Exactly. And part of the fun of this fandom is getting attached to your little theories or headcanon or ships and playing with them.

So that would make him part mermaid! Why would he hate mermaids if he’s part one? These rumors are getting out of control.
September 2, 2013 at 12:18 pm #207627kfchimeraParticipantwell, it’s all just rumors at this point, isn’t it? We’re all speculating and other fans have every bit as much right to think of ways consistent with their hopes for the show as we do.
Now that Eric cannot be Hook, I assume there’ll be some who jump off the ship, but I am still up for it being a mix of Andersen’s unrequited love and Disney. After reading about Andersen’s inspiration for the story, I am also totally up for them to make a twist for a LGBT character here, though I prefer it not be Ariel merely for Hookriel sake. If it is Ariel though, then that’s cool too.
I’ve also read some who are convinced ERIC is Regina’s love, and that Ariel will only be a 1 episode character! Kind of the inverse of Hookriel….it’s I don’t even know the ship name.
If Hook were Ariel’s son, then he might hate mermaids just like Red was afraid of werewolves without knowing she was one. I’m ok with that. There’s nothing illogical (other than timeline headaches really, but if Ariel is immortal or went to NL, that cures that I guess…).
But right now, the idea of Hookriel appeals so much more to me. I even like the fanvids with animated HOok and Ariel together !

I would like to see that Eric is in Storybrooke “married” to Vanessa (yes, I know Ursula was Vanessa in TLM but Once can make her a separate person) and wishes to remain with her after Ariel comes to Storybrooke. How heartbreaking would it be for Ariel to be fighting to be reunited with the man she loves, only to find that he has moved on and doesn’t wish to revisit the past! I’m posted this before, but I’d love this because it would show the larger effect of the curse on the other people in Storybrooke. And cause lots of angst and anger among the staunch fans of Disney’s version of The Little Mermaid. 😛

Was thinking about that a bit earlier. Looking through Adam’s recent tweets, (he’d been having one of those days on Twitter), he said…
@CatherineDancy @heckl45 there is ZERO cause and effect to what you're saying. Any plans were already in works
— Adam Horowitz (@AdamHorowitzLA) September 2, 2013
…which made it sound like they already have an LGBT character storyline actually in mind. Sounds like it’s probably gonna happen this season. Right now they’re working on the first half of the season. If they made Eric gay, they could do the unrequited love storyline, without making him look like a heartless guy who just didn’t wanna be with Ariel. She could be initially disappointed, considering she’d fallen in love with him, but then accept him for who he is, and they could remain friends, (the prince and the mermaid were close in Anderson’s, even though he never saw her in a romantic light). This could then be reflected in a storyline where Hook discovers she’s a mermaid, and has to go through that same acceptance arc that she went through with Eric in the past.
And maybe Eric ended up in SB and we could see him get his happily ever after once the focus of the show shifts back there. They could tie him to the already existing cast by pairing him up with Archie. Eric didn’t end up with Ariel, but he still ended up with a redhead anyway. 😉
Seriously though, I actually think it could be done in a way that’s a lovely little nod to Anderson’s original inspiration for the story, bringing his original, underlying intent to fruition, taking something he felt he had to hide, the love one man can have for another, and showing that it’s something that doesn’t have to be hidden. If they want a basis for a gay character, this could be a great opportunity. With fairytales, so often the endgames are set in stone, and they’re hetero couples, so messing with that may be something they’re wary of. If so, they need a character with a bit more flexibility, and the source material in this case could offer them something to work with in that regard.
September 2, 2013 at 12:51 pm #207639JosephineParticipantI could work with Eric being gay. That would fit in nicely, Phee, like you said with the Anderson’s unrequited love angle.
I wonder what the twitter reaction would be if they made Ariel gay? Adam, you better hunker down and prepare for battle no matter what you do. 😛

Now that Once Upon a Time has cast both Ariel and Eric, can you give us anything new on what their story might be? – Jacquelyn
I already slapped my theory onto the news story announcing Eric’s casting, but I can add this: Series cocreator Adam Horowitz, when asked to describe Once’s Ariel in three words, effectively evokes her classic characterization: “Adventurous. Spitfire. Romantic.” And then we joked about how the Little Mermaid had to move to Cleveland, because, well, Adam and I are nerdy Yankee fans.Adventurous – Pirates are that.
Spitfire – Hook is definitely that.
Romantic – He’s been dedicated to his love for about 300 years.
Perfect match much? 😉September 6, 2013 at 8:46 am #208349RumplesGirlKeymasterI think Eric is in SB and married to Vanessa and in love with her. They haven’t explored that idea yet: what if your Cursed Life WAS your happy ending??
"He was a lot of things to me" "The only conclusion was love"September 6, 2013 at 8:59 am #208353JosephineParticipantI think it would be fascinating to explore how the curse affected others. It wouldn’t be shocking to find out that some of the residents of Storybrooke like their cursed life and wish to not give up that part of themselves.
