There were carved mermaids in The JR’s Captain’s Cabin, in the room where Liam dies. They form the decoration in the pillars around the support of the room.

I totally noticed that and it made my crack shipper heart skip a beat. 😉 So I guess maybe he didn’t harbour such a strong dislike for mermaids back then, because you wouldn’t think they’d have the Captain’s quarters decorated with multiple mermaids if they hated them, right? Wonder if Killian redecorated that cabin at some point after some incident?

I noticed those mermaids, too! While it could just be a nod to old-fashioned ships often being decorated with mermaids, I naturally thought fondly of you all over in your Hookriel row boat. 🙂
Also, I just thought I’d throw this out there for team Hookriel. In 3×5 when Killian becomes Captain Jones, he says to his crew:
Never again shall anyone set sail to that cursed land. And never again shall we take such orders, serving the king, fighting his wars. That is the way of dishonor and all you who disagree, flee now or walk the bloody plank! For those who stay, we’ll be free men, and i will be your captain! We’ll sail under the crimson flag and we’ll give our enemies no quarter! We’ll take what we please and we’ll live by our own rules, for that is the best form of all!
Well, given the context, to fly under the crimson flag could be sailor-speek for pirate flag. Yet, crimson is also another word for red, and who has red hair on the show? Ariel! So, Hook sails under a crimson flag, and Ariel is being introduced in 3×6 !
ETA: I just did a quick search on Wikipedia, and it turns out that the Jolly Roger (skull and cross bones) flag that signified a ship belonged to pirates was a later invention. Prior to that, pirates sailed under a red (crimson) flag:
The origin of the pirate flag has been lost. Pirates may have originally used a red flag, which was also common in naval warfare, to signal that no quarter would be given. This red flag was called Joli Rouge (pretty red) by the French, and may have been corrupted into English as Jolly Roger. From the red flag it seems that individual pirates began to develop their own personal flags in order to terrify their foes into a quick surrender. In contrast with the well known red flag, they used the black flag of quarantine and disease as the base, with the universal symbol for death, the skull and bones, and modified it to suit their individual tastes. The skull and bones was also used in captains’ logbooks to indicate the death of a sailor.

Incidentally while the Netherlands are not associated as much with rum toting pirates, they did have colonies that were (though stylistically the buildings definitely did not resemble Curacao for example). It just sort of ties in somehow in my mind that Hook ‘s backstory involves attacking Eric’s Kingdom’s colonies/trade routes.
