS but it’s not it’s more of a rant about promotion of a product then anything else
This is what upsets me about the media & ABC’s Marketing Department
Hook seems to be the one who is promoted the most out of everyone in the cast and Once is not even built around him but yet the character is the darling of the ABC’s marketing department because of his good looks and & leather.
I feel like ABC wants to cater only to the fangirls of Hook by promoting him as well CS
I don’t know how anyone else feels but I’m tired of having CS & Hook being shoved in my face every day by ABC & The media.
Not everyone is in love with Hook or the idea that Emma could actually choose someone like him.As I said sorry about the rant

ParticipantLisas as I said in chat, we all love the show and want it to do well in terms of numbers. So sad as it is to see a disparity in the promotion team’s focus, the media is going to ask questions about things they think get fans excited and online promotion team is trying to reach the sorts of fans who actively talk to them. That doesn’t mean it all matches up to what the writers are doing exactly. If it ends up being reflective of the writer’s attitudes though, well then I’ll reconsider whether its a show I want to see–doesn’t make it a bad show but just not right for me.
I loved the Game of Thrones books, but the HBO series was too graphic for me.. I’ve heard awesome things about Grimm, Fringe, Walking Dead–but again, not something I can get myself into the mood about. I wanted a lighter tone, hopeful mix of action, adventure and magic.
Season 1 walked a fascinating line but it reeled me in but as with Heroes, the way the show continues to develop isn’t quite hitting all the marks for me right now. Heroes was the last show I spent so much time thinking about, and so many articles try to analyze where it went wrong.
Maybe OUAT isn’t “going wrong” but doesn’t mean its going to go a way that’s right for all of its current set of fans. We’ll have to see what happens but I think A&E realize that not everyone was giving the last season super high marks. Obviously as much as Hook does for fangirls–he doesn’t have that effect on everyone. It’s sort of like Justin Bieber. There’s girls that ADORE him and will defend him against all comers, but then there’s a lot of people who just rolll their eyes when he’s mentioned.

KeymasterLisa, while I understand your position and to a certain extent I do agree as I wish the marketing team would be more fair (when was the last them they did anything on Snowing for instance) at the end of the day Hollywood and TV is a business that runs on money provided by companies that want to be seen during commercials. You know that. And Colin in his leather with his eyeliner, spouting romantic lines and having moments with JMo is marketable. The execs at ABC can go to a big company–like Coca-Cola–and say, “this is a guy the internet is excited about. He’s hot, he’s a classic character, he gets big internet buzz (because no matter what you ship or how you feel, Hook/CS is VERY popular in the fandom). We’re going to promote the heck out of him because of all these factors which means more eyeballs will be looking at your product on air.” And that’s what advertisers care about. How many sets of (18-49yr old) eyes will be watching ONCE every week. And if you can promise those companies numbers you have to show them something titillating and enticing.
The whole cast is gorgeous and wonderful. The dynamic of ONCE is great overall. But the marketing team is concerned with one thing: keeping the lights on. So they play to their strengths. Like I said, I wish it was more fair to the rest of the fandom but that’s because I’m part of the fandom.
And marketing and writing are two separate divisions. Adam always says, “we’re not responsible for promoting” so they have no control over it. They just write their scripts.

ParticipantExactly and sometimes a star is just born and that’s the way it goes, they get all the limelight even if the show wasn’t ALL about them it can become mostly that way.
Zach Quinto is an example for Heroes, which is one reason I mentioned that show but its happened in Hollywood for ever, “Breakout star”. That can upset the applecart in terms of the writing for a serial and the power/egos of other actors. It’s hard to say why Heroes imploded but much as some people adored the brain eating serial killer with mutant powers, my dislike for the character grew when they started trying to make him sympathetic and then killed off another character I liked to accomplish making him closer to another main character. It wasn’t a romantic triangle thing (brotherly relationship)–but there was sort of a romance thing too with another character (ick). Hard to relate it all as the plot grew supertwisty.
I hope A&E studied up what happened to that show, and in general have a different Tv rating environment. So I know they’re trying to do what they can to keep up ratings, but also express themselves creatively–but if something has to take a hit in TV, its creative expression. Whatever story they wanted, their vision, is something that they’ve already admitted to changing for so many reasons. Whether it was the network execs looking at the pilot and saying “You can’t kill Charming!” to whatever happened that led to all the actors who they had on and now cannot get back to wrap up storylines, TV is a tough business.
I hope all the actors in the main cast are happy but if they aren’t? At any point they’re people who have long-term careers to think about, their work/life balance and just simple creative fulfillment. I loved Mr. Eko as a character on LOST, and the writers made the part for the actor who played him, changing many details as he requested. Yet the actor (hard name to spell ) apparently disliked living in Hawaii. That blows my mind but everyone likes different things. Maybe some of the crew hate Vancouver, we don’t know! We have absolutely no idea unless they give an interview that hints at how they feel and so far every press event, the cast just looks so tight-knit and content.
So I’m going to hope that there’s no big changes in terms of the intentions of the writers and level of focus for the ensemble. If that’s not the case–I got over Heroes (kind of!) and I’ll get over this too 😛

ParticipantSo many interviews…So little news! That’s all I’ve got to say about that.

Participant🙂 WR very true! March is a long way away. I’m going to hope for a good story, that’s all.
