It is interesting that he said they were liars. That implies previous conversation, though it could be stories he heard.
His reaction to them was just so negative that there has to be some major history between him and merkfolk.

Perhaps that’s why the mermaids attacked. They are good sometimes but recognize Hooks ship and were getting revenge for when he killed their queen. Just thought id say.

I kind of had a feeling that they attacked the ship on purpose, because that didn’t happen the previous time we saw Hook’s ship, nor was there some hint it COULD happen. All that Hook said was if you sink in the water the curse might hit you.
I think maybe Pan played a game on Hook to get him to attack the mermaids who will sub in for the “native” tribe part of the story, being the natural inhabitants of NL. Creatures of pure magic and imagination, like a fairy, they aren’t “born” so much as invented. I think Ariel is not the same type.

October 5, 2013 at 12:44 am #214035PheeParticipantWay back when I was first cooking up Hookriel headcanon, I wondered if perhaps the JR had accidentally killed Ariel’s mother when it came crashing out of the portal, in keeping with the Disney canon of a pirate ship having killed her.
Now that we’ve actually seen how the ship comes out of a portal, I could totally see it if the last time it happened, an unlucky mermaid got in the way and got crunched when the ship fell back down into the water. Merfolk would have an instant vendetta against Hook, his crew, and his ship, even though it hadn’t been intentional that their Queen had been killed.
I’m also wondering though if Hook’s history with mermaids could play into his story further back, even to the time before he was a pirate. We dunno yet if mermaids are in multiple worlds, though.
October 5, 2013 at 2:40 am #214049sweetgrassParticipantthe biggest irony would be if Hook is part mermaid from his mom and never knew it. Note I didn’t say Ariel had to be his mom. It could have been a different mermaid, especially if his dad is Davy Jones. I would think they won’t make his mom a sea goddess.
Keeper of Hook and Emma's smoldering first kiss, a certain Pirate's sauciness, the Evil Queen's snarkiness, Grumpy's gruffness and a drop of true love to make it all go down smooth.
October 5, 2013 at 4:38 am #214053kfchimeraParticipantSweetgrass: Well he’d have the sea in his blood for sure that way! Hook does say to young Bae that bit about the sea in your blood. It works as a common sailor expression, a nod to Milah or it could tip off quite directly that Hook has the Sea in his as part a merman. I don’t know as anything could happen when magic is involved.
Phee I like the idea that there’s this horrible tragedy at work. I think it is hinted that’s the case in the Disney Cannon because Ursula implies she had something to do with setting the pirates up to be where they were. At least she implies in the musical version she was involved with Ariel’s mothers death. The pirates were added later when they made the prequel.

October 21, 2013 at 12:01 am #217580SlurpeezParticipantYes! I noticed that uncanny and seemingly deliberate choice to dress Killian in an Eric-esque navy uniform. Coincidence?

October 21, 2013 at 12:08 am #217583PheeParticipantI mean, I guess navy blue and gold trim is sort of a staple for a Navy uniform. But given the context of this show, they totally went and dressed him in a way that brings Eric to mind, which is rather curious. They didn’t have to make Killian a Navy man in that uniform at all, they coulda given him a different back story. So did Killian possibly serve in the Navy that served Eric’s ancestors? Could we maybe be getting a Hook/Eric mashup of sorts after all?

At this stage, that wouldn’t actually surprise me all that much. We’re getting Ariel’s story right on the tail-end of Hook’s backstory (get it, TAIL-end), which again could be a coincidence, but could also be deliberate. Also we’re getting the infamous CS kiss, which is very interesting timing, too, considering Emma just confessed she has never stopped loving Neal. So, if SF eventually work things out (as I hope they will), Killian is going to be in need of a pretty lady to comfort him. While I favor CaptainFairy at the moment, I could totally get on aboard with Hookriel if Eric turns out not to reciprocate Ariel’s feelings. If Emma rejects Hook in favor of Neal and Eric rejects Ariel in favor of someone else, then I could see Hook and Ariel finding their happy ending by sailing off into the sunset together. Hmmmm…. I may become a convert after all, so help me. For me, it’ll all depend on whether Prince Eric and Ariel have true love or not.
